President’s Message

It’s was a great feeling for our club to be so well represented in the North Central finals this season. Three out of four football and four out of six netball sides all competed and although we didn’t bring home the big prize Grand Final day I can say that the club is mighty proud of the effort and commitment shown by all players, coaches and sup-port staff to get there. Only in its second year our hockey is also gaining a strong and loyal following with the

inclusion of some new team members this year. With a couple of wins on the board for the women’s and

Under 13’s we are showing real potential with a finals appearance hopefully not be too far away. Well

done to Alli and her team for the work that they put into hockey each week.

On a league level, congratulations to Ryan O’Sullivan who took out Seniors Best and Fairest in his first year

with the club. Sully has been a great acquisition to the Tigers and our future ruckman from our junior

ranks can learn a lot from just watching him. Brody Weir and Connor Michael were awarded joint Runner

Up B&F for the Under 16’s. These two boys will make the step up into senior footy next year and I'm sure

that they will make just as much of an impact at senior level as they have shown in the juniors. On the

netball front Nakia Nunn took out the A Grade Best and Fairest after a stellar year as Goal Shooter. Tire-

less defender Claudia Cox won the 16A B&F and Brooke McClelland 16B Runner Up B&F. Well done all.

This year we have been busy off the field with our first major infrastructure project, the netball courts and

lighting upgrade being completed. Brilliant effort to all involved in getting this job ticked off but I would

particularly like to single out Chris Pearce for the work that he did with the lights. We are so lucky to have

tradesmen in our community that go above and beyond. Thanks Pearce Electrical! Next project in conjunc-

tion with Tyrrell College is the connection to the rural water pipeline and installation of a new watering

system to the Complex Oval. This will drastically reduce the annual water bill for the Complex and Tyrrell

College and in turn SLNT as a user body of both ovals. Other projects on the horizon are new lights for the

Complex Oval and an upgrade to our ‘non-compliant’ change room facilities.

To run a successful club there are many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I would like to

thank my Executive Committee with special mentions to Mick and Terry in their roles as Secretary and

Treasurer. To the whole SLNTFNHC committee representatives, Jacko as NCFL League Delegate, recruiting

managers, coaches, umpires, property stewards, game day volunteers, groundsmen and players across all

levels and codes. A massive thanks to our trainers to ensure their was first aid coverage of footy, netball

and hockey. Thanks to Deb Emonson who has big shoes to fill when she hands over the reins after 3 terms

as Netball President. To Selina, Melissa and Corinne for their roles on the Canteen/Ladies Auxiliary. To our

cooks at training and at home games and to Joyce and Anne for all that they do. Thank you to Tyrrell Col-

lege for the use of their oval for hockey. Our Social Committee who have excelled themselves with some

great functions this year and to all our club members, the Tiger Army, for your support and generosity.

Thanks to our farming contingent for their work and upkeep of the club crop with special thanks to O’Con-

nor’s Birchip for their assistance at cropping and harvest. Finally our sincere thanks to our generous and

loyal sponsors to whom we hope you

have had a mutual beneficial association

with the Tigers.

From the Netbal l President

This has been a historic year for us with the upgrade to the court, our first hosting of a final and our first league best and fairest winners and grand finalists. Congratulations to our 16A and A grade players on the way they repre-

