PERSERVERANCE Wally Budgell, President & CEO

The 2018 Winter Olympics have just completed in PyeongChang, and as we often see, there were a number of exciting and interesting storylines that emerged from the games. Some of the stories were intriguing as competitors fought through adversity to win, while others did not reach their goals and suffered with disappointing results. The 2018 Olympics was the most successful in Canadian history as the country won 29 medals, more than in any other Olympic games and the team finished third in the standings.

Samuel Girard won gold in men’s short track speed skating, surprising everyone after finishing last in his semi-final heat, and only advanced after a teammate was penalized. Samuel persevered and went from last to first and won gold.

The USA men’s curling team finished the round robin portion of the event with a mediocre 5-4 record, only to defeat the favorites from Canada in the semifinal and then Sweden in the gold medal game. The team persevered through a difficult start to win when it was all on the line. It was the first gold medal in curling in USA history, having finished dead last, 4 years earlier.

In the woman’s gold medal hockey game, team USA overcame a 2-1 deficit at the end of the second period to tie the score late in the third and ultimately win the gold medal in a shootout. The gold medal was team USA’s first in woman’s hockey since 1998, losing to the Canadian’s in four Olympic events in a row. History had shown how difficult it was to beat the Canadian’s, but team USA persevered to win gold.

Webster’s dictionary defines perseverance as “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition”. All of the Olympic examples I have noted above fit the definition.

Sports is not the only place where perseverance is needed. I’m sure we all have examples in our personal lives where we have persevered to accomplish something where we faced difficulties, failure or opposition.

I also believe it fits with our efforts at RBI; Whether you are a member of one of our field teams, dealing with difficult conditions to complete an installation - or you are a Project Manager, managing a project that appears to have issues that may look to be unsurmountable - if you are an estimator, preparing a budget for a project that is not clearly defined - or if you are a member of our sales team struggling to land that new client, we all need to have the perseverance to achieve something despite difficulties, failure or opposition, and our history has shown we have!

So, as you deal with the issues you face every day, persevere and you will overcome those difficulties, failure or opposition. Thank you for your

perseverance, helping us overcome difficulties, allowing us to accomplish our goals, and for helping RBI be the best service provider we can be.

PROJECT MANAGERS IN BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Lou Smith, Corporate Manager of Operations

What is the role of a Project Manager in Business Development?

Project Managers are the face of the company during the course of construction for many of our major projects. If we are to be successful, Project Managers must provide a value-added service to our customers, and continue to foster those relationships in order to develop recurring business opportunities.

The value-added service that the project manager adds to the process are essential to establishing RBI as a valued partner to our customers. Examples of value added services include, providing value engineering which will expedite construction, creating cost savings, suggesting alternative means and methods, or equivalent products which have shorter lead times.

The project manager should always be looking ahead in the schedule and analyzing potential construction problems, or the impact of delayed delivery of long lead items. These items may include an analysis of a particular fixture type as it relates to the ceiling construction and advancing an effort to coordinate the construction between the carpenters and electricians in advance to smooth out the process, or the inclusion of the end users maintenance staff in a construction coordination meeting to assist them in understanding the installation for future maintenance needs.

It is also imperative that the project staff initiate the relationships with the owner or end user of the facility to ensure that their needs are met, and that they will be happy with the final product, as well as including them in the warranty process. This will enhance their satisfaction with the system we have installed and lead to a long-standing relationship for service work, renovations, or additions to the facility down the road.

Nothing advances the reputation of the company more than completing the work for which we are contracted professionally, both on time, and while meeting or exceeding the expectations of the customer.

Employee SpotlightRob Lamb

Congratulatins to Rob Lamb who is celebrating his 20 year anniversary with RBI!

Rob started with Robertson Bright in February 1998, a young man filled with enthusiam, stars in his eyes and a terrific young wife & a new son. Today, Rob is still a young man filled with enthusiasm always willing to jump into any situation handed to him and gets the job done with a smile. Rob has worked numerous positions over the years; Project Manager, Purchaser and Estimator to name a few (did I mention Janitor?!). Most recently he was part of the Cloud Estimating Team before returning to the Account Manger role. It’s nice to see his head out of the “clouds” and both feet back on the ground.

He and his wife now have two sons, both of whom have completed their basic schooling and are moving into their own futures.

On February 23rd, Rob received his 20 year RBI gift, a logo’d leather jacket at a social function in his honor. The entire Calgary team attended to show their gratitude. What a milestone!

Enrique continues the finishings on Phase 1B, a 3000amp service upgrade and recently awarded DPP project (lab testing facility for marijuana). Solace health has since been purchased by Terrascend. RBI teams have been working on renovations for Solace outside of the construction site as well. Dylan Evans and his teamreworked and added communications throughout the office, a pending small office renovation, an additional 6 or more grow rooms, and a new load side distribution system are also in the works. Also, the MLB has contracted RBI Ontario to supply and install all required electrical for their new radar system to measure pitch speed from the mound to homeplate.

Employee SpotlightPaul QuickLong time employee, Paul Quick, began his career with Robertson Bright in January 1976 as an employee of John L. Robertson. Now 42 years later, Paul is retiring. Over the past 42 years, Paul’s reputation with our organization as a specialist in Industrial Electronic Controls has built long-lasting customer relationships with Cascade, Gerrity Containers and Acorn Packaging to name a few. He is an expert in Corrugators Installation and Service and we thank him for his dedication to RBI and our valued customers over the years. Paul and his wife Margo of 42 years have plans to move to British Columbia to escape the snowy winters of Ontario to enjoy a more seasonable climate of the west coast of Canada. Paul will be greatly missed by all here at RBI Ontario but we wish him health and happiness as he moves into the next chapter of his life.

