Has Old Ties to Kensington Ave

fall 2014

Although Clayton Chandler recently

joined NKCDC as the new Commercial

Corridor Steward, he’s been a

long-time organizer and partner

within the neighborhood. Clayton

began working along Kensington Ave

in 2004 through the Ready, Willing,

and Able program of the Greater

Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

Since then, Clayton has always

advocated for clean and green

community spaces. He continues this

work as the new Commercial Corridor

Steward—a program funded by a grant from the

Department of Commerce to catalyze economic

development and neighborhood pride along

commercial corridors. Clayton joins NKCDC’s other

Corridor Steward, Mariusz Turk on bike or on foot,

rain or shine to provide cleaning services, graffiti

removal, and ongoing communication between

business owners to connect them to valuable small

business resources.

If you ask him about just a couple of projects he’s

participated on, you’ll get a sense of the deep roots

he’s already established. During his decade-long

partnership working with

the Community Center at

Visitation on the 2600

block of Kensington Ave

to clean-up and beautify

many of Kensington’s

vacant lots, Clayton has

helped advocate for Litter

Free Zones around SEPTA

stations and throughout

the whole neighborhood.

Together with residents at

Visitation Homes, the

Community Center at Visitation, and students from

Visitation BVM School, one empty lot was

transformed into a community garden that won a

2011 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Community

Greening Award.

Although he needs no introduction to many of the

residents and community organizations he’s already

met throughout the years, please welcome him to

the neighborhood.

On July 15th, the Philadelphia City Planning Com-

mission (PCPC) unanimously voted to accept the

North of Lehigh Neighborhood Revitalization Plan—

published last December after three years of active

engagement led by NKCDC with community stake-

holders.

“The Commissioners showed great support. The

unanimous decision demonstrated a strong vote of

confidence at a key time for the plan,” said NKCDC

Community Engagement Director, Andrew Good-

man, who attended the PCPC meeting.

As a part of Phila2035, PCPC is undergoing a

“comprehensive planning process to create district

plans that will provide recommendations on future

land use, development opportunities, urban design,

and proposed zoning.”

The plan will be incorporated into the upcoming

River Wards district planning process and any large

future developments in the service area will be

weighed against the key priorities of the plan.

Among the top priorities in the North of Lehigh Plan

is Orinoka Civic House--a vacant textile factory that

NKCDC hopes to redevelop. When this multi-income

residential, office, and commercial development is

built North of Lehigh, it will assist in anchoring more

resources there.

priorities and read

comes to NKCDC by

way of Pittsburgh,
