STUDENT
SPOTLIGHT
TRIO Access Day
Upward Bound hosted an Immigration Simulation presented by Kelsey Herbert on April 19th. 28 students participated in
an active discussion identifying issues in the U.S. immigration system. Students then played the roles of immigrants from
all over the world and learned about many of the risks, hardships, and expenses involved in order to become a legal U.S.
citizen.
A total of 13 Upward Bound students participated in the Baxter Community Center’s Fix-Up Day. The
event took place on April 22nd alongside staff, neighbors, and friends of Baxter that came together for a day
of hard work, laughter and community. The students joined hands to accomplish a variety of projects inside
and outside the Baxter Community Center building.
Mrs. Chappell and 11 female Upward Bound students attended the first ever Girls of Color Summit hosted by GVSU's
Women's Center on April 15th. Students attended sessions on feminism, media representation of women of color, and self
care. Phenomenal women of color speakers who provided inspiration them to be advocates for social justice, to love yourself,
and to empower other girls.
