Demonstration by Bruce Williams: Fluting a Turning
Bruce demonstrated his custom set-up for fluting a turned bowl. He was not
able to demonstrate the fluting because each set-up is customized to the par-
ticular lathe.
Requirements:
A custom platform that mounts in the banjo. This acts as the tool rest for flut-
ing.
A tool to flute the piece: a Dremel, Proxxon, mini-router, compressed air tool
or equivalent
A custom-built jig adapted to hold the tool being used to flute the piece
If not indexing with the lathe’s capabilities:
An indexing wheel – one source is Iron Fire Innovations: http://ironfirellc.com/
A custom-made indexing board that sits on the bed of the lathe to lock the indexing wheel in place
with a pin
Sanding discs to make the flutes – at least 2 grits, 150 being the finest needed. One source is Klingspor’s
Woodworking Shop: http://www.woodworkingshop.com/
Sandpaper for finishing
Pencil for marking flutes before starting
Bruce’s Robust lathe has 48 indexing positions, so he can easily
use the lathe to make 24 or 48 flutes around a turned piece
without using an indexing wheel, depending on the piece’s over-
all size.
Custom-Built Parts: Bruce made his platform out of MDF faced on one side with mica (e.g. Formica,
etc.). The mica side becomes the top of the platform. He attached threaded pipe and a nipple to the un-
finished side to allow mounting it as a tool rest. He made an open-ended, open-top box out of the same
material with the mica side on the bottom to hold the fluting tool with a hole in the front for the bit to go
through. The mica bottom slides easily along the mica top of the platform. For indexing with a wheel, he
made an indexing board out of scrap wood to help lock the indexing wheel in place for each flute.
Setting Up for Fluting: The platform has to be set in the banjo so when the tool holder is placed on top
of it, the cutting tool’s center is parallel horizontally with the turning axis
of the lathe. For straight flutes, the platform must be absolutely level. Tilt-
ing the platform will result in curved flutes. If using an indexing wheel,
mount to the lathe behind a chuck, set the indexing board on the bed of
the lathe and lock the wheel in place with a pin. For the next flute, turn the
wheel is turned and lock it into the next position. If you set up a platform
that tilts, you could do curved flutes.
Fluting: Prior to fluting, Bruce draws a pencil line for each flute so he can
compensate if some flutes are a bit off. Use the lathe’s indexing or the in-
dex wheel to mark the flutes. Starting with the coarsest grit, do each flute
all the way around with that grit, progressing to the next grit. Gradually
deepen the flute, don’t try to go to full depth all at once. As each flute is
done with the current grit, rotate to the next index location and do that flute. If using an indexing wheel,
you’ll have to rotate it to the next index hole and re-pin it using the indexing board. Follow with hand-
sanding after all flutes have been finished with the finest grit.
Finishing: Bruce uses a vacuum chuck to finish turning the bottom of the bowl. You can use either spray
lacquer or spray polyurethane as a finish. ______________________
