THE NEWPOCKET HOLE JIG

Jigs and jig making have always been animportant and integral element inrouting, allowing many traditionalwoodworking techniques to be carriedout proficiently while introducing manynew techniques and applications. Trendnot only develop new jigs, but makeavailable the materials, components andinformation to enable the woodworkerto design and make their own.As you will find in this latest edition ofINProfile,Trend have introduced severalnew jigs into their range. However, youwill also find that they have looked tothe entry-level end of the market, inorder to help encourage new crafts-people of all skills, to the concept ofrouting by introducing several lowerpriced, yet technicallyadvanced products.

glazed and panelled frameddoors and internal hollow coredoors. The Lock Jig will providesubstantial time savings when anumber of similar doors requirelocks fitting. The jig has beendesigned for use in conjunctionwith the Trend Hinge Jig toprovide the complete doorhanging solution.

Router Specification The Lock Jig can be used with anyrouter fitted with a 30mm guide bushand a 12mm diameter long reachcutter. Ideally a 12.7mm (1/2 inch)collet router should be used to takeadvantage of the extra length availableby using a 1/2 inch shank diametercutter Trend TR37x1/2 TC. This willproduce a mortise depth of up to75mm, suitable for most shallowbodied locks and latches. For deeper mortises and when usinga smaller collet capacity (1/4 inch or

8mm shank cutters), the depth can beincreased using an auger or flat bit.

Two sets of steel templates areprovided with the jig, a lettered set(A to D) for the lock body mortiseand a numbered set (1 to 12) for thelock faceplate. When routing thetemplate is securely held to the faceof the jig by two strong magnets.A chart is supplied with the jig forcorrect selection of templates for allpopular locks.LOCK/JIG _______________£69.00

A range of templates to suit most popular makesof locks and latches are supplied with the Lock Jig.

Setting-out and chiselling amortise squarely into thethickness of a door stile is not

the easiest operation to undertake. The slightest inaccuracy may wellresult in an ill-fitting lock and a doorthat is difficult to close. However, using the precision of the router anda simple jig, the result will be aperfect fit every time. The Trend Lock Jig is designed toalleviate much of the repetitivenessinvolved in setting-up and ensuresthat each lock mortise and its faceplate recess are cut square andcentral across the door edge. Using aseries of interchangeable templates,

the Lock Jig can be usedfor fitting all popularmakes of mortise

Mortise and tenon joints areused in many forms oftimber construction, such as

frames for panelled doors, carcassesfor furniture and cabinets, legs andrails for tables and chairs.Traditionally mortises and tenons haveeither been cut by hand or by usingdifferent machines for each operation. One method of simplifying the wholeprocedure is to use the router inconjunction with the Trend Mortise

and Tenon Jig. By setting up the jig tocut the tenon, it is automatically setto cut the mortise, ensuring thataccuracy is maintained throughout. No repetitive marking-out is needed, only a quick cutter and guide bushchange to switch between the twoapplications.Simply mounted on the edge of aworkbench, the timber is clampedbeneath the top plate of the jigvertically for tenons and horizontally

A centre line is drawn across the endof the timber before it is clampedlightly in the jig. Both ends of thetenon and the tenon length are marked(i.e. cutting depth). These dimensionsmay not be equal when cutting angledor compound tenons.Lay the setting bar flat on the templateend plates and set the timber againstthe edge of the downstand to set theheight. Then use the setting bar tocentre the timber across the templateopening.Select the required tenon width lineson the set-up bar and align them withthe tenon end marks. Slide the endplates up to the template line (markedL and R) and lock the plates inposition. When cutting tenons, use a 5/8 inchdiameter cutter and select theappropriate guide bush from the charton the set-up bar.

Position the router on the top plateand set the depth of cut (i.e. tenonlength) on the router’s depth stop.Feed the router smoothly in aclockwise direction, keeping the guidebush against the template edges.Plunge cut the tenon in a series ofshallow passes.

Square end tenons can be cut bysimply reversing the end plates. Themortise ends will then need to besquared with a chisel. To cut angled tenons, set the verticalguide to the required angle (see mainpicture), butt the timber against it andclamp the timber. To cut compoundangle tenons, set both the verticalguide and the tilting back plate to therequired angles.

Cutting the Tenon

Leave the end plates as set for cuttingthe tenons. Align and clamp the timberhorizontally and tight to the undersideof the top plate. Set the cutting depthslightly deeper than the tenon lengthand cut the mortise in a series ofshallow passes.

When cutting mortises fit the 2-1/8 inch collar fitted to the 1 inchguide bush, then select and fit theappropriate cutter from the chart onthe set-up bar.