Harrah’s Laughlin - RBI Nevada crews refitted this 410 room tower including electrical in rooms, bathrooms, hallways and other common areas. This project seems to grow with every passing day. A simple trim package swap has transformed into a full blown remodel with all the fun that comes along with it. Our team led by John Haney and Kurt Dassen have been rolling through all the changes as quick and effectively as can be expected. The project end date is quickly nearing with March Madness beginning soon. The Resort is looking forward to being back at full capacity by March 30th. Hat’s off to our team for their dedication and providing an excellent product to our new customer and client, Trident Construction.

Stable Development (SHP Building IV) - Construction is close to wrapping up on this new two-story, 43,000 sq ft core and shell building project. Foreman, Lino Rico has done a fantastic job leading the crew to finish on schedule. Finishing touches are in place and the project will be completed by the end of March.

New Jerusalem Church - This project is a blast from the RBI past. New Jerusalem Church has laid dormant for three years and was resurrected by the congregation back in November 2017. Under the leadership of Account Manger Paul Okashige and Foreman George Leach, the project is quickly coming together after a few bumps and hurdles early on. At our current pace we are on track to have the congregation enjoy their first service on Easter Sunday.

December 2017 marked Raechel Grimblot’s one year anniversary with RBI. She began her career with us as the branch Administrative Assistant but soon proved herself which eventually led to her promotion to Project Manager Administrator in February 2018.

Rae is very resourceful and dedicated to every project she undertakes; which is why we are so grateful she made her way to us from Consolidated Mechanical.

In Raechel’s free time, she has a passion for confectionery, specifically cake baking. She also loves animals and has a 9-year old black Lab named Garth who is a civilian bomb K-9 officer!

Raechel’s professional demeanor and confidence is a welcomed complement to our Project Management Team and we look forward to what the future will bring to her and the Las Vegas team.

TEMPERATURE CHECKJason Braam, Director of Human Resources & Safety

As the spring season arrives, we see vivid and vibrant colors replace the greys and browns of winter. This is the time of year, when new life comes to the barren trees and ground ... it is a time of new beginnings. Just as we encounter different seasons in nature, companies too experience periods of variation. Every business encounters highs and lows, successes and failures and wins and losses. It is grit, commitment, determination and resilience that differentiates the passion and perseverance of high achievers from simply mediocre players.

After relentlessly navigating through a season of challenges and change, we felt the timing was appropriate to take the temperature of our team; gauging how the team was fairing after a longer than anticipated battle. Every member of the RBI team at all 5 of our locations, situated in 4 cities, across 3 time-zones and bridging 2 countries, was invited to participate and share their perspectives.

We saw an approximate 40% rate of participation, with data gathering efforts focused on an analysis of responses to questions aimed to gauge team member happiness, the degree of engagement of the RBI staff, and how well prepared and outfitted does our team feel they are to achieving success in their respective roles.

Some distinct differences were noted when analyzing the aggregated responses comparing various RBI branches, with very positive indications of job enjoyment, understanding of organizational expectations and connectivity that employees felt with their direct manager. We also noted some very clear indications that our team members desire increased feedback and greater sharing of information, in and about the organization.

We are bridging some of these identified gaps by ensuring that all of our leaders schedule and participate in One-on-One discussions with each member of their respective teams. This includes developing an understanding of how each person is doing personally, jointly establishing personal objectives, mapping out personal development goals, in addition to reviewing progress on short and long term deliverables.

We will now continue leveraging the feedback provided to bring growth and new life to the areas that our team members identified as weaknesses, while further enhancing areas that were viewed positively, to develop even stronger scores in the time to come.

FOUR STEPS FOR DATA SECURITYTim Rushton, Manager of Information Technology

There are fundamental things you can always do to protect yourself, regardless of what technology you are using or where you are using it. If you follow these four key steps, you’ll go a long way to protecting yourself.

YouFirst and foremost, keep in mind that technology alone will never be able to fully protect you. Attackers have learned that the easiest way to bypass even the most advanced security technology is by attacking you. If they want your password, credit card, or personal data, the easiest thing for them to do is to trick you into giving them this information. This is how attacks such as Ransomware or CEO Fraud start. Ultimately, the greatest defense against attackers is you. Be suspicious. By using common sense, you can spot and stop most attacks. PasswordsUse a strong, unique password for each of your devices and online accounts. The key words here are strong and unique. A strong password means one that cannot be easily guessed by hackers or by their automated programs. Try using a passphrase instead of complex passwords that are hard to remember and difficult to type. Use a series of words that is easy to remember, such as “Where are my keys?” The longer your passphrase is, the stronger it is. Use a different password for each device and online account. This way, if one password is compromised, all of your other accounts and devices are still safe.

UpdatesMake sure your computers, mobile devices, and anything else connected to the Internet are running the latest software versions. Cyber criminals are constantly looking for new vulnerabilities in the software your devices use. When they discover vulnerabilities, they write programs to exploit them and hack into the devices you are using. If your operating systems or devices are old and no longer supported with security updates, replace them. BackupsSometimes, no matter how careful you are, you might be hacked. If that is the case, often your only option to ensure your computer or mobile device is free of malware is to fully wipe it and rebuild it from scratch. The attacker might even encrypt your files for a ransom, preventing you from accessing your personal files, photos, and other information. Often the only way to restore all of your personal information is from a backup. Make sure you are doing regular backups of any important information and verify that you can restore from them. Most operating systems and mobile devices support automatic backups. 14
