Happy Fall Ya’all!!! What are you thankful for? I feel so blessed to have so many
of you already back here with me in Paradise, and know there are many more of you on your way! I pray you all
had a super summer and didn’t have heat anything like we did … mercy am I glad to have a little bit cooler weath-
er in the air, and my hair is happy about it too!
If you receive an email that has a red From with a residents name and address … please do not depress the reply
button, that sends your reply back to me instead of them. You can depress the forward button, then copy and paste
their email address into the “To” box and that will allow you to reply directly to them. Thank you!
Please, if you get something out ~ put it away. If you turn something on ~ shut it off. If you see something broken
~ please let the administration office know. Thank you!
The Christmas Trees will be going up in Founder’s Hall and ready for decorating on November 21st. Deadline for
decorating a tree will be Friday December 2nd, in time for the Chorale Christmas Concert.
I had a resident suggest I try to get a bus trip together to go see “Wicked” at the Straz Center. It excites me to be
able to plan activities that you desire to do. If you know of anything else you’d like me to look into ~ please don’t
hesitate. I had 5 people respond that they’d like to do a Victory Casino Cruise and those were the only responses
received regarding doing something new this season.
Keep on eye on your calendar ~ there are lots of things coming up to do.
Have a Thanksgiving full of blessings, friendship and love!

HIGHLANDS RIDGE RECYCLING
Question regarding curbside recycling:
Can I trade that 95 gallon trash can for a smaller
one?
Answer: Each resident will receive one 95
gallon cart for garbage and one 65 gallon cart for
recyclable paper, plastic, cardboard, aluminum
& metal cans.
A hang tag will soon be placed on every home in
all of Highlands County with instructions about
what goes in the cart or how to exchange it for a
smaller cart. Carts have a 10 year warranty.
You can swap for a smaller cart, but it’s a one
time swap. If you choose to go back to a bigger
container there will be a charge.
Publix grocery store takes plastic shopping bags
and Styrofoam cartons. Winn Dixie and
WalMart also have containers for plastic shop-
ping bags.
According to a September 14th Highlands Today
article, a recyclables transfer station will be
built, new trucks will be purchased and 72,000
trash carts will be purchased.
At this point, the yard debris method and con-
tainers for Highlands Ridge will remain the
same. Please only put yard waste and debris in
the containers.
PLEASE … if it isn’t paper, cardboard, aluminum/steel
cans or recyclable plastic do NOT take it to the recycling
bin area. We have had silk fake trees/plants, which if
put out on Thursday with your regular garbage would
have been picked up. There has been plastic that does
NOT have a recycling logo
which means it is not recycla-
ble, which again - if put at the
end of your driveway on
Thursday(s) would have been
picked up. Thank you for your
attention in this matter.
The next road cleanup will be:
December 16 ~ 8:30 a.m.
Call us and put your name on the crew list
so we can get the correct number of vests and
garbage pickers! Lunch will be served at 11:30
a.m. in Founder’s Hall compliments of the
Residents Council. The Highlands County
Recycling Department provides all the
equipment and garbage bags. All we need is
You! You can walk or use your golf car t.
Gardening gloves are recommended.
PLEASE COME HELP! We cover all of Powerline Road, from Arbuckle
Creek Road to Highway 17, Whitehouse Road
and Altvater Road from Highway 17 to our
North Course Entrance Gate.

According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, the safest way to
dispose of pet waste is to bag it and
throw it in the trash. Dog waste is
not fertilizer, as it contains harmful
bacteria, including E.coli. These
bacteria pose health risks to you,

