Feeling really good inside? These days it

seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month.

Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist.

She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know

more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly.

“You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

Feel Good Factor is completely unique because it concentrates on lymphatic health and fluid retentive problems associated with weight gain. You can do private or small exercise classes and get on the road to fitness, reduce, tone and tighten up targeting specific areas you need i.e. waist and thighs.

Just breathing pumps lymphatics without running. FGF has a full range of therapies addressing the issue of being overweight and health related problems. All Yvette`s therapists including Karolina, personal exercise instructor are aware of the importance of lymphatic health in the fight against weight, fluid retention, disease and health they are there to help assist

Happy New Year! Here we are again at the beginning of a brand

new year. It feels like a fresh start.

If you have made resolutions for the coming year then I wish

you luck and perseverance. One of my friends recently told me

that every three months she and her husband would go out to

a favourite coffee place make a list of things they wanted to

achieve within a three month period. And every three months

they would review what they did and then set things for the

next three months. They actually got quite a few things done

this last year which is great.

Every one has their own methods of getting things done. But

however you do it, setting goals for 2012 can be the start to

great things. At the end of the day it is all about living which can

be as enjoyable and rewarding as we decide to make it.

On that note, we will see you next month.

Lots of good wishes for 2012 and we hope it is a good one

for you.

are you ready for the 25th adur Festival 2012?

The extremely popular and beloved Adur Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012 and will run from Friday 1st June to Sunday 17th June 2012. The Festival

encompasses a host of cultural activities including theatre, music, literature, history, food, markets and the arts. There is always something for everyone and 2012 will be no exception.

Clare Mangan, Adur and Worthing Councils' Regeneration Manager said: “Next year we are hoping for more events and visitors than ever during the Festival period especially as our 25th year is very special with both the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics happening over the summer”.

So put your thinking caps on and do something special for the 25th Adur Festival which coincides with the Diamond Jubilee.

Anyone wanting to put on an event for the Festival can register the details: online at www.adurfestival.com; or by contacting the Regeneration Team at Adur and Worthing Councils on [email protected]; or telephone Pamela Driscoll on 01273 263274.

Shoreham Harbour regeneration – right up your streetadur CounCil, working with Brighton & Hove City

Council, West Sussex County Council and the Shoreham Port Authority, are preparing a Draft Joint Area Action Plan to set out the future vision and planning policies for the harbour area over the next 15-20 years.

As part of developing the plans local people living and working in the Shoreham Harbour area — which stretches from Hove Lagoon through to East Street/Ferry Road in Shoreham — are being asked how they would like to see the 'street scape' around the Harbour look in the future.

Consultants BDP have been appointed to prepare a Streetscape Guide which will be used to shape the 'character' and 'look' of public realm in the Shoreham Harbour area and will be used to assist in determining future development in this important area.

“Initial findings from locals at the November Shoreham Farmers Market held in the newly pedestrianised East Street were extremely positive and very encouraging” says Mehron Kirk, Director at BDP.

Jim Funnell, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Adur District Council, adds: “It was really great to see the town buzzing so much. East Street looks fantastic now and will be a valuable space for all sorts of exciting activities in the future. It certainly demonstrates how improvements to public realm can transform an area and assist the local economy”.

If you want to view the exhibition boards and complete the survey on the Streetscape Guidance visit the 'How to Get Involved' page of www.shorehamharbour.com. The Draft document will be placed on the website for comment during January 2012.

adur and Worthing set to welcome the olympic torchAdur and Worthing has been chosen as a host location and extends an invitation to its people to welcome the Olympic Flame on 16th July 2012.

Adur and Worthing are two areas out of 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in Sussex to devise the route.

Peter Latham, Chief Executive for Adur and Worthing councils, says: "This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone to take part – in our own way – in the Olympics. We are really excited the Olympic Torch is coming through our communities as it will, for sure, be a most spectacular sight and something some of us will only see once in our lifetime."

Christmas tree recycling

in January oF each year Adur & Worthing Council Services provides collections for real Christmas trees. Your unwanted real Christmas trees should be put out for

recycling from the 10th January 2011 on your normal refuse collection days — the garden waste is collected weekly and resumes on this date so your real Christmas trees will be collected if put out. If you are not sure when your collection day is then see collection days for domestic recycling and refuse.

Alternatively, they can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Site at Brighton Road Shoreham-by-Sea. Both options the trees go for composting!

(Please note : with these new collection arrangements there will not be any Christmas tree recycling compounds at either Buckingham Park or Lancing Manor Leisure Centre).

