Lincolns MarioBalderas is one busy man with three busi-nesses in full operation inLincoln.

First and most visible isFreedom Rides, a motor-cycle and trike sales deal-ership located at 643 G St.in Lincoln that he runs with his brother, Tomas.

The business opened intheir newest location thispast January, having for-merly been located at 183Flocchini Circle in Lin-coln.

Balderas also owns andoperates a bookkeeping enterprise, specializing inservice to the Spanish-speaking community in

Lincoln and the GreaterSacramento area. Andfinally, he owns a tax serv-ice as a California Regis-tered Tax Preparer, authorized to prepare tax-es for other taxpayers.

All three businesses arehoused in the same build-ing, which Mario owns, at643 G St.

Arriving from Mexico with his mother in 1969,Balderas established hisroots and chose tobecome a naturalized cit-izen, grow his family anddevelop a business careerin Lincoln over the nextseveral years. He startedseveral small businessesand, for approximately five years, owned a musicbusiness in the Joiner

    But Balderas wife

refused to ride the two- wheeler. So he had thetwo-wheeled motorcycleconverted to a three- wheeler, called a trike. That conversion processtook nearly eight months, according to Balderas.

Balderas and his broth-er, Tomas, had long beendiscussing opening a

business together. So they decided to blend theirskills to open FreedomRides in 2008 at 183 Floc-chini Circle. His brotherhad the mechanical skillsas an industrial mechanicto handle the details of trike conversions while hecould handle sales andmarketing and keep thebooks. Balderas wife pro-vided additional expertise with her extensive work experience in radio salesand marketing.

    Lincolns two public golf

courses are Lincoln Hills andTurkey Creek while Catta Verdera Country Club is private.

Lincoln Hills has two 18-holecourses while Turkey Creek andCatta Verdera each have one 18-hole loop.

This year, the two publiccourses, Lincoln Hills andTurkey Creek will host approxi-mately up to 40 charitable tour-naments between them this year while Catta Verdera Coun-try Club will be home for anoth-er 25 tournaments.

Theproceeds go to SutterCancer Centers BreastCancer Navigator Pro-gram, Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkin-sons Research, Diogenes Youth Services, Closing the Gap Educational Achievement and World Vision.

So, while fundraising fornonprofit foundations hastaken a hit during therecent economic down-turn and struggles contin-ue, the evidence is clear

that Lincoln golf courseoperators are aggressively pursuing options to helpfill the nonprofits treasur-ies.

We have an inherentresponsibility to give back to the community, Lin-coln Hills Silva said. Itmakes me feel better atthe end of the day.

Those comments might well be applied to all those

involved in organizing and directing charity golf events in Lincoln.

M any outdoor animals can sufferfrom foxtail migrations. Foxtailsmay get lodged around the eyes, nose, mouth ears, coat and paws.Pet owners should be aware of the fol-lowing signs, which may indicate thepresence of foxtails:

Eye swelling or squinting of the eye, sticky discharge

Sneezing or discharge from the nose Repeated gagging or difficulty chew-

ing or swallowing; trouble eating Bad odor from the mouth, ears or

nose Head tilting, shaking or scratching at

    the ears

Continuous licking or biting at thepaws or other areas Abscesses ( puss-filled pockets ) Opens sores, which can be the

remains of an open abscess but may stillhave a foxtail inside.

At the first sign of a foxtail, you shouldbring your pet to a veterinarian immedi-ately to avoid further damage from

migration of the foxtail. Dogs seem tosuffer because the foxtails becomeimbedded in their coats.

Because of their meticulous grooming habits, cats are less likely to have foxtail

issues. But cats occasionally get them inthe eye. Corneal damage occurs fast withthis seedpod stuck under the third eyelidof the animal.

All animals, including horses, are atrisk of serious problems if they snort afoxtail into their nasal passages.

We recommend regular grooming during the summer months. Withoutthis, foxtails can become embedded in your animals coats, eventually piercing their skin and causing infections.

The sharp end points and microscopic

barbs of foxtails ensure travel in only onedirection further inside the animalsbody. Once inside, foxtail removalbecomes a surgical procedure and mustbe done by a veterinarian.

