Welcome Back! I hope all who have been in other locations this past three months had a productive summer. The semester is set
to go into hyper-drive next week when all of our students return to Aggieland.
First, congratulations are in order to Jeff Pate, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist in Lubbock. Jeff and
the other members of the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC) were selected by the Irrigation Awards and Honors
Committee to receive the 2016 National Water and Energy Conservation Award. This award recognizes the TAWC’s achieve-
ments in the conservation of water and energy through irrigation procedures, practices, equipment, methods and techniques. The
awards ceremony will be held on December 7, 2016 during the Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Congratulations again Jeff and team for the great work and this honor!
Congratulations to Bruce McCarl who was notified that he and collaborators from Texas A&M, the University of Maryland, and
the University of Illinois have been awarded two year funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to examine the coupled
relationships of food, bioenergy and water as they are exposed to environmental changes and human intervention. This funding
award is made by the Division of Earth Sciences of the NSF. Congratulations again on this success!
As we head into the new semester, I wanted to update you on our expected enrollment. I’ll focus on undergraduates this week and
do graduate programs next week. We should have about 875 students in our undergraduate program this fall, which is up from 770
last semester. About 527 students are enrolled in the Agricultural Economics degree, with 348 in Agribusiness. Thanks to the
Undergraduate Office staff who spent the summer conducting numerous students conferences and getting ready for a new year.
Donna Adcock, Carissa Beamon, Amy Connolly and Donna Chester did a great job and your efforts are appreciated! Please thank
this team of staff members who have managed a difficult task extremely well.
In you have noticed activity in and around 210U Grad Lab, be aware that some the furniture is being replaced and rearranged to
accommodate more use. We are also going to upgrade the printer and printer services. This should be completed within the next
few weeks.
REMINDERS
The first departmental tailgate will be held Saturday, September 3. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with an Extension Outlook
session, followed at 10:30 with presentations from a number of our students who went on Study Abroad programs this summer.
Food will be served at 11:30. The morning’s events will be in the AgriLife Center, while lunch will be under the tents on the north
lawn. If you plan to attend, but haven’t registered, please do so at the link below. As in past years, this is a great opportunity to
visit with former students and friends of the Department and for our students to network with prospective employers and internship
providers. I hope many of you can attend.
