HWS LOTTERY 

Did you know that two volunteers (Highgate Wood mums) run a lottery at the school?  

There are really great prizes to be won every term ‐ meals in swanky local restaurants, theatre tickets, champagne, oh yes, and cash! Each lottery ticket only costs £1 a month, so £12 a year and you can 

buy as many (or as few) as you like. At the moment a really tiny number of Highgate Wood parents and carers hold tickets so we only manage to raise a fraction of what we could be raising to buy much needed (and hugely appreciated) extra stuff for all departments making all our kids' experience of school as fulfilling as possible.   

Need proof? Well, how's this? If every parent/carer bought only ONE lottery ticket a year, costing them only TWELVE POUNDS a year (which is, let's face it, the cost of two and half pints, a couple of DVDs, a handbag from Primark, a really expensive pair of tights) the lottery would raise over sixteen thousand pounds a year! 

Come on, please, buy a lottery ticket ‐ just one! It will make a difference!

SCHOOL WEBSITE GOES MOBILE FRIENDLY 

We have launched a mobile friendly school website to provide easily accessible information and notices. 

If you go to the regular school website from a mobile device you should now get the new screen rather than the usual one. 

The recent snowfall has given us the opportunity to trial a service provided for London schools called LGfL OpenCheck.  

Now if you dial 0208408 7508 and give the school’s DfE code 3094030 you get a recorded message of our status. 

It is a simple system that seems to work well. We will be keeping it up‐to‐date so it can be used in the future in the event of severe weather or emergency school closure. Please make a note of the number and code.  

IS THE SCHOOL OPEN? 

Since the last issue of Insight we have run one of our Governors' surgeries at the invitation of the PSA, where individual parents and carers were able to raise issues with us.  

This was a very useful session, providing important information about parents' 

concerns to add to the feedback we get through questionnaires and other means, so thank you to all parents who came along.  I hope the PSA will be inviting us back in due course. 

The issues raised included homework, languages teaching, and how to decipher progress reports! These will all be taken up by governors; I am confident that increased use of the website will make it easier for parents to keep track of homework schedules, and we will continue to look at ways to improve communication with parents generally.  

Our next full Governing body is in March, when we will be finalising budget plans for 2012‐13.  For the school, as for the rest of the public sector, money is tight. Our principles for the coming year are to make efficiencies where we can, but continue to offer a broad curriculum and maintain a period of stability where we can build on our improvements this year. 

Finally, we have been looking at priorities for our small capital budget, including necessary upgrades to CCTV, to maintain security for all on what is a relatively spread‐out site, and improvements to students' toilets. Watch out for more details.

Message from Mr Cozier 

Welcome Back to Successful Learning at Highgate Wood School 

I wish to start this edition of HWS Insight by taking this opportunity to wish you all a very belated Happy New Year! As always however, time flies and instead of reflecting on the festivities of Christmas and the New Year celebrations, we have 

already reached the spring half term break. This represents the mid‐point of the academic years for schools and as such a critical juncture for assessing progress and ensuring that we are on track to achieve our aims – both individually and collectively. 

It has been a very positive start to the year for us. Students arrived back and were well rested and eager to go – the positive ethos in the school has further developed and thrived following the positive and deserved feedback from Ofsted (as described in the previous issue of Insight). Our self belief as a community continues to grow as we aspire towards being the outstanding school that we know we can be. 

I also need to thank Ed Harlow, his staff and our fantastic students for the amazing finish to 2011 with a very high quality and entertaining Winter Concert. The standard that we set year on year is impressive and it is very special to see our young people demonstrating their talent and commitment on stage. Thank you and well done to all! 

This Term – The Key Focuses 

A reminder that during this term our learning and teaching focus has been on homework and the use of the Managed Learning Environment (MLE) 

I am happy to report particularly pleasing progress on the use of the MLE where we can electronically store information, resources and homework for our students to access when not in school. 

Over the course of the last term we have moved from a school where the MLE was in its infancy to one of the most successful schools in Haringey for MLE usage. There is still some way to go however, but it is pleasing to know that such rapid progress is being made. 

Year 11 – Getting those grades 

If you are the parent of a child in Year 11, you will be aware that our students sat their Year 11 Mock Exams before the Christmas break. Since we have come back, they have received their Mock Exam Results (you can 

read more about the Mock Exam Results Day later in this edition) and as a result they all know on an individual level how well they are achieving – and what else they need to do to hit their personal targets across each of their subjects.  

