Dear Foundation Friends, Donors and PHCC Members:
As Chairperson of the PHCC Educational Foundation, I get to see all the wheels spinning behind the scenes. I see skilled staff members working to
ensure that your gifts are directed to the best possible programs. I see volunteers judging apprentice contests, developing new curriculum, or selecting scholarship winners. And I see people like you investing your precious dollars in our programs … “paying it forward” to help keep today’s workforce current and competitive, plus prepare the next generation for this great industry.
But then comes the best part of my job — witnessing the impact of all these efforts. It’s realizing that those in our industry look to the Foundation as the source of information on issues, such as preparing for the new lead free law. It’s hearing a young person in our Plumbing Apprentice Contest talk about the
tremendous pride she has in her work. It’s realizing that a leading company like InSinkErator believes so much in what we do at the Foundation that they invested in our annual giving campaign for a 25th straight year!
This affirms that what we’re doing is making a real difference.
As you’ll see from the highlights of this year, the Foundation continued to provide top-notch training through webinars, seminars, contests and other events, as well as textbooks, bulletins, and other valuable tools. And, we’re receiving positive feedback from many of our new initiatives including our Advanced Project Management Course, our first HVAC Apprentice Contest, and conversion of our plumbing textbooks to an e-book format.
As I finish my term, I confidently pass the baton to Roger Peugeot. “Roger the Plumber” has not only built a thriving plumbing business in Overland Park, Kansas, but has been a member of PHCC since 1972 and was on the PHCC Board of Directors when the Foundation was established 26 years ago. And, I look forward to witnessing even more success stories as we continue to advance the p-h-c industry, cultivate collaborative relationships, and prepare the next generation of skilled workers and managers.
The Foundation certainly has earned the reputation of being the resource for industry information, education, and training, but it’s been made possible only because you share in our continuous commitment toward a higher standard. Rest assured, we never lose sight that we must continue to keep our contractors performing in this ever-changing industry with best practices and processes, and now more than ever we must cultivate an emerging workforce that will be motivated and highly skilled.

A Higher Standard2012–2013 Educational Foundation Accomplishments
For more than 25 years, the PHCC Educational Foundation has been setting the bar high. An entire industry considers us its “go-to” leader when it comes to education and training. Those in the trade know that we get young people excited about this profession. Apprentices know that they can count on us to effectively prepare them for jobs to support their families. Contractors know that we’re on top of new technologies and practices. And manufacturers know we train technicians to install their products correctly.
Of course, we know that we need YOU to keep this going. Take a look at what we’ve been doing this year through the Foundation. Together, we continue toward a higher standard.

Plumbing and HVAC Apprentice ContestsFor over 20 years we’ve watched apprentices from across the nation test their knowledge and skills at the Foundation’s popular Plumbing Apprentice Contest held during the PHCC convention. This year we added an HVAC Contest to the line-up in Las Vegas. Extending the impact of these events, the Foundation donates the products used during the competitions to a local apprentice school, high school, or other training program that, in turn, uses the donations to train students.

ScholarshipsAttracting new talent has never been more essential to the future of this trade. With that, the Foundation presented $57,000 in scholarships this year to 23 students entering the p-h-c industry. Since 1986, more than $2.1 million in scholarships have been awarded or funded through the Foundation.

SkillsUSA ContestsThe Foundation again supported the plumbing and HVACR contests at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills competition, held in June in Kansas City. Over 100 students participated in these two contests, joining more than 5,700 other secondary and postsecondary career and technical education students in a total of 94 trades contests. Foundation volunteers assisted with set-up and contest judging.
“The SkillsUSA contest provides a great way to test what students have learned at various school levels and to expose them to a real-world setting so they can demonstrate how well they can do. It also lets them compete against their peers and show off their skills. Plumbing e-BooksTogether with Cengage Learning, the Foundation launched digital versions of its four-year series of plumbing textbooks, available in Kindle, Nook, and Apple formats, as a way to reach a more tech-savvy audience of students.

2013 HVACR and Mechanical Conference for Educational Professionals
With installation and service for HVAC, water heating, and commercial refrigeration equipment the second fastest growing mechanical trade in the nation, the Foundation was honored to again help sponsor this year’s conference, held in March in Colorado Springs. More than 100 instructors participated in the event, which provides them with cutting-edge technical information and new teaching techniques.
Regional Instructor WorkshopsThe Foundation hosted two regional instructor workshops — held in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and San Antonio, Texas — focused on optimizing the use of technology in the classroom and other emerging topics that help give instructors the training they need to become more skilled and confident in the classroom setting. The workshops were sponsored in part by BrassCraft, Copper Development Association, and Kohler.

Plumbing and HVACR Home Study ProgramNearly 80 students who are unable to participate in a traditional classroom-based apprentice training program enrolled in the Home Study Program this year. Additionally, the Foundation and Indiana PHCC piloted a program that combines classroom and online training using the Foundation’s e-learning system.
Plumbing Assessment TestsRecognizing that — in this age of educational accountability — assessment testing is critical to evaluating performance, the Foundation’s plumbing assessment tests continued to measure the knowledge students should have at the end of each year of an apprenticeship program. Not only can results help instructors identify areas of student weakness so that instruction can be enhanced, but the fourth-year tests also can be used as an entry-level journeyman test, allowing employers to assess the knowledge of prospective employees.