sented us yesterday. You took it right up to Wedderburn and showed everyone why you should have been there. We didn’t get the shield but we certainly got the glory and I am so proud of every player’s effort. Thank you to the many people who came along, prepared the rooms, cooked and worked behind the bar last night to support the girls after their grand final loss yesterday. It was a great night after a tough day and helped soften the blow. As Nakia said last night we got a couple of premiernearlyaships. Well done to all our other teams that made the finals or repre-sented us this year. The future of our club is assured when l see the talent in our junior teams and how well we were able to regroup and rebuild our senior teams. Congratulations again to Nakia Nunn, Claudia Cox and Brooke McClelland all worthy league trophy winners. Well done to our league representatives, Jenna Conlan, Emily Weir, Isabella Shepherd, Heidi Simpson, Ash Roberts and Abby Walklate. Also to Heidi Simpson on her invitation to attend Northern Zone Academy try outs. Thank you to the many people who work so hard in all codes within our clubs both in full view but more importantly behind the scenes. To the many people who assisted in any way to help create our new court area - at working bees, preparing documents, attending meetings or anything else I have forgotten a massive thank you. l believe that the strength of a combined club was very evident during the whole court upgrade process. To the many volunteers we had assisting us put our teams on the court, parents, friends and players - the taxi services for training and games, scorers , umpires , PCs , flippers, our won-derful trainers ( we were the envy of many with the support we had over the finals) and people who helped with catering, court preparation and working bees. No matter what little thing you did, I hope you know it was appreciated and helped us. To our coaches, all passionate volunteers, all faced with unen-viable decisions made even more difficult due to the healthy number of players that we have in our club. I hope that I have supported you along the process and I thank you for taking on this vital but thankless job. I googled volunteer and it was a person who freely offers to undertake a task to benefit another person, group or organization".[ This perfectly sums up all our coaches, so thank you , Tammy (Shauna, Keniesha and Teale) for Net Set Go, Rene and Tarsh for the 13A & Bs , Nakia for the 16 B , Sandra and Lana for the 16 A , Sam for the C grade and Jodi, Ash and Abby for the A & B along with Tiarnee before Tex decided to play hard ball.

I hope after a good break that you will consider taking on these roles again in 2018 as you have so much to offer our girls and have all done an amazing job. Thank you to our club committee for their continued support, congratulations to all the other club trophy winners, the foot-ball finalists teams and to the hockey on their wins throughout the year, finals will come in the not too distant future I am sure. l apologise if I have left anyone out, so in case I did - Thank you!! This is my last speech to you as president of our netball body – thank god I hear a few murmur or maybe that’s just Trevor and Bethany, I think I have had my finger in the pie for long enough and it is time for someone else to take over and put their bent on our club. It’s time for the next generation to step up and take the reigns. Like the football committee, all executive positions will be va-cant in the netball for 2018 so this will give someone a chance to step forward and take control. Don’t be scared, have a go there are so many people around that will support and assist you and really so much just happens. We are a well-oiled ma-chine in many ways and there are always people around to call on and confer with. I sincerely thank Jo and Fiona for their support and teamwork over the last two years. I think we made a good team, each of us having strengths that blended together and trust and confi-dence in each other to get the job done. At times we probably agreed to disagree but this was probably a rarity. Lastly before l finish I want to get on my soapbox one last time. We are all very proud of what our club has but we need to en-sure that we don’t take this for granted and continue to work towards maintaining the strong club ethos we have. It doesn’t just happen. As I look around I see many tired volunteers so my parting challenge to each and every one of you is what are you going to do next year to ensure that our club remains strong and viable. It doesn’t have to be a major thing, every little thing helps. You might push the chairs in on a Thursday night, cook a BBQ, put out or pick up some chairs at the netball, pick up some rubbish or line up the bins but DO something. Get behind the volunteers that lead and guide our club, sup-

port them physically, mentally and

socially as if we are to continue to

go forward and achieve the goals

we all aspire to for our players and

teams we need to work together

and share the load. Together we

can achieve more so let’s make

that Tiger roar and realise the

dream in 2018.