When using thin timber sections orwhen clamping one end only, clamp asupport batten beneath the mortisetimber. Other clamp positions areavailable in the back plate to ensurethat all timber lengths can be heldsecurely. IP

The Mortise and Tenon Jig can also be used for drillingdowel holes using the guide bush positions in the templateend plates. To position the cutter (diameter equal todowel diameter), draw the centre lines and dowel centreson the two pieces of timber to be joined. Align them withthe notches on the template guide holes. Fit the 5/8 inchguide bush and the cutter to the router and set thecutting depth to slightly more than half the dowel length.Drill the holes in a series of plunge cuts to prevent thewaste from packing around the cutter. Fit the secondpiece of timber and drill the dowel holes as before.

pre-drawn design can beaccomplished more easily by using acopying attachment such as the TrendRoutasketch. The Routasketch simply links a stylusor follower pin directly above therouter and centred on the cutteraxis. With a drawing or templatemounted on a table above the router, the user can work with a clearunrestricted view, smoothly andprecisely controlling the path of bothstylus and cutter.

Although generally consideredvery much a utilitywoodworking tool, the

router can also be used to producehighly decorative effects, not onlywhen working in wood, but softmetals, plastics and even slate. Onesuch application is the surfaceengraving of drawings, inscriptionsand lettering, ranging from simplename plaques to complex sign-writingand relief carving. Although freehandrouting is not a difficult skill toacquire, repeating or copying a

www.trendmachinery.co.uk/routasketch

Cutter and pin alignmentIn order to follow the outline precisely,it is essential that the stylus be alignedwith the cutter axis. This is achievedby using the centring bush andalignment pins supplied with the jig.

Positioning the drawingor templateThe drawing, pattern or a threedimensional template is clipped orotherwise secured to the copy holderor drawing plate mounted above theworkpiece. A double-ended stylus isfitted to the support arm - the pointedend for following two dimensionaldesigns and the parallel pin for three-dimensional templates. The drawingplate base is securely clamped to thework surface.

Adjusting the tableheight Initially the table height is adjusted tosuit the height of the router, leaving a50mm space between the top housingvents and the underside of the table. The stylus support arm should be setabout 30mm above the drawing plateto maintain an unrestricted view overthe drawing/pattern. When following atemplate, the arm should be adjustedto allow the parallel pin to touch thetemplate edges.

Using the RoutasketchSelect and fit the appropriate cutter inthe router collet and adjust the cuttingdepth using the router’s depth stop.Do not attempt to cut too deeply intothe surface of the work, but rememberthat it will be difficult to follow the lineprecisely a second time to try todeepen the cut.

Clip the drawing or template tothe table plate using drawingboard clips or low tack tape.Always lay the acetate sheetover drawings to ensure thatthe stylus slides easily.

Adjust the table height to leaveclearance above the routerscooling vents. Fit the O ring tothe stylus and slide it into thecopy arm.

Set the cutter depth to givethe required line strength.

Do restrict the cutting depthwhen using small diametercutters to reduce the risk ofbreakage.Position the stylus on thedrawing or pattern and switchon. Allow the router to reach fullspeed before lowering the cutterinto the work face. To preventleaving burn marks on the surfaceof the wood, be ready to startmoving the stylus along theoutline as soon as the cutter is atthe full cutting depth. Follow theoutline smoothly starting at therear of the drawing plate andworking forwards. Whether youlock the plunge at the final depthor whether you rely on holding itdown depends on yourpreference, but do ensure thatthe depth is constant. If thedesign requires several differentcutting depths, reset or use therouter’s turret stop to set thefinal depth on each pass.Attractive effects can also beachieved by varying the cuttingdepth along the length of a lineby smoothly controlling the riseand fall of the plunge action asyou move the router along.Check carefully that all lines, letters and details of a designhave been cut completely, beforemoving the workpiece or drawingplate. When using the parallel pin tofollow the edge of a template, ensure that the pin remains incontact with the template edgethroughout the cuttingprocess. IP

After checking that thedrawing and cuttingsurface are correctlyaligned, position thestylus at a convenientpoint on the drawing.

Start cutting bysmoothly plunging therouter to the cuttingdepth and following theline with the stylus.

Signs, nameboards andlogos can be reproduced, following a photocopy orcomputer print out. Forthese applications, usethe parallel pin.

The parallel pin can alsobe used to follow twodimensional templates.Allow the pin to runlightly against thetemplate edge to avoidany misalignment whenchanging direction.

The complete alphabet is made up of four lettertemplates, with two templates to cover the numerals 1to 10. All are in Trend’s uppercase ‘Vogue’ typeface, each letter having a nominal height of 57mm. Used witha 13mm guide bush and 8mm cutter (suppliedseparately), they are suitable for both commercial anddomestic applications such as carving name boards anddirectional signs. Variations in the letter style can beachieved by using alternative straight, cove or v-cutters,all guided by the same 13mm guide bush.In use it is recommended that the script is traced fromthe template onto the workpiece first to ensure that the

Guide bush collars are used to cut and perfectly match an inlay and thepocket or recess to receive it. This is achieved using a single straightcutter, a guide bush and a guide bush collar. The inlay is cut using justthe cutter and guide bush. A collar is then fitted over the guide bush toincrease its diameter for cutting the recess. It is not only decorativeveneers and timber panels that can be inlayed in this way. Laminatefinishes, plastics, and even soft metals can be cut in this way, to effectrepairs to damaged surfaces, to cover fastenings and fittings or again tocreate further decorative effects.