Virtual UniversityThrough a partnership with 360 Training, the Foundation offered more than 60 online training courses for contractors and their employees. PHCC members receive a 10-percent discount on the courses, which focus on HVACR, safety, and sustainable construction topics. OSHA’s 10- and 30-hour courses are among the most popular offerings.
Media Exposure Surrounding a New Workforce
With the sobering statistics surrounding the widening gap between construction labor demand and supply, the Foundation works to not only train a future generation of skilled workers but to help recruit and retain this new workforce as well. With that, the Foundation teamed with Tom Applegate, a lifelong educator and member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, to offer advice on how to motivate this new “Generation Y.” Our findings gained prominent exposure this year in Contractor magazine, as well as in numerous chapter publications.
Business Management Training
Get the Lead Out Plumbing ConsortiumWith the January 4, 2014, effective date of the new federal “Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act” fast approaching, the
Foundation took the lead in organizing a Get the Lead Out Plumbing Consortium to offer widespread education about the manufacture, distribution, and installation of Lead Free plumbing products. Recognized as a key source of information, we partnered with leading trade associations and manufacturers to develop a website — www.GetTheLeadOutPlumbing.com — that serves as a single, comprehensive resource on everything related the new law. To date, the Consortium has trained more than 2,500 distributors, engineers, contractors, and code officials on the new requirements at more than 40 industry events.
Essentials of Project Management CourseThis year’s course was a sell-out, with 26 participants picking up dozens of new ideas on topics such as site management, cash flow and finances, marketing, and workforce management. This year, all handouts and meeting materials were distributed digitally. Since 1996, more than 640 contractors and their employees from 200 companies have benefited from this training program.

Advanced Project Management CourseNew this year, the Foundation presented an Advanced Project Management Course with topics selected by the attendees via an online survey. During the workshop — sponsored by Viega and hosted at its educational facility in Nashua, New Hampshire — 27 project managers from some of the nation’s largest and most successful plumbing and mechanical contracting companies discussed Building Information Modeling (BIM), Big Data, 3-D scanning, and how to use technology to recruit younger workers to the industry.
Seminar and Webinar SeriesKohler Company’s sponsorship of our seminar and webinar programs allows the Foundation to bring quality business management training to contractors and their employees. This year, the Foundation supported 65 programs reaching more than 4,000 industry professionals.
CONNECT 2013 Educational ProgramsThe Foundation was proud to again be a gold-level sponsor for CONNECT 2013. Particularly fitting for the conference theme of “Go Big + Innovate,” the Foundation created a series of Big Idea Sessions, to help attendees re-ignite their businesses. Topics included online marketing, customer service, business diversification, new DOE water heater regulations, a changing workforce, environmental issues, and opportunities in water and energy conservation.
Focus Newsletter & Focus Flash E-mail Newsletter To supplement our communications between printed issues of the Focus newsletter, the Foundation reaches out monthly with our timely Focus Flash e-mail newsletter, sponsored again this year by A. O. Smith. Highlighting upcoming educational events and offerings, Focus Flash also links to the latest installment of the HR Personnel e.bulletin, which this year explored subjects such as social media in the workplace, attracting and retaining a Generation Y workforce, and orienting new employees.

FundraisingECIC ENDOWMENT FUND
Endowment FundThe Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with the majority of our monetary support provided by more than 75 contractors, manufacturers, and industry partners whose generous gifts helped to establish the Foundation’s Endowment Fund. These major donors form the core membership of our committees and together serve as our Board of Governors. Under the careful stewardship of the Investment Management Committee, the endowment is invested in ways which ensure funds are available to support industry education for future generations.
Invest in Your Future CampaignThe Foundation heavily depends on the annual giving campaign to fund the development and delivery of our educational programs. We’re proud to announce that — for the 13th consecutive year — we reached our annual goal. InSinkErator, Ferguson and NIBCO were major supporters for the 2013 campaign.
In fact, 2013 marks the 25th year that InSinkErator has supported the Foundation. The company became a major sponsor of the Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign in 1989, and it has made gifts of $25,000 or more every year since, totaling more than $625,000 in support to the Foundation over the past 25 years.

On the Horizon …For over 25 years, the Foundation has anticipated the needs of the industry’s work-force and responded with innovative education and targeted training programs. Of course, the needs of our industry — and the workforce serving it — never stop changing, and neither do we! To ensure that we continue our reputation for delivering a higher standard, we’re already working on plans for 2014, which includes the following digital tools:
Mobile Version of the Foundation Website. To offer access to industry education and training resources on a smartphone, tablet or other mobile device.
Electronic Scholarship Applications. Beginning in 2014, those interested in Foundation scholarships will be able to submit all application materials online.
HVACR e-Books. This year, the Foundation announced electronic versions of its plumbing textbooks, available in Kindle, Nook, and Apple formats. In 2014, our four-year HVACR series will go digital.
