Chair, Int’l Relations Committee

Warren Buffett is the most successful and revered investor of

all time. His ability to consistently find undervalued companies

has made him one of the world’s richest men.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is reported to be holding

a record cash pile of US $ 122 billion at the end of June. Warren

Buffett said he’s just waiting for the right time to get again into

“an elephant-sized acquisition.” He’s not in a hurry.

Speaking of Warren Buffett, the world’s most successful and

legendary investor (he’s always in the list of top five (5) richest

men in the whole world) is also known to be a quote machine

for his simple and yet profound wisdom. As expected, much of

it has something to do with investments, but he is equally

qualified to impart good advice on careers and businesses.

By studying Buffett you can learn what works and what does

not work in most circumstances. In fact, one of the most

important advice that Warren has been dishing out to business

leaders, and he’s been telling this for a while, is that of all the

decisions we should make in life, one of the most important

ones is to invest in relationships with honest and ethical people.

To further drive home his point, he added to surround yourself

with people possessing leadership qualities, generous, honest,

and ready to give credit to other people for their own ideas.

Some of Warren’s published quotable wits and statements are

these:

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to

ruin it”

“You can’t make a good deal with a bad person”

“You need a temperament that neither derives great

pleasure from being with the crowd nor against the crowd”

“If you get to my age in life (he’s 89 last August 30)

and nobody thinks well of you, I don’t care how big your bank

account is, your life is a disaster”

“It really does all boil down to this, doesn’t it? If you

live your life with integrity and in accordance with your most

closely held values (values involving something greater than

yourself), you are far more likely to be happy than not.”

Reflecting on his own research on ethics. Stanford social

psychologist Philip Zimbardo concludes that: Ethical

problems in companies, “don’t come from a few bad apples’

but from the barrel makers, the leaders who, wittingly or not,

create and maintain the systems in which participants are

encouraged to do wrong”. Despite what we would like to

believe, situation is a more powerful influence than character

for most people. Hence, make a commitment to do the small

things right. Doing little things wrong opens the possibilities

of doing big things wrong, therefore be strong even in the little

things.

As Business Author Liz Claman puts it, “the one certainty

I’ve learned over the years about Warren Buffett is that his

honesty, his obdurate opposition to business shenanigans, and

his concern for his shareholders are so palpable.”

Ethics must be a central focus in all the things we do.

Atty. Abelardo “Billy” Cortez is currently IAFEI

secretary and Executive Committee member. He is an

independent board director at First Metro Securities Corp.

and First Metro Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) (Metrobank

Group). He was formerly FINEX President and chairman of

the Philippines Capital Markets Development Council. He’s

San Beda Law Alumni Association Finance Committee

chairman.

A special touch was the surprise presentation of two Tiffany gifts

in its signature blue-wrapped boxes generously donated by

Rustan's chair Nedy Tantoco and presented with the assistance

of EVP Grace Tiongco and Joy Yap Siao, daughter of Eddie Yap,

to Gerphil Flores and conductor Jeffrey Solares. Producer Eddie

Yap said the film is closely associated with Tiffany and the gifts

were in appreciation of their marvelous performance of the

beloved tribute piece, Moon River.

In between these two bookenders, there were romantic themes

by the MSO and songs by Gerphil that brought back a feeling of

nostalgia for years past, such as the love themes from Out of

Africa, Somewhere in Time, Moulin Rouge, Speak Softly Love

from The Godfather, while the audience was transported back to

Included are three pieces rendered by baritone Byeong In Park

from the classical music genre - Bizet's popular Toreador March

from the opera Carmen and Vesti la Giubba from the opera

Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, a challenging mournful aria brilliantly

used as background music to the death scene of Untouchable

detective Malone, played by Sean Connery. Romantic feelings

flared by If Ever I would Leave You from Camelot.

Violinist Princess rendered a sterling rock version of Beethoven's

Chair, Involvement & Fellowship

The very heavy traffic jam in the evening of Tuesday,

August 20, did not deter some FINEX officers and members

from attending the second fellowship event held at Poblacion,

Makati organized by the Membership Committee’s Fellowship

Subcommittee. Those who braved the traffic were rewarded

with good food, fine wine, and melodic music.

The highlight of the evening was a “teaser” musical

performance of Baihana. The vocal trio composed of Krina

Cayabyab, Anna Achacoso-Graham, and Mel Torre treated

members with a repertoire of jazz, OPM, pop and standard

pieces arranged differently in a distinctly Baihana harmony.

The night ended with FINEX members clamoring for more of

Baihana but they would have to wait until November. Baihana

together with other artists will be performing in a jazz concert

being organized by the FINEX Arts Committee. That will be

another FINEX event that should not be missed—-traffic or

no traffic.

La Collina’s Anita Celdran prepared a special menu for

FINEX consisting of popular Italian and Spanish dishes:

arancina, chorizo, fritto misto and fabada for starters; baked

codfish or roast pork for main; and panna cotta for dessert.

Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly complimented the

dishes and put the members in good spirit.

Organized by the ICT Committee in

partnership with BPM Vision Philippines, a

productive and insightful round-table

discussion with the CFOs of top Philippine

companies was recently held at New World

Hotel.

Speakers Gaurav Ahuja, President/CEO of

BPM Vision and Will U’rin of Micro Focus

discuss how Project Portfolio Management

(PPM) delivers enterprise benefits to senior

leadership in the midst of digitization

investments.

A follow-up forum on strategic portfolio

management with end-user presentations and

testimonials is scheduled in October at Grand

Hyatt Hotel.