By: Denise Beauparlant, Resident
This month I am going to share some information about the Florida
Armadillo, an animal that is quite misunderstood. The nine-banded armadillo named for the
nine breaks in the leathery armor that allows it to flex its stiff hide, is an odd-looking mammal about the size of a
cat. A mature armadillo is 15 to 17 inches long (not counting the tail) with a weight of 8 to 17 pounds.
Nine-banded armadillos reach sexual maturity at the age of one year, and reproduce every year for the rest of
their 12–15 year lifespans. A single female can produce up to 56 young over the course of her life. This high
reproductive rate is a major cause of the species’ rapid expansion. A single egg is fertilized, but implantation is
delayed for three to four months to ensure the young will not be born during an unfavorable time. Once the
zygote does implant in the uterus, a gestation period of four months occurs, during which the zygote splits into
four identical embryos, each of which develops its own placenta, so blood and nutrients are not mixed between
them. After birth, the quadruplets remain in the burrow, living off the mother’s milk for approximately three
months. They then begin to forage with the mother, eventually leaving after six months to a year.
Armadillos prolific rooting and burrowing can damage lawns and flower-beds. To reduce armadillo damage to
your lawn, keep watering and fertilization to a minimum. Moist soil and lush vegetation bring earth worms
and insect larvae to the surface of the soil. Armadillos can sometimes be enticed to move on by watering areas
adjacent to the damage site. Also, watering gardens in the morning is preferable since the soil can dry out in
the afternoon and not be as easily detected by nocturnal armadillos.
It is lawful for a landowner to live-trap or humanely destroy nuisance armadillos, although they are difficult to
capture with live traps. All live-captured nuisance armadillos must be euthanized, released on-site, or released
on a property within the same county of capture, that is 40 acres or larger with written permission from the
landowner. However, relocating wildlife is seldom biologically sound and the animal often does not survive.
Additional advise and guidance can be obtained from the Florida Dept. of Fish and Wildlife at 863-648-3200.
Chaplain’s Chat By: Rev. Bill Commons, Resident
RELIGION OR RELATIONSHIP?
Religion is man trying to find God.
The Gospel is God reaching out to find man, offering forgiveness and a transforming personal
RELATIONSHIP with Him. And it is free!
“And this is eternal life, that they KNOW YOU the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have
sent” (John 17:3, from the prayer of Jesus just before His betrayal, trial, crucifixion and resurrection.) Jesus came to bridge the gap between rebel man and his Creator so that we may KNOW GOD. That is why He
died on the Cross, so that we might be forgiven and enjoy a life-transforming relationship with God in Christ.
Do you KNOW GOD personally? (Different from knowing ABOUT God). Jesus came to earth from His eter-
nal home in heaven, to find you personally and individually. The crucified and risen Christ loves you and is
searching for you. Will you let Him find you?
When you are in a transforming personal relationship with Jesus, you enjoy inner harmony and harmonious re-
lationships with others. Wanderers from God experience alienation and live empty lives, lost in cosmic loneli-
ness, searching for meaning.
DON’T SETTLE FOR RELIGION WHEN YOU CAN ENJOY RELATIONSHIP!

November, the month that helps us to remember to be thankful. And we've much
to be thankful for.
We have a wonderful library and many diligent workers that keep it going. When you see
them say thank you to Fran Hooker, Helen Suman, Grace Limoncelli, Claire Lensis, Sue
Hall, Angie Weaver, Eileen Deskins, Judy Morris, Sue Jennings and Donna Patrie.
We've also got a variety of good reading. First up is Tom Clancy's “Commander in Chief” by Mark Greaney.
Clancy passed in 2013 and Greaney is carrying on the tradition. President Jack Ryan is forced to deal with
Russian aggression and thwart a possible attempt to conquer the world.
“The Hurricane Sisters” by Dorothea Benton Frank takes place in the South Carolina low country where
hurricane season runs from June until November. (Sound familiar?) It features three generations who are
forced to face the truth about themselves and decide how to deal with it.
“Tall Tail” by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown (large print). With her pet detectives, Harry Haristeen
solves the mystery surrounding the governor's death and secrets from the eighteenth century.
Stuart Woods' “Dishonorable Intentions” (large print) is a Stone Barrington novel and tends to deal more with
the depravity's of the rich than solving a mystery although you can find one if you really hunt.
Last but not least we have a trip through memory lane with Carol Burnett's “In Such Good Company”. (large
print) Non Fiction. “Eleven years of laughter, mayhem, and fun in the sandbox.”
The Highlands Ridge Book Discussion Group will meet at 1:30 PM on November 17. Book to be discussed is
“A Place in his Heart,” by Rebecca DeMarino.