Thinking about buying intodays market? Right now is a great time to buy. Priceshave gone down dramatically and interest rates are still low. There is still a lot of inventory and many great opportunitiesbut there are some factors youshould think about before theexcitement causes you to makea mistake.

Hire a professional Although there are many

good websites that give youaccess to numerous home list-

ings, you should hire an agent who will work for you. Hire one who knows the area well, including school boundaries, proposed construction, HOAs,special assessments, etc. It is worth not only having someone who knows how to negotiate

but also someone who knowseverything about the area.

Be preapproved You need a loan officer who

will educate you and help youunderstand the different loanoptions that are available.

Although you may be hearing that it is a Buyers Market, thecompetition is stiff and youmust be prepared to act quickly after a home comes on the mar-ket. Almost all sellers willrequire a preapproval letter with an offer.

Choose a target area After you decide on an area,

spend some time driving around the neighborhood ondifferent days at various times. What may seem to be a quietneighborhood at 2 p.m. on aTuesday may be totally differenton a Friday evening. Talk to theneighbors and ask them how they like the neighborhood.Speak with your agent aboutthe characteristics that you want in a home. A good agent will listen and wont waste yourtime showing you homes that

you dont want. Create adetailed list of needs and wants.

Understand the process A good agent will help you to

understand the process fromstart to finish. Become educat-ed and dont be afraid to ask

questions. Know the differencebetween a short sale, bank-owned or traditional sale andthe possible challenges of each.Come up with a game plan. Talk with the agent about how you will communicate, best timesfor you to look at homes and letthe agent know what youexpect. Ask the agent what he orshe expects of you as a buyer.

Dont get frustratedThe process can be challeng-

ing. You may get beat out onoffers and there may be some

disappointment. If your offergets rejected, talk with the agentabout why it wasnt acceptedand use the experience to give yourself a better chance on thenext offer. Buying a homeshould be a good experience.Have fun with it.

    Think aheadStart thinking about home

inspectors and other contrac-tors. Once you are in escrow and the appraisal has beendone, it is a good idea to have aprofessional home inspection. On a regular sale, you could ask for repairs to be made. The costof a home inspection can usual-ly be recouped through therepairs you ask to be done. Itcan also save you from making a big mistake.

This is just a short list of what you may want to think about as

you begin. Do your homework and become educated before you make what is usually thebiggest investment in your life.

It was an amazingly fun concert, said TamaraCoil, Lincoln Hills lifestyleevents and volunteercoordinator. Residents were on their feet dancing and loving the music. Allpositive feedback and it was a beautiful night.

F rom sturdy broadleaf to del-icate lace-like and shim-mery linear cultivars, theresa Japanese maple suited foralmost any garden.

Theyre the specialty of LakesNursery in Newcastle, whichhas some 7,000 of the trees more than 200 varieties incultivation.

Theyre a passion for ownerJoe Ciurej and employee LaurieMeyerpeter, a Placer County master gardener.

Ciurej purchased the nursery five years ago from David andJudy Lake, who started the busi-ness more than 30 years ago.

The beautiful trees are welladapted for the foothills, according to Meyerpeter.

They do very well in this cli-mate, she said. They need alittle more shade and care in(the heat).

Most Japanese maples prefermorning sun and afternoonshade. But there are fairly widevariations is sun tolerance.

We have a two-page list of ones that are tested for the sun,Meyerpeter said.

The best time to plant thetrees is fall, winter and spring,

although landscapers putthem in all summer long, shesaid.

When you are ready to plant, dig a hole twice as wide as theroot ball, but not any deeper. You dont want the tree below ground level, she explained.

The trees dont need alot of special care and aredisease resistant.

Number one water.Number two water.Number three water, she said. Young Japanesemaples need regular, deep watering. The soilfor the first years shouldhave excellent drainageand it should be pretty much moist all the time not wet, but like adamp sponge. As the treematures, it needs less water.

    Feeding is a good idea,too.

Its nice to add amend-ments, Meyerpeter said.It is a high-end plant. Amendments will see thegrowth of your tree in thefirst few years. We think you should fertilize yourtrees at least twice a year.

Trimming depends onthe variety and personaltaste.

Some of them you can just thin out the middle,

she said. If you like theshape of the maple, youare doing the right thing.