Careful matching of grainand colour will disguise

knots and blemishes in thetimber surface.

Balance is all-important when routing on the edge of a workpiece or along narrowwidths, as any tilting of the router will result in uneven or varying depth edgeprofiles. Often this can be rectified by making a second pass, but can result in

having to rout a deeper or wider profile if the material dimensions or the applicationpermits. To eliminate this risk, it is common practice to fit an offset sub-base to providea larger base area on the workpiece and therefore better balance and control. The baseis ideal for all edge routing applications as well as acting as a support plate whenspanning jointed frame or carcass members. The Trend Offset Base is made from clearPETG plastic for both strength and visibility and can be fitted to any TBC router base, orcan be drilled to suit other routers.OFS/BASE ______________£19.95

Adjusting the position of a straight edge or guide to widen a cut is not only timeconsuming but can easily lead to misalignment. One simple method of avoiding thisis to use an Offset Trenching Base, a six sided sub-base fitted to the base of the

router. Each edge produces an increase in width of 1mm, starting from a datum point of100mm from the centre of the cutter/router base to the edge of the template. Drilled tothe Trend base configuration, the base is supplied with two mounting screws and a centringcone for aligning the cutter aperture concentric to the cutter axis. The trenching base is used in conjunction with a straight edge such as a T-square or self-clamping Clamp Guide. The trench or housing is first ‘set off ’ parallel from the straight edgeby a dimension equal to the distance between the tip of the cutter to the datum edge of thetrenching base i.e. 100mm minus half the cutter diameter (e.g: using a 20mm cutter, 100mm- 10mm = 90mm from the straight edge to datum edge of the trenching base). To furtherincrease the width of the initial 20mm wide trench by up to 5mm, simply turn the router sothat the 101, 102, 103, 104 or 105mm edge is in contact with the straight guide.TEMP/OTB/A____________£19.95

Easy to set out and just as easyto cut, flat dowel or biscuitjointing offers a robust and

efficient means of producing strong, accurate joints in solid timber ortimber based boards. Particularlyuseful in the construction of unitfurniture and carcassing, biscuitjointing simply uses flat dowels ofcompressed timber. Set into semi-circular pockets to reinforce edge toedge, corner, tee or mitred butt joints. The Trend T20 biscuit jointer is aprecision power tool designed toposition biscuit dowels with greataccuracy, to ensure that all finishedsurfaces and joined components are

flush or correctly aligned. Driven by apowerful 710 watt motor, the T20 isfitted with a high quality 100mmdiameter x 4mm thick, 6 toothTungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) blade. This blade produces a dowel pocketof exactly the same width (4mm) andcircumference radius as the biscuitdowel. When in contact with a waterbased glue PVA etc, biscuit dowelsswell to further tighten andstrengthen the finished joint. The right angle fence is alsoused to set the biscuit pocketsthe correct distance in fromthe edge of the workpiece toform right-angled corner joints. The same fence setting is thenused to cut the pockets in theedge of the mating panel.

Double-sided diamondwhetstones are one of themost efficient methods of

honing any cutting edge to a precisekeen angle. Using an "electroless"process, monocrystalline diamondsare bonded onto a nickel platedcarbon steel backing plate. Thisproduces a flat stone that canachieve a far greater degree ofefficiency compared to conventionalhoning methods. Available in threesizes, each stone has a coarse surfaceon one face and fine on the reverse.Coarse grade stones are generallyused for initial honing of chisels andplane irons or removing light surfacedamage from spindle mouldingtooling or router cutters.

Fine stones are used to refine theedges of chisels, plane irons and othercutting edge tools, as well as forhoning tungsten carbide tipped (TCT),solid carbide (SC) and high speed steel(HSS & HSSE) router cutters.Diamond sharpening stones willproduce lasting performance withnormal use and need only to belubricated with water. When sharpening router cutters, onlyhone them on the flat front face ofthe cutting edge, never on thebevelled face. Remove guide bearingsfrom self-guiding cutters and repeatthe same number of strokes on eachface (i.e. two flute cutters = two flatfaces). When honing chisels and planeirons and other steel cutting tools, always use a honing gauge to ensurethat the same bevel angle is repeatedand maintained.Always take care of diamond stonesby drying them thoroughly beforeputting away. Ensure that storageboxes, cases or holders are also driedthoroughly. Regularly clean thesurface of the stone with warm soapywater, a plastic scouring pad or thecleaning block provided.
