It is my great honor to welcome language teachers from across Asia to the 2014 ACAMIS Chinese Conference here at the International School of Tianjin.

The challenges associated with the teaching and the learning of the Chinese language are considerable, and this conference is therefore convened with very real appreciation on the part of each of our schools for your professional labors and pedagogical talents. As proud hosts of this year’s conference it is our pleasure to be able to provide our school as a venue for professional sharing, learning and friendship, and it is our hope that your journey together over the next few days will be engaging and rewarding - and of course fun.

I wish to thank both the ACAMIS Board and the conference organizing committee members for working so diligently to ensure the ongoing success of this very important ACAMIS event, and for dedicating their efforts to ensure that the Chinese language - and the professional development needs of Chinese language teachers – remain at the forefront of our thinking and of our schools.

On behalf of the International School of Tianjin, and of the many ACAMIS schools in attendance, I would like to extend to you all my warmest wishes for a terrific conference.

Founded in 1994, the International School of Tianjin (IST) is a non-profit, parent governed, college-preparatory day school for Nursery to Grade 12 students of the international community in Tianjin. IST opened the doors of a converted downtown Tianjin villa to some 20 children in Grades 1 to 4 on 5 September 1994. In 2001 IST relocated to a new 7.2-hectare campus in Weishan Lu in the city’s southeast, and currently boasts 30,000m2 of architecturally designed and purpose built facilities. Student enrollment has since expanded to approximately 450 students.

IST is fully accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the USA and the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe. The school is an IB World School authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12), the Middle Years Programme (Grades 6-10), and the Primary Years Programme (Grades NPK-5). All Grade 11-12 students pursue the IB Diploma at IST. Students have maintained a 96% pass rate with an average score of 34 points since the first class graduated in 2005.

IST is a member of all of the major regional international school associations, including the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS), Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), and Association of China and Mongolia IB Schools (ACMIBS). IST is proud to have been one of the four founding member schools of ACAMIS and six founding member schools of ACMIBS.

Our common future requires that we all look beyond our immediate needs. For this reason, IST students learn that they have a duty to the wider community and to the environment. IST is a truly international community that embraces the cultural richness of our host country China, and understands the importance of different people in the world learning from one another.

IST is honored to support Chinese teacher professional development on a national level by hosting this year’s ACAMIS 12th Annual Chinese Conference.

    Tuesday July 1, 2014

    10:30 – 12:10: Session 1

    ∞ Thinking = Learning

This session explores the notion of making teaching visible to students and students making their learning visible to the teacher. It is about how we go about knowing and understanding. By making thinking visible, it provides teachers the opportunity to take students’ learning to the next level. In this session, participants will explore what ‘making thinking visible’ means and strategies for use in the language classroom.

    13:10 - 14:50: Session 2

∞ Check for understanding of learning

When we check all students’ levels of understanding throughout each lesson, it sets the tone that everyone’s thinking is important and necessary, and we enhance the learning and engagement of all. Unless you check for understanding, it is difficult to know exactly what students are getting out of the lesson. In this session, participants will explore a variety of strategies to promote student learning and guide instruction. Participants will try a variety of games and activities that can be used with students of all ages, focusing on building vocabulary.

    15:20 – 17:00: Session 3

∞ Classroom routines and practices to maximize instruction time

Learning in the classroom is dependent upon the management skills of the teacher. A well-managed classroom provides an environment in which teaching and learning can flourish. In this session, participants will explore ways that learning environments invite thinking and flexibility so that students have time to make meaning of the content.
