    The action was slowly winding

    down at Magic Millions’ Bundall

complex as day three of the

    annual Gold Coast Yearling Sale

    drew to a close.

It was a session in which the sale’s only

    million-dollar yearling, a Redoute’s Choice

(Danehill) colt out of blueblood mare Hades

(Encosta De Lago), had created headlines. With

just a handful of yearlings left to parade in front

of a packed buying bench, the focus had begun to

turn to the next day’s racing action and the sales-

restricted features, led by the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m). Continued on page 3>>

Among those focused on the Saturday

card at the Southport track, right across the road, were the Triple Crown

Syndications team, brothers Chris and Michael Ward. However, it was

after a drama-filled morning in which their Group 2-winning colt Charlie

Boy (Myboycharlie) had been ruled out of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

(RL, 1400m) with a hamstring issue, one that would eventually keep him

    sidelined until the spring.

He had been the $8 third favourite at the time he was withdrawn.

It was with that in mind that the brothers sat ringside as the last few

lots went through the Magic Millions ring.

Most eyes were on the first foal out of champion filly Melito (Redoute’s

Choice), Lot 560, who would develop into the Japanese Group 2 runner-

up Campbell Junior (Encosta De Lago).

    Enter Lot 565,

    a Snitzel (Redoute’s

    Choice) colt out of

    Group 3 winner Millrich

    (Rubiton), who had

    finished third to Flying

    Spur (Danehill) and

    Octagonal (Zabeel) in

    the 1995 Golden Slipper

    Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Millrich had already produced nine foals, including another Group 3

winner in Danerich (Danehill), but she died mere weeks after foaling her

Snitzel colt, leaving him an orphan.

When he walked with purpose into the sales ring, led by a handler

sporting a bright orange Marquee Stud shirt just before 6pm on a balmy

Queensland evening, it was not the first time that he had been paraded

before a hall of potential buyers.

He had been offered twice as a weanling; he was passed in for $55,000

on a $60,000 reserve at the 2013 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale

before he was part of a fire sale of Lee Fleming’s stock at that year’s Inglis

Weanling and Bloodstock Sale, where he was purchased for $45,000.

So when he entered the Magic Millions sales ring for the second

occasion, this time as a yearling, it was second nature to the laid-back bay.

Right out of the gates, he surpassed his weanling market value with

an initial bid of $100,000. Eventually, he ended up in the hands of Triple

    Crown Syndications for $120,000.

That Snitzel colt would be named Redzel and his feats, well-versed,

more than made up for the disappointment of Charlie Boy’s withdrawal. A

two-time Group 1 winner, Redzel became the first horse to win the world’s

richest turf race, The Everest (1200m), following up a year later to become

Australia’s second highest-earning racehorse of all time.

“It was simply amazing; the life experiences we all shared cannot be

replicated anywhere else,” Chris Ward told ANZ

  • Bloodstock News yesterday. “When Mike

and I purchased him from the Magic Millions, we had high hopes for

him but you couldn’t dream up what he ultimately achieved. The Everest

didn’t even exist at that stage.

“To be a part of his journey was incredible, from watching him

dominate on the racetrack to seeing his name and the red Triple Crown

colours up on the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge was pretty

surreal. At his peak, he was arguably the best sprinter in the world. Our

Triple Crown motto is ‘Live The Dream’ and Redzel epitomised that ethos

    for our owners.”

For the first time since that 2014 sale, though, there is no Redzel in

the stable, the veteran sprinter earning a well-deserved retirement after

finishing third in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick in April.

That means, for the Ward brothers, the hunt is on for the next potential

Everest winner - a search that continues in earnest next week at this year’s

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that different measures

have had to be taken in order for the Sydney-based brothers to participate

    in next week’s auction.

“The Covid curveballs have continued so we continue to adapt our

approach,” he said. “This is something that the industry as a whole has

done particularly well to date and we will continue to do for a little while

    yet.

“With Sydney’s Northern Beaches declared a Covid hotspot, we

abandoned most of our Christmas to New Year break and hit the road to

the Southern Highlands and Hunter Valley to continue on from our pre-

Christmas inspections. We have just had to do our homework earlier this

year and conduct more on-farm inspections so we are fully prepared for

any logistical challenges that get thrown our way.”

The inspections have attracted large crowds as Sydney-based buyers

and agents have flocked to regional NSW in order to attend the Magic

Millions. For the Ward brothers, they have been taken by the quality of the

stock that is on offer in 2021.