All of our Year 11s are putting in the maximum amount of effort and we expect to see many of them over half term doing extra study (in addition to the after school and weekend sessions that many currently attend. It is also a testament to dedication of the staff members who are making themselves available to help support our students.  

What is pleasing for us as a school is that both individually and collectively, our Year 11s are broadly on target to achieve and exceed what we believe they are capable of. A reminder of our results for the last few years and our target for 2012 is shown below.  

As can be seen, we are rightly proud of our significant jump last year – and this year we expect to do even better! We know what are students are capable of when backed by our excellent staff and supportive parents. Let’s ensure that we continue to work together to help them achieve their best. 

We have received official confirmation that the progress that our students makes at Post 16 is in the top 20% of 16‐18 schools/colleges nationally. Later in the edition, my Head of 6th Form, Nick Charlesworth explains this in more detail. 

For me though, the key message is that we are consistently gaining recognition and approval for the quality of our provision in the 6th form and the good outcomes that our students achieve. We are proud of our 6th form and look forward to seeing a large number of our current year 11 students performing excellently in the summer GCSE exams and then progressing on to do well with the teachers that know them best in the 6th form.

Parent/Carers’ Evening Appointments Trial Success  

I would like to thank parents for their very positive feedback following the last three Parent/Carers’ evenings. Those of you who have attended will be aware that we have changed the organisation of the evening and used an appointments system. 

As you would expect, the appointments do not necessarily work rigidly and there can be some ‘slippage’ – but what I have heard back from you has been very positive in terms of your experience. Parents have told me that the queuing times have been significantly reduced and that the time constraints of each conversation with a subject teacher have made the discussions swift and concise, but with no lessening in the quality of information and guidance shared. 

As ever, we are also pleased that so many parents and carers continue to show their support for their children and for the school with excellent attendance figures for each evening. 

 

Staff Changes ‐ a hello and a sad goodbye! 

This term has seen us welcome two teachers into the PE Department. Caroline Boyce and Martin Greenwood have joined us to replace Kristee Arkle and Scott Keough who both left at Christmas. Both Ms Boyce and Mr Greenwood have settled in really well and are already beginning to have a positive impact on their students. 

I am also pleased and proud to be able to congratulate my Deputy Head, Paul Guenault on successfully gaining his first headship. After 5½ years as my deputy at HWS, Mr Guenault has just been appointed as the Headteacher of Wapping High School, Tower Hamlets – a brand new school due to open in September 2012. There is lots of work for him to do before September in terms of setting up the new school and appointing his staff, and consequently, he will be leaving us at Easter to start his new post. 

This is a fantastic opportunity for Mr Guenault. I am sure that you will join me in thanking him for his significant contribution to HWS and also to wish him all the best in his new and exciting venture!  

I will write to you again in the April edition of Insight to give you more information about how we are going to manage for the summer term and beyond given Mr Guenault’s departure. 

 

 

 

... And Finally – An Appreciation Display 

A couple of months ago, I introduced an appreciation display wall in the main reception of the school. It is a display of positive comments that we have received from parents, carers and other members of the community or visitors to the school. We regularly receive lots of positive feedback from our community, and the appreciation display gives us an opportunity to show these off to those that visit us.

Mr Mansfield writes: At the start of the Spring term, Year 11 students were kept on tender hooks in anticipation of their final predicted grades.  Students had previously sat mock examinations in most of their subjects and were eagerly awaiting the outcomes of these important tests; results that would be used for application forms for Highgate Wood School Sixth Form and others.  Staff had expressed how students had been ‘pestering’ them for clues or any ‘indications’ as to how they had performed.  Fortunately, no information was revealed!  This led to a very similar atmosphere to the one that they will experience on the third Thursday in August.  With the key question in everyone’s minds: How well have I actually done?  

 The only problem was, they had to wait to receive their envelopes. 

 A special assembly occurred during period 5 where Year 11 students and their tutors listened to speeches from the Headteacher Mr Cozier, the Deputy Headteacher Mr Guenault,  Assistant Headteacher Mr Mansfield and Head of Year 11 Mr Key.  These were intended to motivate, inspire and give messages about the time they have left to ensure success occurs at the end of Year 11, in August, when they will open their envelopes and get their results for real.  Students were keen to get to the moment when envelopes could be opened.  And the nervous smiles and, in some cases, tears demonstrated that they wanted to desperately know – and get it over and done with! 

Mr Key, Year 11 Head of Learning said: “I stood at the front and tried to see everyone's reactions as we counted down from ten and opened the envelopes. 