If your real Christmas tree still has its roots then plant it out in your garden.

Please remember to remove all the decorations, baubles, tinsel and twinkly lights from your Christmas tree before putting it out for collection!

If you have an artificial tree then please package it away carefully and save it for re-use next Christmas along with all your decorations, tinsel and lights.

ALWAYS CALL 999 IN AN EMERGENCY

WE hAvE SEEN a huge rise in scam mail being sent to homes in Adur and the surrounding area, the latest of these have been headed with Hong Kong and China Bank details and addresses . All telling you how lucky you are to be able to receive…cash…prizes…

They are of course SCAMS.

How to stay Scam SafeIf you receive a dazzling letter, do not respond (Not even to say that, you know its a scam!)

If you do, it will go on whats known to the scammers as a SUCKERS list.

Once your name is on a "suckers" list, the only way to stop receiving scam mail is to stop responding!

Never send cash, disclose personal details or buy goods to claim a prize!

If you receive a suspicious phone call. Remember, you do not have to get into any discussions over the phone with anyone, never give out personal information such as bank and credit card details. These could be used fraudulently.

Keep your business, your business.

What tricks do the scammers use?Scammers are very crafty. They know how to dazzle minds and shut down the normal thought process. Someone whose mind has been dazzled will become excited and start to focus on the prize rather than the fact that they are being asked to send cash to claim it.

Here are just a few of the dazzling words and statements scammers use:

Congratulations, Won The Lottery, Guaranteed Winner, Highly Confidential, Unclaimed Prize/ Award, Sworn to Secrecy, Time Sensitive Document.

Once scammers have dazzled and hooked their victims, they trap them in a never ending cycle of letters and payments by asking for taxes, release fees, administration charges and anything else they can think of to keep the victim sending cash.

To make the scams more convincing scammers often ask the victim how they would like the non-existent payment to be made e.g. Cash, Cheque or Money Transfer?

What other tricks do scammers use?Scammers send out false testimonials and photographs of fictitious winners. They claim to be lottery officials, presidents of banks, solicitors, clairvoyants and use other important sounding titles and names.

Scammers sometimes disguise their mailbox addresses by calling them things like suites, units or apartments to create the illusion they are operating from a traceable office or grand building.

Scammers try to trick people into sending them passports, photographs and birth certificates and pretend they are arranging celebration parties or sending out photographers.

REMEMBER if it sounds TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, it proberly is. DON’T BE SUCKED INTO IT.

The lasT Few years have been a financial shock to many of us. Previously we may have taken our finances for granted.

Business was booming and jobs were safe; things have now changed. The credit crunch and the global financial crisis have all hit home. We are all looking at our finances with much more scrutiny, making sure our hard earned money is not wasted and making the most of the more simple things in life. (things that cost less, generally).

Some people have used this time to really take control of their finances, checking exactly what they are paying for and making sure it is still relevant. By making a review there can be great savings to be made. The first thing to check is your mortgage, the remortgage deals are now so competitive you could make a good saving each month. If you call me at Talk Money, I can make an initial assessment over the phone to see if it is worthwhile looking at other deals, it literally takes only a few minutes.

Not only your mortgage, but out of date policies can be a waste of money especially if your situation has changed. For example, a self employed person still paying for redundancy cover, you cannot be made redundant if you are self employed and this policy would not pay out. You may have taken life cover when you were a smoker, but have since given up. A substantial saving could be made each month. These examples are quite common, and there are many more. You can see how things get out of date.

What can i do to help?As an independent financial adviser I deal with the whole spectrum of financial advice. I can check out your mortgage and also any protection plans, pensions or investments. I would make sure any policies are still relevant to you and make sure you are getting the most for your money. I have access to the whole market place and can compare your current arrangements with others on offer. Often the process will make you a monthly saving or will give you more for your money.

Your pensions and investments could be languishing in funds which are not performing. You may see your pension as being “frozen”, meaning you are no longer paying in, but it is still invested. A difference in performance can have a great impact

on your retirement income. This is your money, it’s important to make sure it’s looked after and invested in the right place.

It may seem complicated to review things, but we can take the stress of out that. We can contact the life companies directly for information, meaning you don’t have to find all the paperwork. All we need is the policy number, the name of the life company and your permission to obtain the information. if you would like your finances untangled, and an independent review, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. i offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help.

now ThaT The Christmas celebrations are out of the way and

we are into January its always a good time to start looking ahead. Although January can seem a gloomy month, its well worth having a walk around the garden. You’ll be amazed at how many signs of new life there are already. Keep an eye on the clock every evening and you really will notice that the daylight hours are starting to push the dark nights back.

