Welcome back and good luck to everybody for
Term 4. We hope that all students, families and
staff were able to re-charge their batteries and
prepare for another hard working term.
Term 4 means that all students must have a
School hat when outside. The school policy
states that from September to April, ‘no hat, no play’.
The hat must be our wide-brimmed, navy
blue school hat with the logo. Hats are available to purchase through the school
and cost $12.
Thank you to
all of our
students who
participated in
the AFL
Footy
‘Dress Up
Day’ on the
last day of
Term 3.
We raised
about $200 for
the Fight
Cancer
Foundation.
The Essendon
team had the
most
supporters!
Not many
West Coast
supporters
though!
Bradley Kitchin and Olive Clark
have been wearing their hats since
the 1st of September.

who are all having birthdays
this week.
On behalf of the

School Community, we
wish them all a very Happy

Walk to School: October is “walk to school” month!
Teachers are counting active travel every day of this
month so children are being encouraged to adopt this as
part of their daily routine. Our school has already
received a $150 voucher through the Mitchell shire for
their participation.
Veterans’ Health Week: This Thursday (11th October)
we are celebrating Veterans’ Health Week with a
Maths/Science night. The evening will begin at 6pm
with free healthy hamburgers for families to enjoy.
This is an initiative of the Australian Government
Department of Veterans’ Affairs and we thank them for
supporting our event.
Thank you to the school community for my welcome as
I fill Mrs Ranger’s role for Term 4. If you have a
parental absence or concern, and would like me to check
in on your child, please feel free to send me an email

families to come to the Puckapunyal
Primary School Family Fun Day!
This is an invitation to all parents of pre-school and
primary school children and other members of the
community. It is going to be a great day! We ask our
parents to try to get some time off work to attend.
The day will begin at 1:00p.m. with a picnic lunch,
followed by outside family activities, the Art Show
and then the Colours Fun Run. It will be great fun!
**More about the Colour Fun Run on page 13. **
Good Luck to the 25 students who will be representing
the Seymour District and our school at the Division
Athletics Carnival tomorrow. The bus leaves at 8am
tomorrow. We will report how they went next week.
Win-some, lose-some: Using compromise to resolve conflict
Adults have a significant impact on how children deal with conflict. Often adults encourage children to deal with
conflict by compromising. Compromising means that no one wins or loses outright. Each person gets some of what
they want and gives up some of what they want. Many children learn how to compromise as they grow and find ways to
negotiate friendships. It is common around the middle of primary school for children to become very concerned with
fairness and with rules as a way of ensuring fairness. This may correspond with an approach to resolving conflict that is
based on compromise.
Win-win: Using cooperation to resolve conflict
Using a win-win approach means finding out more about the problem and looking together for creative solutions so that
everyone can get what they want.
See next week’s newsletter for part 5 of Conflict Resolution: “Skills required for effective conflict resolution”. Source:

Teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating ‘Tolerance and Compassion’ to be eligible for the Student of
the Week award. We encourage parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.
What is Tolerance and Compassion? At assembly this week, Year 6 student Emily Watson read out the meaning of
Tolerance and Compassion.
‘Tolerance is accepting things that you can’t change or things that you wish were different. Tolerance is practised
when you accept things about people that you don’t like. A friend may have an annoying habit that irritates you or a
family member may do things that annoy you. You tolerate these things because you care for those people.
Compassion is caring about someone who is hurt: physically, emotionally or psychologically. It’s being kind and
understanding because the other person matters to you.
Compassion is forgiving someone who has hurt you. It’s caring deeply and wanting to help even if you do not know
that person.’
The School Canteen is open for Lunch Orders this
Friday. Each and every Friday students can order lunches
from the school canteen. The menu will be different each
week. Please ensure that a paper bag comes with the order.
Please indicate on the lunch bag if the money is in another
sibling’s bag (please see Term 4 menu and tips on page 8).
This week the menu is - Hot dogs $3.00 each
Chocolate/Strawberry Milk $2.00 each
Apple/Orange Juice Popper $1.50 each
No charge for tomato sauce

**REMINDER- Pucka News is a growing interest
in the school and our community. You can see each
episode live at our school assemblies at 9am on
Monday mornings. Everyone is encouraged to
come along and watch each episode. If you are
unable to attend, you can follow Pucka News by
watching each episode on our Facebook page. **
***Have you heard your child read today? We
encourage all students to practise their reading at
home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now,
most students should have read at least between 155-
160 nights. Well done if you have kept up!
Monday 5th November is our next
Pupil Free Day. Therefore, students are
not expected at school that day.
It is a Planning Day for staff. It gives all
teachers the opportunity to work on the
Victorian Curriculum planners for 2019.
Tuesday 6th November is
Melbourne Cup Day and therefore a
public holiday. Students are not expected at
school that day either.
Friday 16th November is also Pupil
Free Day. Therefore, students are not
expected at school that day.
It is a Report Writing Day for
teachers.

