Response to Intervention (RtI)Whether as a new way to manage the education of struggling students, or simply as a component of good teaching, Cambium Learning Technologies encourages the educators we work with to monitor student success with our intervention products and to adapt instruction accordingly. An important component of this effort is an ability to efficiently track student results. Federal Research and Evaluation Grant for Classroom Suite by IntelliTools®

We are excited to be completing the classroom study phase of our multi-year math grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development under a Small Business Innovations Research Grant*. This funding has enabled us to work with expert math consultants and with researchers from the University of Oregon: Scott Baker, PhD, and Ben Clarke, PhD. We believe that the resulting product is both innovative and unique, and look forward to sharing the results of this extensive, scientific study.

Recently Released Longitudinal Study of Kurzweil 3000™In April 2008, the Iowa Department of Education released the Iowa Text Reader Longitudinal Study that documented results showing that students accessed information twice as fast and performed significantly better on passage comprehension measures when using Kurzweil 3000.

Classroom Suite

1. Early LearningEngaging early learning activities for emergent learners

These popular templates teach basic skills and have been updated to make them easier than ever to customize.

Teachers can create simple question and answer activities with their own curriculum content.

The Errorless Writing template allows teachers to create errorless writing activities with customized content based upon their curriculum or students’ interest.

The Easy Explore template allows students to explore attributes of size (small, medium, large), number (1-20), color (12 different colors), and movements.

The Left Right template enables teachers to create activities that teach students how to use two switches to interact with an activity. This is a precursor to understanding the concept of two switch step scanning, where each switch has a different function.

The Puzzles template provides the framework to quickly create puzzles with your own content. Teachers can create a puzzle using a graphic from the Classroom Suite 4 library, import a downloaded graphic from the Web, or import their own photos.

IntelliKeys and IntelliSwitchThe IntelliKeys keyboard is the most commonly used alternative input device for students with disabilities (see page 14). IntelliSwitch is the wireless switch interface that operates instantly without configuration (see page 18). Classroom Suite is specially designed to create ease for the Speech Therapist, Special Educator, or Assistive Technology Specialist.

The Match Sounds template allows you to create activities in which a student matches words based on their beginning, middle, ending sound, or rime. The words offered in this template are single syllable words with an initial, medial, and ending sound.

The Build Words Using Sounds template allows you to construct activities where students build words as they practice letter-sound correspondence. Students look at the picture, listen to the word, and use letter cards to build words. Choose words with three to six phonemes, with or without distracter letters.

The Build Vocabulary template allows you to create activities to help build students’ vocabulary. Create entries for key vocabulary words that include a definition, synonym, representative graphic, and sample sentence.

The Build Comprehension template allows you to create activities to help build student comprehension. Add a paragraph or passage. Enter comprehension questions about the passage. When students use the activity, they have an opportunity to preview the questions before reading the passage. This approach teaches students to think about what they are reading as they read.

The Build Fluency template allows you to create activities in which a student reads and records passages. You can create a fluency activity using your own text. Passages can be a single word, phrase, or sentence.

2. Reading Classroom Suite is anchored in the research by the National Reading Panel, the Florida Center for Reading Research, and research conducted with Karen Erickson, PhD, of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies. Classroom Suite is an ideal tool for creating reading interventions based on DIBELS® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) screening data.

Model, Practice, Apply

Classroom Suite performs like an excellent instructor. Great teachers give direction (Model), support guided practices with their class (Practice), and then turn the reins over to their students (Apply). With Classroom Suite, students are led through three stages:

Show Me—The computer plays a video-like sequence to orient the student to the lesson.

Practice—The student practices and learns as the software provides strategic and corrective feedback.

Challenge—The educational objective is identical to “Practice,” but the corrective feedback is withdrawn and data is collected for reports.

If the student displays mastery in Challenge, he/she moves on to the next activity. If the student fails to master the assignment, he/she receives more practice with more strategic feedback.

Classroom Suite

The Letters template allows you to build confidence and communication skills. The Letter activities include social letters, thank you letters, and business letters.

The Autobiographies template allows you to write autobiographies in response to a series of structured prompts. These activities give students experience with the various elements that go into developing a well-thought-out, autobiographical narrative.

The Journals template allows you to develop sophisticated writing skills that include language comprehension, sentence structure, and writing independence. Three levels of Journals provide scaffolded support for developing writing skills and writing confidence.

The Reports template allows you to create a variety of reports that can be printed, handed in, and shown as a presentation for the class.

3. Writing

The scaffolded writing instruction integrated into Classroom Suite helps students to master the stages of the writing process (brainstorming, organizing, drafting, editing, publishing) and provides opportunities to learn to write in various genres. In the activities, students are asked to write to express, discover, record, develop, reflect on ideas, and problem solve. Students categorize ideas and organize them into paragraphs, then blend paragraphs within larger units of text.

The Patterns template allows you to create activities in which students build an understanding of patterns. The activities that can be created from this template include copying a pattern or finishing a pattern. The template uses these manipulatives: toys, shapes, and fruit.

The Multiplication Under 150 template allows you to create activities in which students learn fundamental multiplication concepts and solves basic multiplication problems. Students learn these concepts by using three manipulatives: arrays, ten frames, and number lines.

The Addition and Subtraction with Base Ten Blocks template allows you to create activities in which students use Base Ten blocks to understand conceptually the procedure of regrouping to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems.

The Equivalent Fractions template allows you to create activities in which the student learns about equivalent fractions and the concept of simplest terms. Manipulatives include fraction bars and parts of a set.

The mathematics interactions in Classroom Suite are based upon research in mathematical models and automaticity. AbleNet Switches

AbleNet’s traditional switches and wireless Jelly Beamer are made of durable, high-impact plastic. They are responsive across the entire surface, and include flange base and provision for audible feedback. Traditional switches include a six-foot cord, and the Big Red includes a storage compartment in the base. Tracker® Pro from MadentecThe Tracker Pro is a computer input device that takes the place of a mouse for people with little or no hand movement. It plugs into a computer’s USB port and can be mounted on to a monitor, laptop lid, or augmentative communication device using the mounting adaptations that are included.

A tiny reflective dot is then placed on the student’s forehead or glasses. When the student sits at the computer facing the Tracker Pro, it shines out a beam of invisible infrared light, detects the reflection of the light off the dots when the student makes a head movement, and translates it into mouse movement.