“There were a few seconds of silence and then each student's results were reflected in the expressions on their faces: there were happy faces and sad ones.  However, whatever the results are currently, the students now have the chance to turn those predictions into what they really want to achieve in August.” 

 Year 11 student Joshua Gamble said, “The event was tense.  But the outcome was enjoyable and one which I hope will be replicated in August.”

good atmosphere.  I liked the fact that everyone had to open their envelopes at the same time.  Now I know which subjects I have to really work  on” 

 Students were given a short period of time to reflect.  They departed fully aware of where things were going really well and where they needed to place extra focus and commitment.  This event was followed by Year 11 Parents Evening where they will have been given the key pieces of advice from their teachers that will enable them to be successful ‐ and make a difference. 

Head of Mathematics, Miss Payton said “In the aftermath, students seemed exuberant and had a sudden moment of epiphany, where they were jabbering about what they had got and what they wanted and needed to do now.” 

 Ms Pinnick said, “I liked the adrenaline rush.  It was just like the actual day.  It was fantastic to see students who had worked hard getting the high results that they deserved.” 

 We know that this has been a key part in ensuring students continue with that focussed, committed approach to prepare for their actual examinations. 

 We wish them all the best over the next term and a half.  We know Year 11 will be successful and will do themselves, their families, and Highgate Wood School proud.

Year 7 Art Exhibition 2012

Ms Zwicky writes: The Year 7 Exhibition was the celebration of all the work happening during the Autumn term, where students were working around the ideas of identity and Hybrid Cultures. In the exhibition you could see personalised postage 

stamps, a whole wall of masks working with the idea of hybrid identities, and the centrepiece of the exhibition was the giant teapot installation with beautiful personalised cups. The Installation was a collaborative piece from all Year 7s, containing mandala spots and continuous line drawings which were all created during the Art Enrichment day. 

It was a great event where many parents got the chance to see how the students  have settled into secondary school life.

Mr Charlesworth writes: As Alps, the official approved measure of A‐level performance, ranks Highgate Wood School in the top 20% of sixth form provision nationally for the fourth year running, we have had a record number of applications for enrolment in September 2012. As well as our Year 11 students, almost a hundred students from other schools have expressed interest in coming here, with many already being offered places. 

At the end of January the Hornsey Journal reminded us of our success with Ofsted and in particular their comments about our sixth form:  “The sixth form curriculum is developed and adapted continually, and academic support provided by tutors is valued, particularly when applying for places in higher education.”  

ATTENDANCE UPDATE Mr Hartley writes: My thanks to all parents and students for the positive way in which you have improved the attendance of many students.  Our EWO Roger Worth has issued over 50 certificates to students whose attendance has significantly improved . 

Please remember to maintain this as a focus.  Attendance has a direct impact of KS3 levels and GCSE grades.   

Below are some key facts that it is well worth remembering: 

⇒ The mean number of sick days taken by adults  is 6.7 per year (97% attendance) 

⇒ 95% attendance is still equivalent to two weeks out of school in a year 

⇒ Research shows that 17 missed days (91.5% attendance) = a grade lower in all GCSEs 

LEARNING SUPPORT OPEN SURGERY Mr Dobrashian writes: Beginning after half term we will be having open surgeries every Monday of Week 1 for parents and carers who wish to discuss any issues relating to SEN and Learning Support. Please email Ms Owen at tow@hws.haringey.sch.uk beforehand.  Once the surgery is running we will see whether we require a system for booking appointments. 

YEAR 9 OPTIONS Ms Pinnick writes: Well done to all Year 9 students who completed their Options Forms before the deadline and clearly put a great deal of thought into their choices for next year. 

I will be going through all the information over the next few weeks and will get in contact with any student if their Option choices need to be discussed or clarified. 

For the majority of students you will receive confirmation of your Option arrangements in May. 

MUSIC LESSONS Ms Hassan writes: Music Fees for the Spring Term 2012 are due by the end of February. Please pay promptly  

It is important that your child remembers to come to their music lesson without being fetched every time.  The emphasis is upon the student to attend their lesson on time.   If a pattern of non‐attendance is apparent then consideration will be taken to taking your child off the Music Timetables 

Could I also remind parents that a minimum of five weeks notice is required to cancel music lessons, otherwise you will be charged for 5 lessons.

MATHS ONLINE Ms Payton writes: Together with the MLE the Maths Department use three sites with our students. 

Most popular is www.MyMaths.co.uk   the current login is highgate followed by redpen  (this changes every September). The school pays a yearly subscription for the site and have found it to be a beneficial investment. It has a mixture of lessons, games, homework and booster sessions for all students including A Level. Students have their own passwords but only need them to complete a set homework. 

