Father Joe’s Morning Ride: Birthing the Spirit

Advent is a truly blessed time of the Liturgical Year for me...the anticipation, prep-aration, planning for the birthing of the Blessed One... truly take on a sacred character. In our house, we recently got to live the birthing process up close and personally. Just eight weeks ago, my daughter gave birth to our first grandson...Lyrick Em-manuel, and I got to be very close to all of the transitional stages that get packed into those 40 short weeks: the jubilation of the news of new birth; the realization that lives will be changed forever by the news; the nesting; the hoping everything will be ok; the prayers for a healthy child; the anticipation of a new future; the graceful crafting of the little one by Nature and The Creator; the planning the nursery as sacred space; Diapers...food...clothing...shelter all decisions and plans checked off one by one. A plan is crafted and we simply work the plan. Or not.... Most often, things change, constants become variables. We are faced with more unknowns than knowns. Often we can feel out of control, that we are simply holding on to a timeless process that has both a mind and a schedule of its own. It is hard to simply sit back and watch the Miracle unfold in front of us. And that is what I like best about Advent. As much as I anticipate, prepare and plan, the re-birthing of the Sacred Spirit of the Christ Child always has a mind and schedule of its own. There is always a new discovery, a new twist, a new way to see the story. I am always amazed but never surprised. So now we begin to prepare our hearts and our Spirits for the birthing of the Sacred Spirit with us. This Advent, we nest, we prepare, we longingly wait. We do the birthing work that needs to be done to prepare...and let the Baby will do the rest. Blessings, And Enjoy the Ride Father Joe

From the Senior Warden

Dear Friends, As 2016 winds to an end our church and home calendars are full of activities and commitments. Many suffer during the holidays, we overeat, and overspend. Some are joyful, others suffer depression. We miss those who have gone before us. Growing up my father used this time of year to prepare our family for the coming joy of the Christ child’s birth. We were thankful at Thanksgiving and we did over-eat, but after our descriptions of that thanks was always a Bible verse. We were to be thankful to the Lord. Period! My father did not dwell or preach, he directed. I try to remember his habits when I am overwhelmed. So this time of year my Bi-ble is closer, my thoughts go to my father and the many good habits he tried to in-still. This is perhaps my Epiphany story. Then I think of my mother, a quiet Quaker, who went every Sunday to Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church with her husband and daughters. She never quoted the Bible, but would give her daughters missives, quotes and cards. My favorite: Open your soul to wonder and goodness. Open your world to unique points of view. Open your mind to a beautiful future. Open your heart to dreams coming true. Author unknown So this time of year, I give thanks to Bob and Shirley Barnes, my parents. The Lord blessed me greatly. My wish for you all is wonderful memories, health , and happiness now and in the future. Vicki