“We have been really impressed by the catalogue that Magic Millions

have put together this year and the vendors have done an excellent job

in navigating their way through the recent challenges and are presenting

some really high-quality yearlings,” he said. “The Magic Millions is known

for attracting the early-going, precocious types and this year looks to be

    no different.

“Good horses come from all sales, but the Magics give you a month or

two head start which is ideal for those early two-year-old types.”

Last year, Triple Crown left with six purchases: Daichi (Maurice),

Artie’s Dreamtime (Flying Artie), Nullify (Epaulette), Northern Excel

(Exceed And Excel), Pole Position (Astern) and Crime Spree (Sebring).

Chris Ward is excited to unveil these horses over the next few months.

“The Magic Millions has always been a great source of success for us

over the years and we have a number of really nice youngsters from last

year’s sale just starting to come through now,” he said.

“They seem to be pleasing the Snowdens in their work and the next few

months will be really exciting. It’s like waiting to open your Christmas presents

to see what you have and we are just starting to remove the ribbons now.”

Magic Millions meeting looms for quartetProving just how potent the January sale has been for the Triple Crown

brigade is the fact their red and white colours will be carried by a number

of runners at the Magic Millions raceday on Saturday week, with Poetic

Charmer (Your Song), Misteed (Exceed And Excel), Smartedge (Smart

Missile) and Smart Image (Smart Missile) among the names bandied about.

“The Magic Millions race day is a day where they really splash the cash

around for the owners,” he said. “Most races are worth either $1 million or

$2 million and there is even a maiden race worth a quarter of a million so

it’s a great opportunity for the owners to get a good return.

“We look like we will have a number of runners there on the day.

Poetic Charmer is being aimed at either the Magic Millions Cup or Magic

Millions Snippets and Misteed will tackle the Magic Millions Fillies &

Mares race. Smartedge will contest the Cup, he has run really well in the

race the last two years; both times, he was held up and he finished just a

length and three-quarters from the winner.

“Then we have the highly talented Smart Image who has been targeted

at the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas. Thanks to striking a heavy

track last start, he is at some risk of not gaining a start in the race but if he

does, he has a big chance of winning it. In fact, all of our runners will be

going in as live chances which is exciting for our owners.”

Smart Image is perhaps the most promising of the Triple Crown

quartet as a winner of three of his five starts, remaining unbeaten away

from a wet track, and in a number of ways he is reminiscent of Redzel early

    in his career.

There is already a striking parallel between both Redzel and Smart

Image in that their respective sires - Snitzel and Smart Missile (Fastnet

Rock) - both won the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m), while their dams -

Millrich and Shared Reflections (Umatilla) - took out the Sweet Embrace

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). In fact, if not for Smart Missile’s shock withdrawal

at the gates in 2011, both sires and both dams would have contested the

    Golden Slipper.

Despite both Redzel and Smart Image possessing a precocious

pedigree with both winning as juveniles, another similarity is that both

have been given time to excel beyond their

    AUSTRALIA

Bowditch happy ahead of Magic Millions Magic Millions CEO Barry Bowditch is pleased

with how preparations are going for next

week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

and expects the majority of Australia's major

bloodstock players to be in attendance, despite

the Covid-19 restrictions in place. Currently,

individuals are able to attend if they’ve been

outside a declared Covid hotspot for at least 14

days and Bowditch is confident most industry

participants have made plans that will allow

them to visit the Gold Coast for the sale.

“Under the circumstances, everything is going

    reasonably well,” Bowditch told Racing.com

yesterday. “We’re trying to move with whatever

restrictions are being put in place but things are

quite calm at the moment, horses are arriving

and inspections will begin tomorrow. There

were three farms in the Greater Sydney area

that were able to move their horses and staff

out and they’ll be able to get in (to Queensland)

the middle of this week. Every other farm

from all over Australia can arrive as they see

fit. When the announcement was first made, a

lot of trainers and buyers left Sydney and have

obviously spent their time in a rural area at

farms looking at horses or holidaying with their

    families on the way up.”

Three for Proven on MM Raceday Proven Thoroughbreds will send three runners

to the Gold Coast for Magic Millions Raceday

on January 16, headlined by Gotta Kiss (Not

A Single Doubt) who will aim to atone for the

unfortunate circumstances which led to her

12th-placed finish in the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) last year. A float break-

down pre-race meant she was one of four

horses who arrived late on course and was

rushed to the gates without barely having had

a stretch of the legs, while the other three late

arrivals also raced poorly. Syndicate manager

Jamie Walter is looking for redemption this year

with Gotta Kiss lining up in the Magic Millions

Guineas (RL, 1400m). "It was a total disaster

last year," Walter said. "We had well and truly

run our race before they jumped and we're

hoping for a bit more luck this year. She's a

high-class filly who was Group 1-placed behind

Rothfire. The 1400 metres will suit but I think

she's certainly capable of running a mile later

on.” Proven Thoroughbreds’ other two runners

are Scallopini (Snitzel), who will line up in the

Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m), and Reckless

Choice (Choisir), who takes on the Open

    Handicap (1800m).

