As you look through this year’s
CJNARI directory, keep in mind the
members listed are the best of the
remodeling industry in New Jersey.
They have all agreed to uphold the
NARI Code of Ethics in dealing with
customers, suppliers and employees.
This means they deal with everyone
honestly and fairly.
All companies are registered with the State of New Jersey
and carry insurance. Further, they have committed to
furthering their education through monthly meetings and
certification classes. These traits are not common in the
remodeling industry, a fact that can be easily proven by
talking to most people who have had remodeling projects
undertaken by non-NARI members.
CJNARI members are justifiably proud of their
profession, and the work they do. The annual Contractor of
the Year Awards (CotY) are a testament to the quality of
work performed by our chapter members. It is no small
thing to be willing to put your work under a microscope to
be judged by other professionals. Yet, that is what many of
our members do, year after year.
Though the economy as a whole is no longer technically
in a recession, the construction industry is. It may come as
a surprise to you—although it shouldn’t—that the quality
of work performed by CJNARI members is as high as ever.
No scrimping, no shaving quality, no cutting corners. The
part of being ethical and delivering what you say you will is
taken very seriously.
Take some time and read in this section what NARI
stands for. I am sure after doing that, when interviewing
contractors for your next project, you will ask them if they
are a member of NARI.

Aurora Kitchens & InteriorsResidential Interior SpecialtyThis Hunterdon County homeowner had a “laundry list” of things she wanted to include in one ofthe most often overlooked rooms of the house. She wanted a spot to fold clothes; storage for shoes, gloves, hats and scarves; an area for mounting the central vacuum cleaner hose to the wall; a utilitysink; hooks for mops and coats; and a drying rack—all to be coordinated with the kitchen’s décor.Difficulties were encountered in installing cabinets the height of the washer and dryer, and in raisingthe plumbing and electrical hookups above the countertop. A custom cabinet was designed forstorage of laundry products, and the closet was redesigned and compartmentalized.
.
Aurora Kitchens & InteriorsResidential Bath under $30,000The homeowners wanted a second-floor hall bathroom with easier access to the bathtub; more andbetter storage; separate spaces for each of the two children; a sophisticated, kid-friendly space; and acontrolled budget. A unique design approach was taken—packages were created detailing all fixtures, finishes and labor costs at different price points, so they could make their choices based on a completebudget analysis. Sacrifices were made to achieve the new bathroom within budget. The existingbathtub leaked into the powder room below, so a new tub—deeper for soaking and wider—requiredthe drain to be re-centered. Part of the powder room’s ceiling was remodeled to access the tubplumbing. Child-friendly details were integrated, including separate spaces with mirrors and outlets, accessories and lights to minimize arguments.
Landscape Aesthetics, Inc.Residential Exterior SpecialtyThe homeowners wanted an extension of their outdoor living area from theexisting raised deck, and access to their sloping backyard. The deck was setoff from the yard due to its height and lack of steps down into the area. Byinstalling a raised bluestone patio, adding new wood steps from the deck tothe patio, and stone slab steps to the lower yard, Landscape Aestheticscreated a flowing transition. Re-grading and re-contouring the backyarddrained water away from the structure, allowing the existing deck to beretained, and the project to come in within budget. The outdoor fireplaceand cooking area were positioned to provide views of the property’s existingnatural pond and new plantings and a walkway were installed.