GCSE students preparing for exams benefit from doing the revision sessions for D/C and C/B  boosters, while the younger students often use the site to prepare for KS3 assessments. 

www.emaths.co.uk  is an excellent free site that lets students try previous SATS papers, and has links to  numerous other Maths sites. Mr. Green, Ms. Diego and Ms. Payton have recently given their classes passwords to get onto MangaHigh which is a free site that delivers Maths through games. Florence Penfold is currently zooming up the challenge chart with 8 bronze medals, but only Cherie Herman Aaron Pettit Gabe Weston and Alfie Mowse have managed to get a Gold medal. 

95 Year 11 are sitting GCSE Maths on 2nd & 5th March. Revision sessions are being run after school on Thursdays, Saturday mornings and half‐term Monday to Wednesday (10th to the 12th) 

Miss Payton is also available for exam help after school on Wednesday and most lunch‐times. Past papers can be printed off and marked from the MLE. 

Following Year 9s success with using Scratch to learn how to program we have now joined Microsoft’s Dreamspark initiative so that students who would like to experiment further with computer programming  can download professional Microsoft developer, designer and gaming software for free. (The software will only work on a Windows PC) .

Ms Patel writes: Thanks to the PSA every student from Years 7 to 11 now has access to MyWorks for Science . 

MyWorks is a terrific resource to support the learning of Science in all years. Every student has already been given their login details—which is their school email address (regularlogin@lgflmail.net) and an initial password that they can then change. 

MyWorks is available through the MLE and goes together with the simulation resources that are there.  These are complicated programs and we do know that they are not working for some students on their computers at home. 

We are now working with the London MLE to solve these problems. 

MLE UPDATE Mr Ashman writes: 

The MLE is a school development focus this term and we have made huge strides in  developing the resource to support learning and teaching across the school. 

Already we are one of the highest users of the Managed Learning Environment amongst Haringey secondary schools and we hope to improve this even further over the coming weeks. 

Many thanks to those parents who braved the wintry weather to attend our Parent Information Sessions on the MLE, e‐safety and other digitally technologies in the school in the last week of the half term.  

We will be running another session for parents later in the year.  Details will be publicised closer to the time.

FIRST STORY AT SOMERSET HOUSE Alexandra Burgess from 9G writes: On the 23rd January, nine students including myself left school to go to  Somerset  House  for  a meet  with  First  Story.  First  Story  is  an organisation that runs  in several schools and  lets  local authors visit and encourage young people to write, eventually publishing a book of short stories and poems. The day was a writing workshop focused on the art within Somerset House or the building itself. 

We set off to Highgate station, took the tube to Charring Cross, and then made the short walk to Somerset house. We were pointed  in the direction of  First  Story  and  quickly  separated  in  small  groups that were supervised by some of the schools’  local authors as well as the teachers.  

We were  led up the stairs and stopped  in front of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds of Cupid and Psyche.  It was a dark picture  full of shadows,  the only  light  issuing  from a  flickering candle held above their  heads  by  the  hand  of  Psyche, whom was  hovering  over  the fallen  body  of  cupid. We were  asked  to  look  at  the  painting  and write a story of what  it could be? What could be happening? The sorrowful painting was described by one as the light being a knife that was ready to kill the young boy before it. To another it was a mother and child. 

After our stories were written we were asked if we could read them out to the group, then we were lead to a small refreshment room where we lingered for a while, students buzzing excitedly and exchanging stories of the day. We sat in a small hall where the best stories from each group were picked to be read out to all the people at First Story. One group told the story of Adam and Eve, another of the bandaged ear of Vincent Van Gogh. Many  lovely stories were read out and were praised by the people in the hall. After a speech of thanks to all who attended and a short survey, and travelling back to the station for 7pm, we were ready to go home. 

I loved the day at First Story and all the work that was produced. It has given me another viewpoint into art and has made me think of all the meanings of a simple brush‐stroke. I hope others will have as much joy in writing as I do and will continue to do so. 

 

 

 

 

 

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 

Oscar Clements, Omar Lindsay and Frankie Morrisey‐Murin from 9D write: 

Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply the lessons learned to the present day in the hopes of creating a safer, better future. On this day, we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution. 

One of the most overwhelming things from the day was that there was a Holocaust survivor.  The day reminds us of the cruelty that humans sometimes inflict upon one another and how very important it is to challenge these things. 