Chorale News By: Sue Shellhammer, Co-Director
Greetings to everyone, from the Highlands Ridge Chorale! Let’s say holiday greetings, as we
began rehearsing our Christmas songs in early October! You have a special invitation to join us for our
“CHRISTMAS FANTASY” concerts on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3rd at 7:00 P.M. in Founder’s Hall, and
on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th at 4:00 P.M. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ on Hammock Rd. Chorale
is sporting a new Christmas “look,” so come and check us out. There are no tickets necessary, but a donation
at the doors is much appreciated. Please mark your calendars and come early for a good seat!
Some highlights of our program will be a whimsical vocal duet and a carol medley featuring trumpeter Rick
Collins. Our music will be enhanced by percussionist, Dick Maley, and bass guitarist, Manny Patino. There
will be chorale soloists, an inspiring finale, and the Hope Street Ringers Handbell Choir from Emmanuel
United Church of Christ will be joining us as well.
Every year, we welcome new members and must say goodbye to others. We wish Rob and Robyn Mitchell
the very best as they begin a new chapter in their lives. We will miss you, Robyn, and want to thank you for
being such a dedicated, and enthusiastic alto! God speed! Soprano, Kathy Fenoff, is taking a sabbatical this
year. Kathy, we hope that you will be back with us next season. A familiar face is returning to chorale. Pat
Dobereiner has joined the alto section. She brings with her many memories from past chorale concerts.
Pat, it’s great to have you back!
Before we know it, Advent will begin on the last Sunday of November. It is a time for reflec-
tion and anticipation of the birth of Jesus. May your celebrations be full of peace, joy and love.
Keep a song in heart.

INVESTMENT STOCK TO ADD TO YOUR PORTFOLIO
We are always scouring the financial pages to find the next Apple, Amazon or Chipolte Stock to add to our
portfolio. We believe we have found a clear "winner" for you based upon advice from Morningstar we should
all purchase several shares of Highlands Ridge Pickleball Stock (symbol HRPB, NASDAQ) $30.
Warren Buffet has already taken a strong position in the stock and local Raymond James Financial Advisor,
I. Dink, has included HRPB in his highly rated Retirement Portfolio. Both Buffet and Dink trumpet the
strong leadership team HRPB has as one of the reasons the stock will continue to grow, believing the stock
has the potential to reach $50 in the next year and continue to reward investors at 10% per year over the next
several decades! Dividends are expected to reach 4% per share in the near future.
The strong leadership team has attracted bright, energetic and enthusiastic talent from Michigan, Ohio, Indi-
ana, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Illinois to grow the value of the stock. Foreign countries, England, Scot-
land and New Jersey, are also represented in the talent base.
The "soft" dividends from this stock are clearly outstanding: exercise which wards off the onset of age, com-
petition to keep minds sharp, laughter to keep us healthy, beer to help our carbohydrate intake, advice on the
best beauticians, best restaurants, best trips, best cars, best buys at Beall's, best bikes to buy and best equip-
ment to buy.
We urge you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enrich your portfolio by attending informa-
tive meetings at the HRPB business offices on Golden Tee Road each morning at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and most
afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the advanced "stock pickers." There will also be special meetings for
ladies (so they can be smarter than their partners about this stock) Tuesdays at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. usually fol-
lowed by good food and drink with more deep discussion about the stock.
Let's all get wealthy and invest in HRPB! Bob Cisler, taking a strong position in HRPB.

had lined up took a full-time job in Marketing with a

instructor. I will keep you updated. Stay fit.

Marina Cove:
There will be a $45 late fee if you do not pay the
annual trash bill by October 31, 2016. The ad-valorem
charge is $132.36 and is due in our office by January
1, 2017. The trash invoice and ad-valorem charge will
not be drafted. You must pay these invoices with a
check or money order. The new lot rent will take
effect on January 1, 2017. If you are on draft, the new
amount will be deducted. No need to call the office to
change. If you have any questions about the trash bill
or the ad-valorem charge, please call the office or

please notify the office of your absence. Please do not
park in any other rental spot except for the rental spot
that you were assigned. If someone is parked in your
assigned rental spot please notify the office. Do not
park at the storage lot. Take your vessel back to your
home until we clear your assigned rental spot. If you
park in someone else’s assigned rental spot then we
will have an ongoing situation. As soon as your as-
signed rental spot is clear, we will call you. Situations
like this are minor and can be cleared up with one sim-
ple phone call. Thank you.
Marina Cove Trash & Recycling Containers:
Per the Prospectus Exhibit “C” page C-4 …”Rubbish
containers except for the morning of pickup day, are to
be kept in a concealed area.” Management realizes
once the recycling program begins in our community
that some residents will not have room in their garage
to fit two 65 gallon cans. We are working on the
guidelines that will be accepted as a “concealed area”
for the outside of the home. A notice will be mailed to
each homeowner in November. Thank you for your
attention in this matter.

