  • PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Now that the major part of winter is behind us and the days are getting longer, we can begin to think of all things spring. That means the snow will be melting, the snowbirds will be returning, the colour of blue and green will replace the winter scenes and business opportunities will be blooming.

Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is stronger than ever as we head into the peak season for business in the Kawarthas. I have the honour of being your President for 2015 and I am so pleased that we

have a strong board of directors in place to support the goals and needs of our organization as we move forward. You can read about them beginning on page 9, and I wish to extend my personal thanks to both the new and returning board members. We also had some retirements from the board this year,

and while that’s expected, it always tough to say good-bye to those folks who have dedicated their time and expertise to the success of our Chamber.

Committee work at the Chamber is also extremely important and I would like to acknowledge and thank all of those people who volunteer in these roles. It’s very much appreciated and very helpful in achieving our overall goals as a Chamber.

I should emphasize that we couldn’t do what we do without the strength and leadership of our seasoned General Manager, Sherry Boyce-Found. We rely on her to lead the day to day operations and to deliver

member satisfaction. You can almost always find her at the Chamber office and she typically has an answer for any questions you might have.

If you are a member now, or thinking about becoming a member, or know someone who would benefit from all we offer - give the office a call, Sherry or one of our friendly staff will be there to help.

It’s exciting that our new Brand is building momentum in the Region. Check out the website for the new look. “A Wealth of Choice” sends a strong message and represents us well! It’s really who we are and stands for what our region offers:

    Opportunities & Options

    Communities that Connect

    Adventure & Atmosphere

So, with all that said and Spring on its way, let me encourage you to step

out of the “social media” box (which does work pretty well for lots of things BTW) and attend an event in person. You can always “Tweet” about it during or after to let others know you met our Board, or met other members at Business After Hours, the Volunteer Breakfast meeting in April, and our Golf Tournament in May. These events provide an excellent opportunity to get to know us better, share your ideas, network with other Chamber members and build your business.

I look forward to seeing you!

    Kris

  • The Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan is presently doing a soft launch of their new eClaims service. It’s expected to be available to all insured firms in April 2015 after it’s confirmed that the new utility is working as anticipated.

Plan participants will soon be able to save time and paper by submitting their Health and Dental Claims online through www.my-benefits.ca for this new eClaims service. Prescription drug claims will continue to be processed at your pharmacy using your drug cards. Travel health claims will continue to be handled through Voyage Assistance by telephone for out-of-country/province hospital bills and traditional paper forms will continue to be used for minor travel medical bills.

Insured employees and business owners who are enrolled on my-benefits.ca will find a Submit Claims tab in the menu, allowing electronic submissions for paramedical health claims such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage and other typical paper claims. This service can also be used for dental claims if for some reason your dentist doesn’t file a claim.

Insureds will need to be signed up for direct deposit of claim payments, so users not already signed up will be prompted towards the Direct Deposit tab to provide their banking information.

Claims can be submitted in 6 simple steps:

Read and agree to the “Terms and

    Conditions”

Select the patient who used the

    services

    Select the service or product

    supplied (the type of claim)

    Select a provider (dentist,

    chiropractor, optician, etc.)

Enter the service date and amount

charged by the provider, and attach an electronic copy of the original receipt or an Explanation of Benefits statement from any plan that has already paid a portion of the expense.

    Read and agree to the

“Authorization” and indicate if the claim should be paid to the insured or the servicer provider.

Insureds will receive an email notice when their Explanation of Benefits has been prepared. The status of claims can be viewed at anytime, under the Claims History tab.

To protect the Plan from fraud and misuse, claims submitted using my-benefits.ca eClaims will be subject

to random audits and verification. Insureds will be required to retain all original documents for 12 months from the date of submission, for

presentation, should a claim be selected for audit.

My own small firm has been insured with the Chambers Plan for our group benefits since 1996 and every year positive additions and changes are made to this insurance program based on the requests and needs of the insured firms. They never fail to impress me each and every year.

If you wish to know more about the many benefits of the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan, please call Brian, The Life Insurance Guy at 705.741.1400. You can also view chamberplan.ca

Currently, I work with RBC as a Commercial Account Manager specializing in the business professionals, business services and retail franchise markets. My experience with RBC extends to the areas of Sales, Sales Management, Marketing & Development as well as Training and Audit. My career brought me to Peterborough in 1994 and in 2009 I moved back to Lakefield and

    CHRIS WILSON 1st Vice-President

    Let’s Get Digital

    letsgetdigital.ca

I have worked primarily in public service and self employment. I have gained much experience over the years in running small businesses, and in the challenges that are presented to both new and existing businesses. I started Let's Get Digital, part-time, about 15 years ago. As the business grew to a full time operation, I passed the reins to David. I now have a more supporting role. I have previously worked with all three levels of government and sat on numerous boards. I have been trained and worked in governance, management, oversight, public policy and community service. I also bring a strong technical background with me. I look forward to continuing my work with the Board and membership.

KATHY NEWTON 2nd Vice-President Eastview Property Management eastviewpropertymanagement.ca

Terry and Kathy started Eastview Property Management Inc in 2011, after building their own home and permanently relocating to Ennismore in 2005 from Newmarket, Ontario. Terry is a licensed automotive technician and Kathy is a Certified Professional Accountant. Together they manage Eastview Property which continues to grow and over the past year have hired three new

employees to assist them with serving

their established and new customers. They are members of both the Kawartha Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and Buckhorn District Tourist Association.

Kathy and Terry love the Kawarthas and their community and want to contribute to the on-going economic development while maintaining the wonderful culture and quality of living.

JOHN PENNY Secretary-Treasurer JC Penny Accounting & Tax Services

I was born in Brantford, Ontario and spent most of my life in the York Region area north of Toronto. I studied Accounting at Seneca College and have lived in the Lakefield area for 7 years. I have a Certified Bookkeeper designation from the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping. I operated Bucky's Books & Things in Buckhorn for 7 seasons with my wife Candy. I worked for local accounting firms until December 2012 when I opened my own business, JC Penny Accounting and Tax Services at the Creekside Plaza just south of Lakefield.

HEATHER SADLER Past-President EcoVue Consulting Services Inc. ecovueconsulting.com

Heather is the Principal & Sr. Planner with EcoVue Consulting Services Inc. Her firm provides professional planning advice to small and large developers, private individuals and municipalities. KEVIN DYCK Kingdon Timber Mart kingdontruss.com

I have been in the building materials industry my whole life. I started working in the yard at Kingdon Timber Mart as cleanup crew, customer service and deliveries. I then went to the truss plant where I built roof and floor trusses. I also spent some time as a roof truss designer. Then I took a break from the building industry for a few years while I went to university in B.C. After graduating, I returned to the world of building materials, as the Marketing Manager at Kingdon Timber Mart. I am currently in my 4th year in this capacity.

It will be a pleasure to help spread that message.
