ECONOMIC ACTION NETWORK – Growing our Economy through InnovationThe Economic Action Network (EAN), inspired and led by CEDEC, RDÉE Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada, is a space for leaders to develop innovative and practical initiatives that will stimulate and grow our economy.

The Canadian Plan for Economic Development of Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC) underlines the work of the Economic Action Network. The key objectives include:

• Support the creation of innovative, growth- oriented companies

• Ensure the availability of skilled, productive workers

ECONOUS2016 – Inspiring InnovationIn May 2016, with the Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet), CEDEC co-hosted ECONOUS2016, the National Community Economic Development Conference. This remarkable event brought together hundreds of Canadian and international leaders in CED.

Charlotte Bell, President and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) addresses the EAN’s first Economic Action Forum in 2016, which tackled important subjects related to tourism, the green economy, skills training, and support for small businesses.

“The only way we can promote inclusive and more sustainable growth is by working with our local communities. Development is always a bottom up process. Taking an integrated approach that cuts across employment, skills, economic development, the social economy, and entrepreneurship is absolutely crucial.”

—Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development

TOURISMLaunched in 2015, Tourism 2025, CEDEC’s plan to create 46,900 jobs and inject $5.2 billion into the economy, is generating important results.

In 2016 alone, we have witnessed record increases in international visits to Canada, and the future of the industry and the impact that this will have on communities throughout Canada is exciting!

The strategy which includes support for businesses, promo-tion of cultural tourism products, and support for recruitment and retention of tourism workers,

is an open invitation to develop new opportu-nities and take part in making Canada a top tier destination.

“Having a personal connection is very important to me. The one-on-one guidance from my mentor has made me ask tough questions about my

business and how it affects my life. As a first-time business owner, this is an essential part of my growth.”

—Oliver Drake, Drake Wood Design, Chelsea (QC)

“I came to Quebec for the government incentives to start my business but I stayed for the talent and the quality of life.”

CEDEC’s Community Revitalization demonstrates how mobilizing citizens can lead to community innovation, economic development and create the conditions for businesses to grow.

To date, Revitalization has mobilized communi-ties across Quebec to create projects worth tens of millions of dollars. Many communities that

were once considered devitalized are experienc-ing positive, citizen-driven change since working with CEDEC. In 2015 alone, almost $1,025,000 was leveraged and invested in local projects.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENTSuccessful businesses require talented and skilled workers.

CEDEC works with partners to address labour market challenges and opportunities and identify the investments in training and skills development that Canada requires to be competitive in a global economy. Connecting Employers to the Right Talent, CEDEC’s workforce strategy, revolves around four key endeavours to help employers find and recruit qualified and skilled workers who are seeking meaningful employment:

• Promote the benefits of bilingual employees

• Support employers with robust analytics and coordination of workforce integration

• Support service providers with a framework for continuum of services

• Generate better labour market information

SYSTEMIC CHANGE AND SEEDING CONFIDENCE Despite progress made over the years, the participation of women in the Canadian workforce still trails that of men. CEDEC is working with partners to create systemic change and opportunity for women, start-ing with English speakers in the Magdalen Islands, who have faced challenges to achieving economic security.

CEDEC “Get Connected” events bring employ-ers, resource providers and job seekers together in a variety of settings to network in a friendly environment and make new connec-tions in the hidden job market. This popular platform is raising awareness of employers’ needs and increasing access to qualified bilin-gual candidates. Employers are invited to partner with CEDEC and “Get Connected” at major employment fairs as well as niche networking events.