Deb Emonson

2017 - another leap of improvement for our Tigers hockey. This year saw us field all sides (quite comfortably on the most part), score goals, and also manage to gain a few spots on the ladder for a few teams. Some people may think... big deal, but to me it definitely is! In all grades we have started to be more offensive, our defensive skills definitely got a workout in 2016, but it shows we are slowly developing all aspects of the game - you know the saying - one step at a time. Our improvement is indicative of how we have wholeheartedly supported the inclusion of hockey as a club, shown that we have committed people to help with the development of our skills and inter-pretation of the game, proves we have kids (and also adults), that are excited to give something a go and will continue with a new sport, plus we have the best supporter base going round, and all these things are aspects to be happy about. Thank you to all of our coaches in 2017 - Kylie McKenzie, Chel-sea Hargreaves, Joe Collins, Tamara Paull and Damien Leo, these improvements definitely would not have happened without you and your hard work. Like all codes of sport within our club, there are plenty of jobs that also go on behind the scenes, thank you to all those peo-ple (you know who you are) that help with these to allow us all to play come every Saturday. Thank you to Tyrrell College as well for continuing to partner with the club to give us our hockey playing field. So what's next...2018 - in 2018 I hope that our skills and ex-pertise in the new sport grow again, our junior sides continue to develop, we continue to nurture an encouraging and ex-citing environment to which sport can be played, still have the best cheer squads come Saturday, and foster a stronger com-munity of hockey advocates and Tiger supporters! All of these things are achievable, with help from each and every one of us, so let's make 2018 a great year - a hockey meeting will be held just before the club AGM to start us in the right direction for 2018 - so it would be great to have you there - for your support, to volunteer to help with a committee role, or just to come to see what gets done throughout the year and to feel confident to offer support later in the season. Thank you for another successful (in my eyes) season of hock-ey. Bring on a competitive and confident season come 2018!

Net, Set Go. Thanks to Tammy Tait, Shauna Cox, Keniesha Ryan and Teale Mott who supervised and guided our Net, Set Go girls, the fu-ture of our club. It is vital that these girls gain a love for the game and enjoy being part of our club as they are our teams of the future and without them we won’t have a club. 13A Rene Griffiths and Tarsh Hickey took on the task of guiding our 13 A and B girls throughout the season, which was a juggling act with hockey, illnesses and injuries. These girls came on in leaps and bounds having not played in an official competition before and will be force to reckon with in the future, The expe-rience the younger players received will stand them in good stead for next year as they take on the leadership role in the 13As. This team finished fifth for the season. It was decided at club level that there would be no votes given for any Under 13 teams but awards could be given by coaches to players who played in official Under 13 competitions. All players who played 13 A during the year were considered for all awards. The coaches selected the most improved and an outside committee selected the most consistent at the coach’s request as they both had daughters involved. Most Improved – Charlee Hewlett Most Consistent – Keely Griffiths 16 B With a massive group of 14 girls coach Nakia Nunn did a ster-ling job to make sure every player received court time and im-proved their skills as well as have the team make the Prelimi-nary final. What an honour for these girls to be coached by the A grade League Bets and Fairest. Special mention to Brooke McClelland who was equal runner up in the league. Brooke played games in the 16 A as well as 16 b. All netball votes are given by the umpires, with both umpires conferring before a decision is made. Best and Fairest – Emily Weir Runner Up – Isabella Shepherd Coach’s Award – Hannah Cox 16 A Lana Durie and Sandra Mott were in charge of our 16A team who will forever be known as the first Tiger team to make a North Central Grand Final, no matter what the result. If anyone saw the match you would have been so proud of these girls and their efforts. It was a very emotional day and we all know how much they wanted victory and how hard they battled for it, however it wasn’t to be and they went down 28 to 25 to Wedderburn. Spectators spoke about the quality of the match. This team was a mixture of girls from last year’s 13A, 16B and 16A sides so congratulations to Lana and Sandra on blending them into an awesome unit. Players had to adapt to new team mates and positions and did so with ease. Congratulations to Claudia Cox, the North Central Netball Association best and fairest.