The longer daylight hours are one of the things that help to bring the new growth in the garden as the plants use the daylight to create new energy. There’s still a long way to go though with many cold days ahead of us. If you are looking ahead in the garden, then now is the time to order seed potatoes, vegetable seeds and summer flowering bulbs. It’s well worth shopping around and the internet always throws up lots of bargains, as do many of the garden centers, especially with seeds.

If you’re trying to get a head start in the garden then using cloches to cover the ground and help retain heat in the soil is a good start. By the end of the month you could start to sow carrots, spinach and broad beans in the cloches. If you have rhubarb in the garden, you can force the rhubarb to produce sweeter stalks by placing a container over the top of it. Bear in mind that you shouldn’t do this if you did it last year as it will exhaust the rhubarb.

Its well worth using a heater in the greenhouse as well, but make sure whatever you use is safe, especially if it’s electrical. If you use a paraffin heater, make sure you ventilate the greenhouse as well. If you need to warm yourself up then dig some trenches for the forthcoming bean sowings and start filling them with compost and other water retaining material such as shredded paper. The more organic material you can fill them with the better. Whilst we are on the subject of compost, if you have been enjoying the benefits of an open fire or a log burner, then don’t let the waste ash go to waste. It can be mixed into the compost heap, or forked into the ground in fruit or vegetable patches.

By now you will hopefully have done a lot of preparation work in the borders, but it’s still not too late to dig them over, but be careful of new spring bulbs raising their heads. It’s a good idea to fluff up any areas of soil that have got compacted by the weather or foot traffic over the winter. It’s still not too late to move any plants that are in the wrong place. Just make sure you avoid a frosty day.

I find that this time of year the garden often takes a pounding from people constantly taking shortcuts across lawns, or through beds, and the damage it leaves very quickly makes this apparent. If this is the case then its well worth considering adapting the garden to incorporate these routes with pathways,

as people will always take the shortest route, especially when in a hurry.

Enjoy the garden and get going as spring will soon be here!

More blood donors needed in Shoreham and Southwick

They are all life-savers.

Are you?

give blood

have you ever considered helping those in need or saving lives? NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is reminding people to

donate blood at a local session in Shoreham and Southwick to help save lives.

One donation can save and improve the lives of up to three sick and injured patients who may need blood after undergoing surgery, or as part of their treatment for cancer (after chemotherapy), in trauma or after complications with childbirth.

Red cells are often transfused to patients suffering from anaemia and severe blood loss while platelets help blood clot and are used to treat those suffering from leukaemia, cancer and with severe infections.

The whole process of donating blood only takes an hour which includes completing essential paperwork and a brief chat with medical staff. The actual blood donation, which is 470ml takes about ten minutes, then you get the opportunity to relax, read and have a cup of tea and a snack.

First time donors should be aged between 17-65, weighing at least 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health. If you’ve donated before, you can start again up to your 70th birthday and there is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. to book an appointment, call the donor line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk.

James FranCis sTephens was born on the 16th September 1792, the only

son of Royal Navy Captain William James Stephens and his wife, Mary Peck Stephens of Shoreham-by-Sea. He first attended the Bluecoat School in Hertford, and then, from 1800, Christ’s Hospital at Horsham. Whilst there he began to develop a keen interest in the abundant insect life of the West Sussex countryside around him. He was a boy with wide interests though and as well as natural history he was also fascinated by philosophy and the early study of electricity.

On the 16th September 1807, his fifteenth birthday, Stephens left Christ’s Hospital to take up a position organised by his uncle Admiral Stephens at the Admiralty Office in Somerset House, London. Whilst working there, in the winter of 1809, Stephens started writing a ‘Catalogue of British Animals,’ in his spare time. This led to further work describing species of birds and insects in volumes nine to fourteen of the series ‘General Zoology’ an extensive catalogue of wildlife begun by biologist Dr. George Shaw.

Despite his father’s hopes that his son’s work should be in the maritime arena, Stephens had by now realised that his future career did not lie at the Admiralty or as captain of a ship. In 1815, J.F. Stephens was made a member of the National Zoological Society of London. Then in 1818, the trustees of the British Museum asked the Admiralty to grant him leave to come to work for them full-time. He was needed to help Dr Elford Leach arrange the insect collection.