Guineas hopeful Isotope faces jump-out today The Magic Millions Guineas campaign of

Isotope (Deep Field) will be fine-tuned in a

Doomben jump-out today after Tony Gollan

gave her a week off following her impressive

Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) success

on December 19. "She had a week on the

treadmill away from the stable and she

enjoyed that," he said of the Magic Millions

Guineas favourite. "She's back in now and

ticking over quite well ahead of her jump out.

We're just taking things quiet and looking

after her. I'm certainly not worried about the

month between runs with her; if anything

you can do too much with them rather than

not doing enough.” Also competing at the

jump-out is Magic Millions Classic contender

Rhapsody Rose (Star Witness), who finished

third to Sweet Dolly (Real Saga) in the Calaway

Gal Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Eagle Farm on

    December 12. "I'm hoping that I don't have

to run her again on the Saturday before the

Millions," trainer Chris Munce said. “She's a

quality filly who just keeps on improving with

education and racing and she's very tough."

Classic favourite enjoys Rosehill hit-out The Chris Waller-trained She’s All Class (I

Am Invincible), the $4.50 favourite for the

Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 16,

enjoyed a quiet hit-out at Rosehill yesterday

morning. The filly, who landed the Magic

Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m) by four

and three-quarter lengths last month, sat just

off the leaders and was given an easy time

by Kerrin McEvoy. She’s All Class finished

    a half-length behind fellow I Am Invincible

(Invincible Spirit) filly Total Babe, with

    Avaricious (Extreme Choice) another two

    lengths back in third.

More Waller stars on show Fellow Waller-trained stable companions

Kolding (Ocean Park) and Star Of The Seas

(Ocean Park) also enjoyed quiet trials at

Rosehill yesterday ahead of the Expressway

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on January 30, which is

the first-up target for both geldings. Kolding,

who was last seen finishing 13th in the Cox

    Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), finished a comfortable

fifth in his 900-metre trial, a length behind

Aquitaine (Exceed And Excel). Star Of The

Seas lined up in the following 900-metre

heat and finished last of nine under a tight grip

from Kathy O’Hara. The six-year-old was two

and a half lengths behind the winner, Tailleur

    (Shooting To Win).

  • TOSEN STARDOM - FIRST YEARLINGS SELLING 2021| 10 |

Capitalist filly impresses in trial The Peter and Paul Snowed-trained Satin

Ribbons (Capitalist) caught the eye in her

first official trial at Rosehill yesterday,

defeating the field of eight by five lengths

    under Robbie Dolan. Two-year-old Satin

Ribbons, the third live foal out of Group 2

winner Satin Shoes (Flying Spur) - the dam

of Listed winner Satin Slipper (Pierro) - was

keen throughout the 900-metre trip, but

that did not prevent her quickening nicely

down the straight to set the quickest time of

    the morning at 53.92s.

Estijaab’s brother secures second trial success Remarque (Snitzel), brother to 2018 Golden

Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Estijaab, won

his second trial in as many attempts at

Rosehill yesterday and looks an exciting

prospect for Team Hawkes. The two-year-

old colt, who defeated impressive maiden

winner Ranch Hand (Fastnet Rock) - who

    subsequently became ANZ Bloodstock

News Maiden Of The Week - by a length

on his first trial last month, showed a nice

turn of foot to put three and three-quarter

    lengths behind himself and runner-up

    Chameleon Choice (Extreme Choice) in

the 900-metre heat. Remarque is the sixth

foal out of dual Group 1 winner Response

    (Charge Forward)

Rain delays Enthaar's return The cancellation of Cranbourne’s jump-

outs yesterday morning put paid to the

    reappearance of Enthaar (Written Tycoon),

who is the current favourite for the Blue

Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Golden

Slipper. The Ciaron Maher and David

    Eustace-trained Enthaar, who won the

Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) by three

lengths on debut in October, was entered for

    an 800-metre two-year-old jump-out but the

session was scrapped due to wet weather. The

Cranbourne Turf Club have rescheduled the

jump-outs for today on the Polytrack, while

the next turf jump-outs at Cranbourne will be

    on January 11.