Sometimes the little things., such as name‐calling and bullying can lead to the bigger things.  Let us hope some lessons will be learned. Oscar, Omar and Frankie took part in the Holocaust Memorial Debate at the Civic Centre for which they received a trophy.  Their full report is included in the on‐line edition of insight.

Ms Osborne writes: Due to the huge success of Comenius 2009‐2011, Highgate Wood School has embarked upon a new international project on encouraging ‘Healthy active lifestyles’. Last November Ms Osborne and Ms Allaway travelled to Aalborg 

in Denmark to begin work on developing the project.  The main purpose of their visit was to gain insight how a variety of countries promote healthy and active lifestyles both in and out of school. Plans were also made to enable groups of students to participate in visits to each other’s countries. In February a group of Year 10 students will be visiting Belgium to focus on nutrition and healthy eating, and in May another group will be visiting Estonia to focus on sporting activities Full reports of these trips will be available later. 

Aalborg, Denmark 

 Mr Grimmett writes: The eco‐schools team want your 

unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts, curtains, hats, towels and bedding in any condition!  Highgate Wood School has 

teamed up with Phil the Bag which is an organisation which collects unwanted textiles with the aim of recycling them thereby reducing landfill waste and helping out charitable organisations such as Barnardos. In addition to this the school also earns money which can be used to fund the eco‐schools group and other areas of the school. The more we donate to them the more money we receive and the more we can spend on our students. 

All bags should be brought to Mr Grimmett in P17 (all donations should be clean as he doesn’t want a smelly room. The deadline for delivery is 28th February. 

LET’S RECYCLE OUR OLD CLOTHES! 

MODEL UN AT HIGHGATE WOOD Mr O’Connor writes: In March we will be hosting another Model UN Conference.  This will involve our students not only as delegates but also as administrators, organisers and reporters. We expect over 90 students to be directly involved in the event, and will be reporting on the outcomes in the next issue of Insight. 

E‐TWINNING COMES TO HIGHGATE WOOD SCHOOL Ms. Lacroix writes 

Year 8 dual linguists are embarking an eTwinning link, working on a project with Year 7 students from a partner school in the south of France. eTwinning is part of Comenius, the EU programme for schools, and is already very well established on the continent, with over a hundred thousand participants. To begin our first project our students will be communicating with their partners in France using Comic Life ‐ everything created as a comic strip.  Hopefully we will be able to include some of those comic strips in the next issue of Insight.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Ms Kemp writes: Students from Year 7 and 8 made a wonderful effort to collect shoe boxes of gifts for Operation Christmas Child. 

More than 40 boxes of Christmas gifts were collected and sent to children in Belarus. 

Well done to everyone involved. 

Ms Green writes: On Thursday 26th January, Highgate Wood School hosted the first round of competitions in Debate Mate’s Urban Debate League. Students involved in the school’s debating club were selected to put their skills into practice by competing against five other visiting schools.  Each team entered two debates: one on euthanasia and one on a proposed 8 o clock curfew for under 16s. All three Highgate Wood teams rose to the challenge and performed extremely well on the night, with one team winning both of their debates!  

Natalya de La Motte writes: “I like Debate Mate because it is a good way to boost your self confidence and learn more skills for English and other subjects.” whilst Fuaad Shurie says "Debate Mate gives use chance to improve our skills to make a big difference to our education. Debate Mate is an unforgettable experience for me and I strongly suggest that students in Year 8 and 9 join in."  

The debating teams are now training for the next round of the Urban Debate League, coming up in March. 

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE Open:  every school day at 8:00 am              every break time              every lunchtime        and...  every school day after school:      until 5:00 pm Monday to Wednesday     until 4:00 pm on Thursday and Friday 

WORLD BOOK DAY VISITOR Ms Green writes: The popular teen‐fiction author Karen McCombie, will be visiting the LRC for World Book Day at lunch time on Thursday 1st 

March.  To be in with a chance of meeting Karen McCombie, students must submit a review of one of her books to Miss Green in the LRC by Friday 24th February. 

Congratulations to all the new student library assistants who have made a fantastic start and are making a hugely positive contribution to the running of the LRC.

Behind the Scenes of Lysistrata  Ms Masters writes: This year students from Years 7‐9 have given up their Saturdays to create the set for this year's play Lysistrata..  The set club team have worked hard to prepare the flats and paint on the design of a whiskey factory, heavily influenced by Greek architecture. The team have also had fun creating the props and small details which help the play come alive, and are now looking forward to seeing the set and cast come together for the show.