Club Operations
By: Joe Pace, President, J & P Golf Proper ties, LLC
As many of you have heard, Highlands Ridge Golf Club was sold.
We would like to introduce ourselves to everyone here at Highlands Ridge Community as the proud owners
of Highlands Ridge Golf Club. My name is Joe Pace and my wife’s name is Pam.
We have two small Min-Pins and their names are Roxie and Rocky. We moved here from South Florida
after living there for over 35years. We moved to Sebring at the end of June of this year, to the Country Club
of Sebring. In the city of Margate, we owned and operated The Carolina Golf Club for twelve years. I also
owned a restaurant in Virginia Beach, VA before moving to Florida. I am a Lifetime PGA Member and
share the love of the game as many of you do.
Our first day at Highlands Ridge Golf Course was so encouraging. The warm wishes, the greetings, the
thankfulness that many of you showed us was so amazing. Starting a new chapter in your life is overwhelm-
ing as many of you know and especially those who have done so in the past. We would like to thank each
and every one of you for the beginning of a wonderful relationship.
Our first week we were challenged by the threat of Hurricane Matthew. We closed both golf courses as
suggested by the authorities and for the safety of our employees and members. But we were very fortunate,
the hurricane did not come inland like expected, just some rain and minimal winds.
We have fallen in love with the Highlands Ridge Golf Courses and the area. We feel with a good plan we
can get the courses to the next level and better than they were 6 years ago. We really hope all of you under-
stand the task that is at hand and are willing to give us your support while we strive to make the two courses
the finest courses in Highlands County area. Remember, as the courses improve, your home values improve
also and everyone should be supporting the efforts to improve the values of their homes and the surrounding
areas.
Future Plans for the Golf Courses We are in the process of rebuilding the 13th Tee and the number 1 tee on the south course. The condition of
the tees on the south course are not to our standards, so we will be overseeding all the tees on the south
course for the winter season. In the spring, my goal is to start a tree pruning project and rebuild all the tees
on the south course. Shade and Grass are not a good combination, so we will need to cut some of the trees
back due to the overgrowth over the years that has taken a toll on the tees on the south course.
2017 Memberships After reviewing the Membership package and, doing comparisons with other club memberships we have
decided to revise the Senior “80” membership and offer some discounts for those that are actually 80 and
over. We are not going to raise the membership dues on the other memberships that we are offering. We feel
that the dues are of fair value because they include the cart/trail fees locking in your price for the year. You
can find the Membership Packages in the Golf Pro Shops. Please keep in mind we are in a building stage
trying to redo the golf courses and we are counting on your support.
Positive Note With determination and dedication from all, we can make our golf courses and community, the true treasure
that it is.

