Project: Summary:

Our client is an US Based Insurance company whose Policy processing system is on Legacy Mainframe. It comprises of 14 test regions, 1 Pre-production region and 1 production region. Each region has a Transaction database (TD) which consists of policies which will be processed in the nightly batch cycle. This cycle is starts around 20:00 hours EST (which is 18:30 IST) in each region and takes on average 3-4 hours to complete provided there are no abends. During this time, all the test CICS regions are down making them unavailable for offshore testers.

On an average, the time regions are available around 11:30 noon IST. With the IBM Offshore team working in general shift of 9-6, two hours go unproductive due to region un-availability. For few of the heavily used regions the wait time sometimes exceeds 4 hrs. This has a direct impact on the deliverables and metrics. IBM Proposed Solution:

During the Quality & Innovation Summit conducted in Dec 2012, IBM team has performed a RCA for the prolonged execution of the Batch cycle. The entries on the TD have been analyzed and classified under five categories.

Many of the job abends in the test regions are caused due to data issues on old policies adding to the cycle delays.

IBM has proposed a new purging mechanism which aims at cleaning the Transaction database in all regions and also prevents any future pileups due to automatic renewals.

IBM implemented Solution:

IBM has designed and implemented a new purge mechanism for the TD in the test regions. This includes

Developing a new TD purge program which purges the entries on TD based on the activity date

Since automatic renewals have been a major contributor for increase in TD entries, a new program has been developed which will stop automatic renewals for old policies based policy age

This new process has been scheduled as a Weekly activity instead of One time cleanup Clean up was carried in three phases

Benefits Realized: Average the batch cycle time reduced by 60% across regions.

Regions availability increased by 70% increasing the productivity of Testing team

Decreased system abends in test regions