Tycoon to follow Sunlight path Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes will follow the

    tried-and-tested path of Sunlight (Zoustar),

who won the 2018 Magic Millions 2YO Classic

seven days after an easy win at the Gold

Coast, with Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m)

    winner Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon).

After two appearances on the Flemington

straight, Finance Tycoon will tackle a bend in

a race for the first time in the 1100-metre 2YO

Quality Handicap on Saturday, before lining

up in the Classic a week later. The training

partners are keen to get some experience

of the track into him before the main target

on January 16, for which he is a general 20-1

    chance.

Late call on King Of Hastings target Anthony and Sam Freedman are keeping all

options open as they plan the destination

for the next run of King Of Hastings

    (Ilovethiscity). The four-year-old gelding,

who finished unplaced in the Christmas

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on Boxing Day,

has been nominated for four outings

    on Saturday; the Chester Manifold

    Stakes (Listed, 1400m), a restricted

1300-metre contest at the Gold Coast

and two Benchmark races at Randwick.

Racing manager Brad Taylor said the

stable were keen to keep their options

open, however a flight to the Gold Coast

leaves on Tuesday night. “No decision has

been made,” Taylor told Racing.com. “The

travel to Queensland is a question, then

there’s the weather in New South Wales

and that’s an issue because their tracks

are already heavy. The weather forecast for

    Queensland isn’t great either. There’s a

few factors for everywhere, to be honest.”

On his Boxing Day reappearance behind

    Pandemic (Sepoy), Taylor added: “He

came through the run the other day well.

He was probably half a run behind where

we thought he probably was. We had an

interrupted preparation with a small virus

earlier in the preparation. We are happy with

him now so hopefully he can bounce back

    to winning form.”

I Am Vinnie heads to Manifold The David and Coral Feek-trained I Am Vinne

(I Am Invincible) will line up in the Chester

Manifold Stakes on Saturday and the six-

year-old gelding will be aiming to break his

Flemington duck, having failed to win or place

in his six career runs at the track. I Am Vinnie

landed a Benchmark 78 contest at Randwick

last month and the trainers are confident the

addition of blinkers this preparation will help

turn his Flemington form around. I Am Vinnie

is one of 14 entries for the Chester Manifold

Stakes but the field size may reduce, with plenty

of other options available to runners.

‘She could hold her own anywhere, wherever she went’Dwayne Dunn believes Jamie Kah has the

talent and personality to thrive under the

pressure that is attached to being one of

Australia’s leading riders. Kah opened 2021

with two trebles on January 1 and 2 and now

leads the Melbourne jockeys premiership by

11 wins over Damien Oliver. “She’s got the

right personality to, she’s very laid back. She’s

always had the ability to be the first female to

be Victoria’s leading rider,” Dunn told RSN927.

“She has got a very good attitude, not much

flusters her. She transfers that to the owners

and trainers pre-race and post-race. The game

changes a bit now. She starts to get in the hot

seat, the rest of the other jockeys in the field

will start to watch where she is. Once you

are the tall poppy, everyone is looking at you

in a different light.” Dunn is keen to see Kah

test her ability in international races and is

confident she can thrive against the world’s

best riders. “The ability and talent she brings

to the track no doubt needs to be seen around

the world. She could hold her own anywhere,

    wherever she went,” Dunn said.

Long-term Cup aim for Persan After being the first locally-trained horse home

in the 2020 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m),

Persan's (Pierro) sole focus for this year will

be another tilt at Australia's most famous race.

they are conscious not to rise too much in the

    Melbourne Cup weights. The four-year-old,

who finished fifth behind Twilight Payment

(Teofilo) in November, will be aimed at the

Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800 metres)

at Flemington in May, with the winner earning a

golden ticket to the Melbourne Cup. "It's a nice

race to focus on for him. He's still a lightly-

raced stayer and we think he'll be even better

this year," Eustace said. Persan only carried

51 kilograms and Eustace added: "Obviously if

he had carried 56 kilograms, he wouldn't have

finished in that position. We've got to be careful

that he doesn't have to carry a weight such as that.”

Impecunious none the worse after Saturday scratching Impecunious (Sacred Falls), who was kicked

by a rival horse and subsequently scratched

at Caulfield on Saturday, is none the worse

for that incident and is set to return to the

racetrack next month. The promising three-

year-old, who made a big impression when

winning her Australian debut by two and a

quarter lengths last month, did not sustain an

injury at the weekend. “She’s OK, just some

bruising thankfully,” Natalie Young, who trains

in partnership with Trent Busuttin, told Racing.

com. “She’ll go out for a two week let-up and

she could be back at the races next month.”