New Chef
It is with pleasure I’d like to introduce Chef Robin Norton.
Robin comes to us from a long career of cooking endeavors.
Loving to travel, mostly by sailboat, cooking has been a great way to have a job, no matter
where you end up. He has spent time, and cooked, up and down both the East and West
coasts of Florida. He spent four years in the Bahamas and 15 years in South Carolina, as
Chef at Le Midi, a French Restaurant on Kind Street and the famous Carolina Yacht Club.
Having settled down (somewhat) and calling Avon Park home, Chef Robin says “it is a
delight to find such a nice place as Highlands Ridge Golf Club to prepare good food for
good people”. Please don’t hesitate to ask Chef Robin for any party ideas, he is here for
you.
NOVEMBER 2016 GOLF NEWS PAGE 15
Summer has come to an end and all our friends from the north will be returning
soon to Highlands Ridge. I am very much looking forward to seeing all of you again. Exciting things are
happening here at Highlands Ridge Golf Club. New owners Joe and Pam Pace have taken the helm and the
team and I look forward to working with them to make Highlands Ridge a success. Some new and old faces
will be seen at the north and south golf shops. Ethan Lewandowski has rejoined the team and Ian Landry will
return in November.
I expect a smooth transition into our busy season. Welcome Ethan and Ian back when you see them. Say
hello to Gary Hurtubise at the north when you stop by. New team member Kristine Porter comes to us with
plenty of retail experience and always has a cheerful smile on her face. The team looks forward to making
each and every round you play at Highland Ridge a very enjoyable experience.
The new scorecards are here giving all who play Highlands Ridge several different yardages to choose from.
Simply play the yardage that gives you the most enjoyment. Give them a try and let us know what you think.
Remember to sign up for the many exciting events to be held by the MGA, LGA, Couples and Highlands
Ridge. A few that you may want to sign up for now are the LGA and MGA welcome back events. We will
begin the monthly member scrambles at the end of the November. You can find more information and sign-
up at the south golf shop. Let’s all enjoy this game we love. It is all about keeping it fun!
Rules Corner: The USGA handicapping system is one of the best for providing a fair way for player’s of all skill levels to
compete. When player’s post their scores they create a handicap index. This index is used to convert to a
handicap for the course that you play. Many of you are familiar with taking your index to another course and
converting to a handicap for that course. Some of our player’s have questions about posting enough scores
for a handicap on our new combo tees. You create an index at Highlands Ridge regardless of the tees you
play from. Similar to playing different courses, your index converts to the selected tees you choose to play at
Highlands Ridge. When you get your course handicap, the computer does the conversion automatically
based on your default tee selection (the tees that you most commonly play).
I hope this clears up some of your questions. Feel free to ask myself or any of the professional staff if you
need more clarification.

MGA News
By: Phil Hunter, Secretary
!
The new MGA Board met last week, and we'd like to welcome everyone coming back to
Highlands Ridge and to up date you on MGA news. Board members are: Kim Lathwell (Pres.), Ron Swan
(VP), Sam Cline (Tr.), Phil Hunter (Sec.), Gary Dobereiner (Tourn. Dir.), and Bob Gray.
Reminder that your $20 dues need to be paid (by check only) on or before the "Welcome Back Scramble"
on Tuesday, Nov., 15 at the South Course. You may also pay Sam Cline or leave a check at the South
Course Pro Shop. Your $20 dues include your hole in one insurance for either gold or white tees.
The Board discussed in depth the new blended tees & has decided not to use them in our major MGA events
at this time. Since many MGA members don't fully understand their use, have not yet had a chance to try
them and due to the complexities of incorporating them into flights, CTP's, hole-in-one payouts, and handi-
capping fairness, it was unanimously agreed it's too early to use them. The Board will be holding a special
"Blended Tees Event" in January to allow the members to try them out and we'll bring up the topic when we
meet as a group throughout the year and a decision will be made next spring at our "Going Away Scramble"
in April. The Divorce Open Committee has made the same decision so we want to be consistent with them.
At last Spring's "Going Away Scramble" we voted to allow mixed gold & white tee players as partners in all
our events and in flights determined by gold/white handicaps adjusted according to USGA rules. The Board
respectfully requests and encourages all members to maintain accurate handicaps and record all your scores.
Sign ups for all events will be at the South Course. Look for the "Two Man Scramble" and "Welcome Back
Scramble" sign-ups and full year events calendars at both courses.
If you are not receiving e-mails from MGA, please contact Kim Lathwell, 382-9719, [email protected]

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL FOR THE “WINTER” ROUND ROBIN
October has been a very interesting month with lots of activity on and off the golf courses --- and
I'm not talking about the impending election! On the home front, the most exciting news: The golf courses
are under new ownership and soon we will all be there to meet and greet the new owners. Of course, many
of you have already met the Paces and are showing them the great hospitality for which Highlands Ridge is
known! Earlier in the month, we dodged a very big bullet when Hurricane Matthew stayed further out to sea
long enough to miss us. Although many of the snowbirds were not in Paradise, we were anxiously glued to
our televisions and other devices keeping close watch on Matthew's path. Thankfully, we were spared the
devastation experienced by those closer to the coast.
In golf, the US recaptured the Ryder Cup, the first since 2008, as Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson led the
charge against a very talented but less experienced Euro team. And all of this happened during an emotion-
filled week in which the King passed away. RIP Arnold Palmer!
Now, with November upon us, we look forward to the Ladies Golf League gaining momentum as everyone
returns for the season, and of course, the Divorce Open is just around the corner. I look forward to seeing
you all on the links!
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening -- and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented". Arnold Palmer