The trees rarely attractinsects and even deer, although they may nibbleon the leaves, prefer other

things, she said. At the nursery, the culti-vars range from dwarfs, which grow to about 3feet, to full-size trees of upto 25 feet. When searching for a type of maple tree, keep in mind that if youdont find the exact vari-ety, those in the samefamily will share many common characteristics.

    There are many differ-

ent varieties of color, sizesand leaf shape, Meyer-peter said.

Colors range from clas-sic green to shades of pink, red and purple.

Theyre very versatile forthe patio and garden, growing easily in pots as well as in the ground.

For Ciurej, tending thetrees ands serving cus-tomers all over the stateare things he particularly enjoys.

I love being able tohave so many of the treesnearby for myself, hesaid. I like the people, too. Its so exciting to havesomething people havebeen looking for ad findout it has been here all thetime.

W ere recently talkedabout the impor-tance of sharing financial information andpreparing a budget andhow to go about it.

Remember, a budget issimply a spending planand theres nothing mys-terious about it.

But, what of the deci-sions that go into spend-ing your money?

Excuse the shouting here but you have toremember it is your mon-ey and therefore your

    responsibility.Too many consumerslack a structure for theirdecision-making.

As a result, spending decisions are often poorly or incompletely exam-ined.

With that in mind, letsconsider a simple deci-sion model that we havefound useful over the years. It has only five top-ics and they are all inter-related.

    DemandThis is your first consid-

eration. If you are spend-ing money, is it non-dis-cretionary or discre-tionary?

    If its non-discretionary,

its probably a bill forsomething youve already bought or a routine bill forservices received.

In either case, you haveto pay it so the demandquestion is irrelevant.

If its discretionary spending, such as anexpensive toy for one of the kids or a new golf club, ask yourself if this isneeded or nice-to-have.

Dont make a decision yet; just consider the cate-gory.

CostIs this in your spending plan? Can you afford it?How will you pay for it?Cash or credit card?

If its the latter, reexam-ine your demand. Do youreally need this?

Service and supportIf you are buying a

product or signing anagreement for services, can you afford the contin-uing costs?

This ties back to theprevious point. If its aproduct, such as an auto-mobile or computer, areservices available and at what cost? Does it have a warranty as part of thepurchase price?

For example, somecomputers come with a years warranty. Do you

need an extended war-ranty, what services orparts does it include, andis one available for pur-chase?

Ask yourself about yourmachines reliability andfrequency of repair. Go

online to check the com-puters reliability and theircustomer service to help with your expectations.

Performance When do you need or

want the product and is itavailable within the timeframe youve chosen?

Using our example of the computer, do youneed one now because your current machine justdied? And do you need itfor work? If you answeredthose two questions affir-matively, you likely needthe computer immediate-ly, even if you have to pay a premium. This ties back

    to cost.Features, benefits

How did the manufac-turer or service providermarket this to you? Whatfeatures did they high-light? Examine the fea-tures and determine how those features translateinto benefits for you.

A side-by-side compar-ison is useful here. List the

features down a left col-umn and the correspon-

ding benefits in the col-umn next to it. Is anextended warranty avail-able? Do you need it?

Be careful how youanswer that last question.Refer back to our serviceand support question.Remember, all thesepoints are interrelated.

    If the benefits dont

match the features, why should you care about

those features? Considerthem irrelevant. Using ourexample, if an extended warranty is touted as abenefit - at extra cost, of course - but you dont want or need it, dont con-sider that as a useful fea-ture. It does not have acorresponding benefit for you.

But, be critical whenexamining features andtheir importance to you. If you dont need the featurebut want it nevertheless, you might consider thefeature a benefit. Butthats a matter of personalchoice. Be honest with yourself: Is it a matter of

desire or necessity? When using this modelthe first few times, write itdown in long hand or usea computers wordprocessor. A simplespreadsheet can also beuseful.

After a while and sever-al uses, this process orsome variation willbecome second-nature as you analyze your spend-

ing decisions and habits. We hope so!

want it nevertheless, you might considerthe feature a benefit. But thats a matter ofpersonal choice. Behonest with yourself:Is it a matter ofdesire or necessity?
