NotebookHigh-speed submarine cable makes land in France

The SEA-ME-WE 5 (South East Asia- Middle East - Western Europe 5) submarine cable, to be operational in the sec-ond half of 2016, landed March 1, 2016, at the submarine cable station of la Seyne-sur-Mer, south of France.

This 20,000 km fiber optic cable will strengthen the Europe-Asia route by providing extra capacity and ensuring the protection of voice and data traffic passing through the other cables in the area. SEA-ME-WE 5 will connect France to Singapore, serving 17 countries including Saudi Arabia, Bangla-desh, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, France, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Republic of Djibouti, Singapore, Sri

Lanka, Turkey and Yemen.Orange Marine, a 100% subsid-

iary of Orange Group manages the installation of the SEA- ME- WE 5 in the Mediterranean, with the four shore ends of France, Egypt, Italy and Turkey.

The cable design is based on the latest 100 Gbps very high-speed technology combined with wave-length division multiplexing1 offer-ing 24 Tbps design capacity of three pairs of fibers. This high-capacity intercontinental highway provides route diversity and resilience to the heavily loaded existing submarine cables between Europe and Asia.

LEONI Matches 2015 Forecast/Gives Outlook for 2016; Works on Laser Project with Laser Zentrum HannoverBased on preliminary calculations, Nürnberg-based LEONI AG generated sales of €4.5 billion in the 2015 financial year versus 2014’s €4.1 billion. Earn-ings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to €151 million versus last year’s €182.5 million. Pre-tax earnings came to slightly more than the forecast level of €130 million. The Wiring Sys-tems Division (WSD) contributed some €87 million to EBIT, with this figure in-cluding nonrecurring income, while the Wire & Cable Solutions Division (WCS) contributed €64 million. Based on the latest analysis of the fore-cast, the LEONI Management Board expects sales of €4.4 billion because of more subdued underlying economic conditions for the current 2016 financial year. EBIT is estimated at €105 million, a figure that includes restructuring costs of approximately €30 million. In other news, LEONI AG, which is the leading European provider of cables and cable systems to the automotive sector and other industries, supported finding the evidence for gravitational waves with special optical fiber cables in a joint project with Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH). An international team of researchers succeeded in showing the collision of two black holes on the basis of gravi-tational waves, thereby providing the

first metrological evidence. The Max-Planck-Institute for Gravitational Physics Hannover (Albert Einstein Institute), the LZH and neoLASE GmbH were significantly involved. The laser head used in the measuring equipment was developed and built by LZH and fitted with assembled special cables from LEONI’s Fiber Optics busi-ness unit.

The two LIGO observatories (Laser Interferometer Gravitation Wave Ob-servatory) in Hanford, WA, USA and Livingston, LA, USA, measure, using their two arms that are each 4000 m in length, the smallest wavelength differ-ences with an interferometer make it possible to detect gravitational waves in a specially developed process.

Relative to the firm’s future divi-dend policy, the Board decided to retain the income-based approach and the defined disbursement ratio of 40% to 50% of net income. A divi-dend of at least CHF 1.00 per share is now envisaged. This means that in financial years where the maxi-mum disbursement ratio of 50% generates less than CHF 1.00 per share, a dividend of CHF 1.00 will be proposed to the following Annual General Meeting.

As a result of the strong financial basis, HUBER+SUHNER can finance this disbursement policy on the basis of its own resources. This results in a sustainable, attractive minimum yield for shareholders.

The NEMA, Rosslyn, VA, USA, Electroindustry Business Condi-

tions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in

North America fell back in February 2016, dropping to 44.4 from 50 the previous month as more panelists reported conditions eroded than improved. Compared to January 2016, smaller shares of the survey panel reported both that business conditions improved (22% in Febru-ary versus 41% in January) and that they deteriorated (33% in February compared to 41% in January). tensity of change in electroindustry business conditions remained in negative territory in February, slip-ping to -0.2 from -0.1 in January.

3M Completes Longest Known Running ACCR Field Test3M, St. Paul, MN, USA, recently com-pleted the longest known field test of a composite conductor in the USA—a 13-year field test of the 3M Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced (ACCR). Installed in 2001 on a 115 kV transmission line at Xcel Energy’s Riverside Plant in Minneapolis, the test demonstrated the strength and resilien-cy of 3M’s ACCR composite conductor in demanding environmental conditions. This field trial installation was the first known installation of a composite con-ductor of any kind in the USA transmis-sion grid. The conductor was operated continuously until it was taken down for testing in December of 2014. Since the Xcel Energy installation, 3M conducted additional field tests at other utilities and at the U.S. Department of Energy outdoor testing facility at Oak Ridge Na-tional Lab. However, the Xcel Energy

Riverside Plant test remains the longest running of all 3M ACCR field tests. The wide-ranging temperatures and changing weather conditions in Min-nesota, from high heat and humidity during the summer months to extreme cold and heavy ice loads in the winter, provided an ideal test environment. The ACCR composite conductor met or exceeded expectations in all levels of line performance. Core samples of the ACCR conductor showed no sign of tensile strength loss, with results ranging from 108% to 110% of rated breaking strength. While the conductor was still in the air, sag-tension was measured and matched the optimum performance expectations of 2990 lb at 20°F.

OFS Expands Microcable LineOFS, Norcross, GA, USA, a lead-ing-edge designer, manufac-turer and supplier of innovative fiber optic network solutions, expands its microcable product line with the MiDia® 2GX cable. This latest-generation cabling solution can help take metro networks to the next level with in-creased fiber density, enhanced performance and significantly greater cost saving opportunities on deployment. The MiDia 2GX microcable capi-talizes on OFS’ advancement in bend-optimized fiber design enabling tight, low-loss bends without risking fiber strength and long-term reliability. These fibers occupy 36% less area than conventional 250 µm coated fiber, enabling smaller diameter cables with a greater number of fibers per tube to minimize cabled diameters in today’s con-gested duct networks. The MiDia 2GX cable range provides system build cost reduc-tion opportuni-ties by enabling increased de-ployment dis-tance, fewer installations and maximized use of congested and limited availability ducts.

Sumitomo launches extra- high-strength superconductor

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. of Japan has developed the extra-high-strength superconduc-tor, DI-BSCCO™ Type HT-NX, by substantially increasing the tensile strength of the company’s high-strength bismuth high-temperature superconductor from 250-270 MPa

to over 400 MPa.The extra-high-strength bismuth

high-temperature superconductor exhibits 50% to 60% higher tensile strength than conventional high-strength bismuth high-temperature superconductors.

This implies that the extra-high-strength superconductor with-stands an increased electromag-netic force to be suitable for use in large magnets and ultra-high magnetic fields to more than 20 tesla, which could not be achieved with conventional high-strength superconductors.
