about the power and strength

SUMMER EDITION 2013 VOLUME 25, NUMBER 2
Hello dear friends and col-
leagues! Time is just passing
by me so fast; I can't believe
half the year is gone. Looking
back, I cannot help but won-
der, what happened all these
past few months? I just re-
member going day by day in a
journey full of learning, adapt-
ing to change and in so many
ways overcoming more and
more challenges. I have no
complaints but instead quite
grateful for my family, friends,
my job and all the wonderful
people around me; smiling and
welcoming the continued
blessings showered upon
me. Many of you can relate
and say the same as we go
about meeting and winning
every day’s little chal-
lenges.
Chicago was as
windy and cold as
I remember it to be
the last time we
were there years ago
for National Confer-
ence. This year was
much more unforgettable
with more excitement than
what I expected. I have met
and became friends with many
TAPAN members and many
more from other components.
Networking was a tall order. It
has become a must to be “friendly-err”. My roommates
Edna Pabruada and Ellen
Abaquin from Abilene, and my
friends, Liz Martin and Deb
Davis from Houston kept me
laughing out loud. It was so
much fun; I enjoyed the cama-
raderie so much. The speakers
from classes I attended were all
amazing. Huge storm with
flooding, hitting just in
time for our departure
back home kept us in
the airport for many
hours, anxious and tired. I
was thankful to have Pam Win-
dle with me during the airport
and flight ordeal. What a joy-
ful, memorable week!
Twyla Shrout, our new
ASPAN President was
inducted at the conference.
Her theme for the upcoming
year is “Dealing with Chal-
lenges: Winning with Power • Practice • Purpose.” In her
speech, she talked about “Challenges” as defined by
Wikipedia: “referring to things
that have a sense of difficulty
and victory, that which encour-
ages someone to do something
Looking Forward to Challenges!

Region 2 Report Director’s Corner
Time flies when you are having fun. At least that is what we hear and most days it is true. The last time I wrote to you all, we were busy getting ready for ASPAN’s 32nd National Conference in Chicago. Well, time did fly by fast. We have inducted our new ASPAN President Twilla Shrout for 2013-2014. She is from Region 2 and we are so proud of her. I look forward to working with her and the rest of the ASPAN Board this coming year to serve our ASPAN members. The 32nd ASPAN National Conference gave us attendees so many opportunities to net-work, learn, explore and make new friends. I hope for those that attended national con-ference that you did take advantage of every opportunity offered to you all. Moving on to this year’s theme, President Twilla Shrout asks us to Deal with Chal-lenges. In your daily work, do you have chal-lenges that seem insurmountable? Do you know who to turn to if those challenges pre-sent themselves? Each day as a pediatric perianesthesia nurse, I am challenged to give my best for the sake of my little patients. There is the challenge of knowing who to call when there are custody issues related to a patient. How about trying to get to the bot-tom of something as simple as “when did you child last eat or drink?”. Most days it is not an issue, but things happen and a child inadvertently picks up a stray candy or piece of cookie in the car. The challenge is in con-vincing parents to reschedule their child’s surgery because it would not be safe for them to have a general anesthesia when npo status is violated. We understand that they have arranged their day off and made plans for other kids to be ready for this day but we also have to think of safety first. This is when the collaborative efforts by both the peri-anesthesia nurse and the anesthesia staff really helps. Address those challenges in your workplace that prevent you from giving your best every day. Perianesthesia nurses are well known to be dependable, knowl-edgeable and trustworthy. It is why we are asked to take care of not just our post sur-gery pts but also ICU pts or pts from the Cath lab or those trauma pt from the ER. I can go on and on. Our compass to guide our prac-tice is embedded in the 2012-2014 Perianes-thesia Nursing Standards , Practice Recom-
mendation and Interpretive Statements man-ual. Do you personally have a copy of them and/or does your unit have them available for reference when challenges to your prac-tice arise? I urge you all to have them at your fingertips. As we move forward and look to implement-
ing the most recent Practice Recommenda-
tion (PR) 10 Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
in the adult pt, think of the challenge of
maybe having to keep these pts in your
PACUs longer. The PR clearly states “ for
planning pt discharge from PACU Phase I –
the pt with suspected OSA should have no
signs of desaturation when left undisturbed ,
if there is, anticipate an extended PACU stay.
“
Another challenge coming our way is how to
best incorporate in our individual practice
the new Position Statement of Use of Social
Media in the workplace which was just voted
and approved by the 2013 Representative
Assembly. I think I have given you all lots to
think about. Individually and globally, we all
practice with patient safety as our main goal.
There are a myriad of challenges to be sure
in our future but they have always been and
will be there. It is up to us to meet them.
I am always at your service. Please contact me at [email protected] if you any ques-tions or comments Sincerely,
Armi Holcombe ASPAN Region 2 Director 2012-2014

Debra Davis and I attended the Repre-

4/12th. RA is the governing body which
acts upon and formally approves resolu-
tions, ASPAN’s position and recom-
mendations on certain nursing issues or
guidelines concerning PeriAnesthesia
nursing practices. We only had to vote
on one issue: ASPAN’s Position State-
ment on Social Media and PeriAnesthe-

much discussion, as members and lead-
ers acknowledged the impact of social
media on clinical practice, patient safety
and professional behaviors.
ABPANC’s Advocacy Award is given

Annual TAPAN State Conference, to be
held in Grapevine, TX in October, is
fast approaching! Pru Nietupski, Presi-
dent of North and East TX region, and
the Conference Committee members are
working very hard to offer an excellent
conference once again. Please make
plans to attend. I hope to see and meet
many of you. Am I relieved that my
term will be over soon after? I don’t
really know, but I am sure it is sad to
think I will be preparing a farewell
speech!
In my reflections, I often thought how I
could be a better TAPAN President;
how I could serve you better, to the best
of my ability. Being caught in the web
of endless work at home and my family,
deadlines to meet at my job, learning
and hoping to share many and all the
gifts I have, commitment with friends
and TAPAN…If only I can do this or
do that! “We should never look back;
only think of today and whatever lies
ahead of us”, I was told several times.
So let us do that, why don’t we? Look
forward! What is in there ahead, wait-
ing for us?
Have a safe, fun filled summer!

The first half of 2013 provided several opportunities for community outreach, involvement and health activities. Caring and compassion are important aspects of perianesthesia nursing, and our HCSTR nurses carried these qualities from the bedside into the community as well. Here’s a look at some of the activities TAPAN HCSTR nurses have participated in this year. Community Involvement Cocoa Run ½ Marathon/5k/1mile run or walk. Several of our members participated in this fundraising event on 1/20/13. The event benefitted children’s charities and provided the participants a wonderful workout. 2/16/13. The First Aid Booth was well represented during the Asian Fest, held at
the Institute of Texan Cultures, located in downtown San Antonio. 11 nurses from our region volunteered for this event. In March, Julie Peterson went to Cambodia as part of her non-profit organization, Nurse Endeavor. TAPAN HCSTR helped provide supplies to impoverished children in the sex slave industry and in orphanage. Items do-nated from our members included clothing, toothbrushes, school supplies, rice, toys and stuffed animals. Please visit http://www.nurseendeavor.org, to learn more about Nurse Endeavor, and prepare to get inspired! Susan B. Komen Race For The Cure was held on 4/6/13 in San Antonio.