Aurora Kitchens & InteriorsResidential Kitchen $40,000 to $80,000The list of complaints was long: not enough storage, not comfortable for more than oneperson to work, tight access and nowhere to sit. Several design options were prepared, withbudget considerations explained. The laundry room was knocked out and repositioned inthe basement. The closet was opened up, revealing that the house’s original beam wasundersized and sagging by ¾ inch. Also, ceiling joists were resting on a non-load bearingwall. MSI Plumbing + Remodeling with team member Aurora Kitchens & Interiorscreated a structurally sound and fully functional kitchen.
.
K&D ContractorsResidential Kitchen $80,001 to $120,000Updating a 1960’s kitchen has its difficulties, especially when the room has its own impediments, suchas a wall oven that juts out into the traffic flow. Plus, today’s homeowners desire more storage space, and an energy-efficient area. With technological advances in spray foam insulation and windowefficiencies, K+D Contractors was able to provide a warm, aesthetically pleasing and functional kitchenwith increased day lighting and work space. Relocating the oven, closet, and laundry room door, andinstalling taller cabinets, established increased storage and better traffic flow. The homeowner got abrighter, cheerier kitchen, with a more effective use of space.
.
Aurora Kitchens & InteriorsResidential Kitchen under $40,000Condo kitchens can be frustrating when remodeling becauseexpanding the room is not an option. So this Flemingtonhomeowner—with a lack of space, the stove next to a wall, no roomfor a table and the refrigerator door blocking access to the room whenopen—thought nothing could be done. Re-configuring the trafficpattern and relocating the appliances were key to achieving the desiredresults. The original kitchen had “blind wall corner cabinets” over thesink, so by installing full-size wall cabinets with mullion-glass doors, the homeowner has more usable space and easier access to thecontents. The kitchen window’s drafts were ended by pulling back thesiding and installing spray foam insulation. A peninsula with seatingprovides more storage and space for in-room meals.
.
M.J. Cushing & Associates, Inc. with team member Hunterdon KitchensResidential Bath over $60,000The project included converting the existing second-floor laundry room and storage room over thegarage into a walk-thru closet, new bathroom and washer/dryer enclosure. The project was to bedesigned and built into a sloped roof space. A new roof window was cut in, as was a new end-wallwindow. Plumbing fixtures for the tub, shower, toilet and lavatory were installed as well as customcabinetry in the bathroom and closet area. The existing washer and dryer location was closed offwith doors to conceal the utility area, and a wide-screen TV was mounted to be visible from thetub and shower.

Hunterdon KitchensResidential Kitchen over $120,000Updating a builder’s-grade kitchen in a 1996 home with a growing family requiredrelocating everything. An entirely new room layout was designed. A new Prairie-stylewindow brought in more light and created a focal point from the front door. Radiantheat was installed under the tile floor and a leathered-look nine-ft. center island wascreated. A smoothie bar was incorporated into the peninsula overlooking the familyroom. In creating such a large space, there was a need to offer visual distinctions—aunique marble backsplash in three-dimensional wave pattern, and two differentpatterns of granite countertops.
.
Houghton Contracting, LLCResidential Interior under $100,000In updating the entire first floor of this 21-year-old home, HoughtonContracting did not encounter any extreme obstacles. Pulling up carpetingand laying hardwood flooring throughout the foyer, dining room, livingroom, family room and kitchen added to the renewed feeling of the project.Opening the kitchen into the family room, removing the knee wall betweenthe rooms, and adding an island as dividing space provided more storageand countertops for the homeowners. Crown molding and updated basemolding and window casings added to the ambiance of the home.
.
Aurora Kitchens & InteriorsCommercial InteriorWhen people think of auto body shops, what come to mind are oil, grease, dirt andgrime. A new breed of auto body shop is making its debut. The goal of this projectwas creating a space in which customers would feel comfortable. Designing a spacethat is clean and inviting has its challenges since mechanics often track oil and greasefrom the shop into the waiting area when speaking with customers. Flooring was keyto cleanliness and maintenance. A concrete floor topped with a multi-tile patterncarpet was selected for durability. Leather chairs and sofa create a seating area withaccess to TV and wireless Internet, and decorative details gave an upscale feeling.

Hunterdon KitchensResidential Addition $100,000-$250,000Desiring a more luxurious master bathroom with walk-in closet, and alarger office/study on the first floor, the homeowners also were able toreceive a walk-out basement access to the backyard pool and a powderroom for guests. Bumping out the downstairs office provided anotheropening onto the backyard deck. The master bath now boasts a doublevanity and make-up area, radiant-heat flooring, a new soaking tub and a 3ft. X 5 ft. shower with a granite seat. The new walk-in closet has anorganizing system, and the expanded first-floor office has views of thepool, deck and hills in the distance.