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and
satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing schools,
beginning school for the first time and even returning for another
school year can be daunting for students and parents. It is great to see
parents eager to support their children at this time and be an integral
part of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel like a
chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career assistance program
if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive that includes
shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some parents have been waiting
on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table
when discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at
home, etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that
schools are very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means,
we can plan to cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 6 & 8 Literacy: We are writing short sentences and working on the vowel sound ‘a’.
Numeracy: We are working on modelling subtraction in practical situations, as well as informal forms of
measurement.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 4 & 10
Literacy: .We are focusing on procedures and practising correct letter formation of all letters, as well as adverbs. We
are continuing to improve our knowledge of the 100 most used words.
Numeracy: We are ordering and modelling numbers beyond 100, counting to and from 100 using a number line, and
continuing to work on addition and subtraction.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 3, 4 & 9 Literacy: We are focusing on procedures and practising correct letter formation of all letters, as well as adverbs. We
are continuing to improve our knowledge of the 100 most used words. We are continuing to improve our editing skills
in our writing.
Numeracy: We are ordering and modelling numbers to at least 100, counting to and from 100 using a number line,
and continuing to work on addition and subtraction, and the relation between them.
Middle School Years 3/4 Rooms 9, 11, 12 & 13 Literacy: Over the next two weeks in Literacy we will be focusing on recounts in Writing and a variety of reading
strategies during reading sessions.
Numeracy: We will also be working on the four processes, BODMAS, fractions and reading timetables in Numeracy.
Senior School Years 5/6 Rooms 1 & 2 Literacy: Over the next two weeks in Literacy we will be focusing on editing and publishing in Writing and comparing
and contrasting in reading sessions.
Numeracy: In Numeracy, we will be working on fractions and decimals.
As you are aware the Year 5/6 students have been training to complete the Great Victorian Rail Trail from
Tuesday 24th – Friday 27th October (that’s only 2 weeks away!). They worked hard over the holidays and
continued their training. Well done and good luck, kids!
For parents, it’s not too late to help. We always appreciate parent support and thank the people who have already
volunteered. Please refer to the notes that went home last term and contact Mr. Humphrey if you can help.

The Puckapunyal Primary School again applied for a Term 4 Sporting Schools Grant from the Federal Government.
We were successful and have received a grant. That means, in Term 4 the Puckapunyal Primary School is offering an
opportunity for students to participate in some Before School Sport.
To apply for the grant we had to choose different sports to be the themes of the sessions – for Term 4 the sports are:
Tuesdays - Golf at school for Foundation to Year 6 students.
Wednesdays - Triathlon (Cycling) at school (using Sanananda Rd) for Years 3-6 students. This activity is a great
opportunity for students who want to enter the Individual Triathlon in early December or the 4 Day Bike Ride in
October.
Thursdays - Bat Tennis/Triathlon Fitness at school (back of school on Bat Tennis courts) for Foundation to
Year 6 students.
**All sessions will begin at 7:30am sharp and finish at 8:45am in time for school. Students will need to be there
on time to participate because the group may move around eg. jogging around the block, etc.**
The Program will begin during Week 2 of Term 4.
Any student in the year levels that match the activity can attend. There is no cost. Class teachers and other staff will
be there to meet the students, supervise them and give them an opportunity to participate.
Please see the timetable on the next page. To participate in any of the sessions, we must have a return slip before the

Dear Parent/Guardian
RE: School Run4Fun Colour Explosion
We’re turning our event from bland to GRAND this year by adding an explosion of colour. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects, in particular new play equipment.
The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on Wednesday 14th November (Family Fun Day) starting at 2:30pm. We do ask that
you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt as the students will be covered in powder from head to
toe. The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.
Colour Powder
The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch
and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk Assessment and
ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to
participate.
How Does My Child Fundraise?
Students have now received a Sponsorship Form with instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students obtain donations in
cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising.
Students who raise as little as $10 or more will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. But why not aim higher? You have the option to
choose up to five (5) prizes and this will set your fundraising goal. Family and friends are your greatest supporters, so ask them first for your
support. You will reach your fundraising goal in no time.
Student Profile Page
Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au which is unique to you. There are also some great features like recording
your sponsorships and selecting your prize goal.
You can also register for online fundraising. It’s the easiest way to help your child raise money and to reach your fundraising goal sooner.
The average raised per student using online fundraising is $120.
WIN A SHARE OF $70,000 WORTH OF FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS. Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au and
enter your unique code found on page five (5) of your Sponsorship Form to see if you’re an instant winner. Give your fundraising goal a kick
start!
How to Order Prizes?
To reward your child for their efforts, they will receive incentive prizes based on the total amount of sponsorship dollars raised in cash,
online, and if applicable, any FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS won using the unique code on page five (5) of the Sponsorship Form. You
have two options to place your prize order:
1. Login or create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au. Once the fundraiser has finished, click the ‘ORDER MY PRIZE’
button and then confirm your total amount raised and order your prize/s, OR
2. Complete the back page of the Sponsorship Form and return to the school.
Please note, all donations need to be finalised on or before Friday 16th November. Student prizes will be delivered shortly after.
Thank you in advance for your participation, and get ready for a BLAST OF COLOUR!
Happy fundraising!
