Dear Members,

WOW! November is here. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving and all the trimmings.

We are through half of the D.D. visits. Our visit was in the first half, and a good job was done by all.

Lodge 81 held an extra breakfast buffet and hosted an October fest German buffet that raised $2,500 for our fu-ture Grand Exalted Ruler Dave Carr.

I cannot thank Sue Canavan and her team of volun-teers enough for the wonderful October fest meal she planned. Keith Knoop was Sue’s right hand man for the cooking along with many other kitchen helpers. I know

Nancy Corbett had a hand in fixing the desserts, she also had many others help-ing. On the floor you could see Betty Lange, Gail Simione and many others helping. There is not enough room to put everyone’s name in this letter but, please be aware that I know you volunteered and helped to make the October fest a great success, THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

The Old Timers’ night was a great success with about 30 old timers in attendance. Pat Greene prepared a nice ham dinner that was enjoyed by all.

Our State President, Michael Bloss visited our Lodge on October 8th, we had breakfast together. Whitehall lodge hosted a dinner for him on the 9th with all the dignitaries in attendance.

sCholArshIP news

Time is of the Essence…. Only four weeks remain to apply for the Most Valu-

able Student Scholarship Contest! MVS applications are due at the Lodge on or before December 1, 2010. Legacy Awards applications, scholarships for the children and grandchildren of Elks, must be completed online and are due February 1, 2011. If you know a high school senior, let them know now, so they don’t miss out on Elks scholarship opportunities.

In Addition to ENF Awards and scholarships, the New York State Elks Association gives out $1,000 scholarships to seniors in High School or College students through the Junior Year (not open to seniors in College), who are a son/stepson or daughter/stepdaughter of Elk member in good standing.

The application is identical to the ENF application except for the front page. I suggest the ENF application be downloaded by them. Have him/her fill out the application from their own PC, however replace the cover page with the cover page for the New York State Elks Association Scholar-ship Award, which is available from me or see Joy in the busi-ness office.

The completed application needs to be in my hands on or before 3:00pm on December 1, 2010.

Dick Burch Scholarship Committee Chair

veTerAns CornerOur next meeting to the Stratton VA Hospital to serve ice

cream and popcorn will be Saturday, December 11th. A sign up sheet will be in the “Elk of the Day Book” during the last week of November. Your continued contributions of books, CDs, and DVD’s for distribution to our veterans is encouraged and appreciated. We also appreciated the cell phone dona-tions which are used to obtain telephone calling cards that are donated to soldiers in zones of conflict, allowing them to call “home.”

Veterans Day is approaching (November 11th). The nation and especially our lodge honors and salutes our Veterans for their service. God Bless all of you.

Kyle Patrick Barber Master State Trooper Scholarship Fund

Mission Statement:To award seniors from QueensburyHigh who demonstrate the qualities,

the drive and the dedication Kyleexemplified in his life.

Who Master Trooper Kyle Was ...

Trooper Kyle P. Barber grew up in Queensbury, NY where he graduated in 1980. He moved to Texas to attend DeVry Institute, met his wife, who was originally from South Glens Falls. They moved back to this area for a year then relocated to North Carolina.

Kyle P. Barber served as a trooper for the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Troop F, District 2 Patrol Office in Wil-kesboro North Carolina from January 1985 until his untimely death on May 19, 2009; 24 Years of dedicated service. He is survived by his wife, three children, his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters and their families.

Kyle P. Barber was a member of the Wilkes Telephone Board of Directors, was a member of the Shepherds Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors, and coached girl’s soccer at East Wilkes High School;

Kyle P. Barber was a leading citizen, an outstanding law enforcement officer and was always dedicated to the welfare of the citizens of Wilkes County and sincerely committed to the fundamental principles of good government.

As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich.

Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened.

Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace...

The Giving Tree

at Lodge 81Help us make another child's

Christmas a happy one.

It is as easy as 1-2-3.1. You come into the lodge and take a tag (as

many as you want to buy) off the tree. (each tag has something a child wanted or clothing size on it.)

2. Go shopping for the gifts. Wrap up the gift and put the tag from the tree on the gift. (We recommend gift receipts for clothing)

3. Bring the gift back to the lodge with the tag on it an put it under the tree..

The tags tell Santa's helpers which families get which gifts. Thank You for helping to make someone else's Christmas merry and bright.