Stephens particular interest remained with the insects of the British Isles and he was determined that his next book would be a list of all known species, listed in their scientific classifications. This was an ambitious undertaking – not only did it involve writing up descriptions, and notes on habits and habitats of thousands of creatures including beetles, butterflies and flies, it meant examining the museum’s own collection and going on collecting exhibitions to ensure that every creature was indeed covered by the book. The work took until 1829 to complete and upon finishing it, Stephens

returned to his post at the Admiralty. In the meantime, in 1822, Stephens had

got married to the daughter of famous Shoreham sea captain, Captain Roberts. Sadly though all their children died young. Stephens’ next work ‘Illustrations of British Entomology’ was again a guide to insects, this time a pictorial one in ten volumes. It was not completed until 1846, and was beautifully illustrated by pictures coloured by hand, from drawings by C.M. Curtis and Stephens’ close friend John Obadiah Westwood.

Unfortunately, ‘Illustrations of British Entomology’ was seen by naturalist John Curtis as a rival to his own work, ‘British Entomology’. The two men became involved acrimonious dispute which split the insect-

studying fraternity for over thirty years. They were never reconciled despite John Obadiah Westwood’s attempt to end the quarrel. In 1832 Stephens took proceedings to protect his copyright against another author, James Rennie, whose book ‘Conspectus of British Butterflies and Moths’ replicated much of the information in Stephens’ own volume on butterflies. Stephens lost the case and it proved costly, but the support of the scientific community was with him and they raised money towards his legal expenses.

Meanwhile, a student at the University of Cambridge, one Charles Darwin, had become an enthusiastic insect collector. He sent Stephens records of the rarer insects he had caught and Stephens credited Darwin’s research in his volumes. In later years, Darwin, by then the most famous naturalist of all time, remarked in his autobiography "No poet ever felt more delight at seeing his first poem published than I did at seeing in Stephen's Illustrations of British Insects the magic words, 'captured by C. Darwin, Esq.”

James Francis Stephens retired from the Admiralty in 1845, but continued to work collecting and cataloguing butterflies for the British Museum. He died at Kennington in South London on December 22nd 1852, leaving a legacy of work that is still of importance to naturalists today.

i hope you had a heart warming December that has been satisfying and restful. As we go into January we can think about

the year ahead of us and it is often a good time to make new plans and decisions about what we want from life. Sometimes our energy and mood can need a bit of help after the rest period of Christmas and the colder weather. Here are some ways you can use oils to bring about clear thinking, boost energy and motivation, plus help lift any depression and anxiety.

I would recommend purchasing an oil burner if you don’t already have one as they are a really effective way to evaporate oils into a room, to change the atmosphere and affect your mood. Add the water to the burner first and let it heat a little before adding the oils, so you get the most evaporation from them. Be careful to keep your burner topped up with water otherwise it could burn dry. Oil burners with a large and deep dish are best and can be purchased at a reasonable price between £3-£10. You can also add a few drops of any oil to a tissue and lay over a radiator to gently warm and scent the room, but do not place over an electric heater as these oils are flammable!

For mornings when you need uplifting and for increased mental energy you can use Grapefruit and Rosemary (do not use Rosemary if you suffer with epilepsy). To give you vigour and clear any frustration, you can add a few drops of each oil into the shower tray for an invigorating blast as the water hits the oils and they evaporate. Peppermint and Lemon will also promote mental clarity and smooth your way. These oils are great to use whilst working through any paper work that you need to do. Add three drops of lemon and peppermint to your burner and top up as needed.

You can always use essential oils to refresh a room and leave a heavenly fragrance by mixing with salt or bicarbonate of soda, using geranium, lavender and lemon oils. In a plastic bag or bowl mix five drops of each, stir with a few tablespoons of the salt/bicarb then sprinkle evenly over your carpet, leave for at least half an hour then Vacuum. This will leave delicious scent behind and freshen the room.

For when you need quiet time and relaxation use Sandalwood and frankincense oils. Blend one drop of each into a tablespoon of oil such as sunflower, almond or olive oil and massage into your neck and shoulders, releasing any tension – or add the oil blend to a bath. These oils have a calming effect and help with meditation,

whilst having a grounding and comforting influence, helping you towards a peaceful mind.

Wishing you a very happy and aromatic New Year! For details of workshops in Shoreham on essential oils, treatments or Essential Blends natural skincare email Sophie at [email protected] or call (01273) 462839.Next workshop Sunday 15th January: a sensory journey with essential oils,10am-4pm.
