I, DANIEL BLAKE

11 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Movie magic When: Screening nowI, Daniel Blake, 2016’s cinematic tour de force and winner of the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, made a triumphant return to Newcastle along with its stars and director this month ahead of its run in cinemas nationwide and at Tyneside and Empire cinemas in NE1.

Ken Loach’s (Cathy Come Home, Kes) searing drama about a disabled man and a desperate single mother strangled by the red tape of the benefits system stars Dave Johns, a veteran of Newcastle’s stand-up scene who delivers a beautifully nuanced performance in the title role, alongside Hayley Squires.

This is vintage Loach, a deserved winner of international acclaim and a kitchen sink drama of the most gritty variety, delivered with a lightness of touch which owes much to Johns’ comic background.

The setting - across the North East and in Newcastle

- lends the film a genuine warmth as well as its gritty realism, and thanks to NE1’s Space2 on Pilgrim Street young local actors were given a chance to appear in the film too.

Junior Atlassi, 19, appears in a speaking role which has since led to more acting work, while a total of 30 young people from Space2 took part in the film.

Of his choice of Newcastle to set the film, Loach said: “Newcastle is culturally very rich. The culture is very expressive and the language is very strong. There’s a great sense of resistance; generations of struggle have developed a strong political consciousness.”

This shines through in the film - a deserved recipient of international critical acclaim. Unmissable.Tyneside Cinema & Empire Cinema tynesidecinema.co.uk & empirecinemas.co.uk

PETER HIGGS

13 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Recommends

The science bitWhen: November 1Prof Peter Higgs, the man who theorised the existence of the ‘God particle’ and one of the biggest brains in the universe, is returning to his home city of Newcastle for a rare public event. Science writer Graham Farmelo will interview the Nobel Prize-winning physicist in a fascinating show which, we are assured, does not require an encyclopaedic knowledge of sub-atomic physics to enjoy it (honest). Here’s more…

Peter Higgs is one of the greatest scientists in the world today, but he doesn’t shout about it, which means appearances like this one are rare and you’re highly unlikely to see him make a cameo appearance on Geordie Shore.

He predicted the existence of the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle (though he is not keen on the name), while working at Edinburgh University in 1964.

What is it? Well... hmm, it’s complicated but here goes - the boson provides mass to the most basic building blocks of matter. Without it... there wouldn’t be any physics lessons at school - or any of us here.

Having theorised the particle’s existence in 1964, it took 48 years and two separate experiments using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - and the whole ‘it could create a black hole’ thing which scared the stupid people - to find it.

On the particle’s discovery in 2012, super scientist Stephen Hawking, who had bet $100 that it would never be found (seems a bit mean, Stephen), is said to have lamented the loss of his cash. He did say, however, that it should earn Higgs the Nobel Prize, and so it did, in 2013.

And how has Prof Higgs reacted to his celebrity? Well he doesn’t do interviews for the likes of us - as he says: “it’s a bit of a nuisance sometimes.”Life Science Centre, life.org.uk

Indie darling Jake Bugg continues his meteoric rise since he first came to our attention and opened NE1's Space2 in 2012, despite the dubious pleasure of being labelled the voice of his generation – a label which doesn’t sit well with his “I’m just doing my thing, man” approach.

Still just 22, he’s proved himself a talented musician with a wide-ranging repertoire which includes Trouble Town, the soundtrack to the BBC series Happy Valley, and his recent single Gimme The Love. The success of his blues and skiffle-inspired work continues to grow here and in the US, and the inevitable result will be that he won’t be playing venues this intimate for long. BEAUTY & THE BEAST

Tale as old as timeWhen: November 8-12

19 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

The words ‘timeless tale’ are well worn when it comes to Beauty & The Beast, but Northern Ballet’s artistic director David Nixon achieves genuine originality in this opulent production, praised for its cinematic-style beauty.

Northern Ballet Sinfonia’s score combines Saint-Saens, Bizet and Debussy, creating a magical, fantastical accompaniment to this dreamy production.

This is not an adaptation of the Disney version of the story, which gets a live action remake starring Emma Watson next year; it is based on the original tale and embraces dark and light as Nixon delivers a whirlwind journey to a world inhabited by fairies, goblins and sprites, where the story’s darker undercurrents are juxtaposed with glorious haute couture costumes and world-class performances.