Best and Fairest – Claudia Cox Runner Up – Jenna Conlan Most Improved (Coaches Award) – Maya Arentz C Grade: Sam Wight took on the C grade coaching position after return-ing to our club. This grade is always a mammoth job as you have to find space on the court for all those players who don’t fit into the A or B grade and the B grade are always pinching players when they are short. She worked well with the team and asked them how they wished to share positions. It took a little while with many new faces to settle and rotations were common place. This team were unlucky to miss the finals by only 4%, having pushed many of the sides in the four. Best and Fairest – Jenae Notting Runner Up – Chevaun Wight Coaches Award – Simone Dawes A & B Grade Abby Walklate, Ash Roberts and Jodi Cox coached the A and B grade teams. Tiarnee Nunn started off also assisting with the B grade but unfortunately had to give this up during the season. These girls pushed the girls and experimented with many different combination before settling for the final teams which both ended up second on the ladder. The B grader made it to the Preliminary Final, losing to Donald by 4 and the A grade played off in the Grand Final going down to Wedderburn by 5 in what many have said was one of the best A grade finals in the North Central for many years. This was an amazing effort with so many news faces and com-binations and looks to a bright future ahead, especially with the influx of many junior girls. Playing in a grand final had made all the girls hungry for victory and to get that flag. Congratulations to Nakia Nunn on winning the North Central Netball Association A Grade best and fairest, truly the epitome of a best and fairest winner. B Grade: Best and Fairest – Anna Coote Runner Up – Shaniah Nunn Coaches Award – Bethany Emonson A Grade: Best and Fairest – Nakia Nunn Runner Up – Ash Roberts Coaches Award – Asela Finch Paula Sutton Award: Nakia Nunn presented the Paula Sutton Memorial Award which is an award given to recognise a junior player who does many of the little things around the club without being asked and not seeking recognition that may go unnoticed but are important for the successful running of the club. Paula was an unassuming girl who just quietly went about be-ing a club member, she enjoyed being part of a team and cele-brated the successes but also was upbeat when things were not as good on the court. She was not a star netballer but gave her all and got the best out of herself and her ability. The worthy recipient of this award was Shauna Cox.

I'm up here to have a chat about one of the absolute legends of our club who, on face value, no pun intended, looks like he has retired from football, after a lifetime dedicated to this great club. I'm a bit wary about retirement speeches after last year, isn't that right Col. But it looks like this might be it, play-ing wise anyway, for our mate Phil, particularly if Nola has any-thing to do with it! When I talk about a lifetime dedicated to the club, I'm not just talking about turning up to play each week for the 40years of Philso so far. That in itself would be an outstanding effort and something that to be proud of and admired. But I'm talking about something far greater than that with Philso. With well over 400 club senior and reserves game, Philso is in a group of extraordinary players that have been resilient enough to play into their 40's. The names that come to my mind around here that have achieved this fete include TC, Col and Griz-zle, so Phil is certainly in good company there. But there is something that sets Phil apart from any player I've ever played with, and no, it's not the 2 handed drop. It is the abso-lute commitment and drive to be part of a successful club, which cannot be measured by games, but rather some of the roles he has played over the years. He has coached every grade of foot-ball, coaching many premier-ships along the way which you will see shortly. If you added up all the games Phil has coached you'd be adding a couple of hundred more to the tally without a doubt. His ability to inspire others to be their best is some-thing you can pick just from listening to one of his speeches, with many commenting on Phils ability to get the hairs stand-ing up on the back their neck, something that Phil has not been able to experience himself. He understands people like no oth-er and that is why he has had so much success in his coaching, getting people to the club, and keeping people here. Phil's

efforts, both as a coach and a player, have absolutely contrib-uted to such a positive culture that exists at our club. Phil's sense of fun has also been a highlight and of great value to the club, running the social club for many years and organis-ing countless footy trip. He's been a committee member for countless years, and a dedicated worker. When he first started dating Carla, she couldn't believe how dedicated he was- he'd be at the complex for a working bee every second Sunday!!!

I feel ill placed to talk to much about Phil's footy prior to 2003 which was the first year Berri Culgoa and Sea Lake Nandaly merged. How-ever, we've just played our 15th season as a merged club so I think I've seen enough. Kids, if you want to learn about what it takes to be the best that you can be, take some notes from the book of Phil. He won't be able to teach you to be a league best and fairest ruckman like Big Sul (although he might take credit for it as his coach this year), he might not be able to teach you to guide the ball down and kick goals like Rentzy, or get a fist to the ball like Lukey. But he will teach you about grit, deter-mination, loyalty, respect, humility, passion, resilience and commitment. These val-ues are things that you can control and what make you successful. Some have all the ability in the world and lack

these values and they never achieve. Philso has each and every one of these values running through his veins which is exactly why I'm standing up here acknowledging him for over 400 club games today and celebrating his football career. Philso, on behalf of the club, here is another jumper framed up for the Pool Room! You are an absolute legend of a bloke and our club and we want to thank you for your massive contribu-tions!!!

We honour Phil Cox by Joey Summerhayes