Progressive Moreno heads to Rockhampton Improving sprinter Moreno (Charm Spirit) has

won five of his eight starts since joining Mackay

trainer Wayne Pomfrett and the talented four-

year-old will try to keep the good run going

when he makes his first start at Rockhampton

    tomorrow. Pomfrett bought Mareon from

Trojan Bloodstock following a brief career in

Sydney with champion trainer Chris Waller and

he found the gelding to be very immature when

he first entered his stables having been tried

in races between 1400 and 1600 metres. “He

was a skinny type and not very mature when

he first arrived in my stables,” Pomfrett told

Racing QLD. “He’d been racing with a Norton

bit and some other gear but the first thing I did

was take them all off and add a tongue-tie."

Moreno struck immediate success with the

new gear change at his first start for Pomfrett,

winning a Benchmark race over 1100 metres

in September. “The only other thing I’ve done

with him is keep him around 1000 to 1200

metres," Pomfrett added. “He was racing up to

1600 metres in Sydney but I think he’ll make a

fair horse over something a bit shorter. I’m still

working him out but he seems to be growing

    into a very nice horse.”

Clarke ‘improving all the time’ Julie Murray, a close friend of Udyta Clarke,

has issued an upbeat bulletin on the popular

trainer, who continues to recover from a life-

threatening brain bleed. Clarke was initially

listed in a critical condition after she was found

unconscious at her Cranbourne stables in late

November, but she is now in a rehabilitation

ward at the Casey Hospital. “She’s up doing

physio sessions every morning now and getting

stronger by the day,” Murray told Racing.com.

“She still gets pretty tired but she’s improving

all the time. Her intelligence and memory is

as it was, she’s lost nothing and she can have

longer conversations now. It’s amazing to

think how much she’s improved in six weeks

and hopefully if she continues to take the right

steps, the doctors will think about a timeline

for her heading home.” Murray has also been

liaising with staff that are feeding and caring for

Clarke’s horses, all of which have been spelled

    at her Cranbourne property.

SA jockeys fined over Saturday clash Two South Australian jockeys have been fined

for misconduct after they were involved in

a verbal altercation in the jockeys’ rooms at

Gawler on Saturday. Caitlin Jones and Anna

Jordsjo were both charged under AR115(1)(a)

following an inquiry after the running of race

five. After taking evidence Jones was charged

with misconduct by directing foul language

towards Jordsjo. Jordsjo was also charged

for her use of language towards Jones. Jones

pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 with $500

suspended for 12 months, while Jordsjo was

fined $500 with the amount fully suspended for

12 months. Jordsjo on Fay’s Joy (Lago Delight)

pushed forward and shared the lead with Jones,

who was riding Exalted Queen (Crackerjack

King). Exalted Queen would then go on to lead

before finishing fourth, while Fay’s Joy was well

    beaten in 13th.

Stewards hit Spain with handling charge Stewards have issued Zac Spain with a

handling charge regarding his ride on Island

Empress (Ocean Park) in race three at Moe on

November 19. The rule states that a rider must

take all reasonable and permissible measures

throughout the race to ensure the rider’s horse

is given full opportunity to win or to obtain the

best possible place in the field. Stewards allege

that from approximately the 500-metre marker

Spain failed to maintain a position trailing the

eventual winner To The Barricades (Fighting

Sun) when it was reasonable and permissible

to do so, and instead shifted Island Empress

back to the inside fence near the 400 metres

where there was not clear running. It is also

alleged that from approximately the 250-metre

marker, Spain failed to shift Island Empress out

in an attempt to obtain clear running when it

was reasonable and permissible to do so, and

as such his horse was held up for the entirety

of the home straight. The charge will be heard

by the Victorian Racing Tribunal on a date to be

    fixed.

King and Maskiell cop Sunday suspensionsLachlan King has been suspended for eight

meetings after breaking the whip rule at

Benalla on Sunday. King used his whip eight

times prior to the 100-metre mark when

riding The Brightside (Keep The Faith) in race

six. King pleaded guilty to the charge, with

his suspension starting on Sunday night and

expiring at midnight on January 12. He was

also fined $200. Stewards took into account his

guilty plea, totality of his whip use and good

record in relation to this rule. Meanwhile, Jason

Maskiell was also suspended at Sale on Sunday

for careless riding in race three. Maskiell

permitted his mount to shift out while riding

along near the 50 metres and was not clear of

Cautamente (Fastnet Rock), tightening the run

Maskiell pleaded guilty and was suspended for

eight meetings from January 10 to midnight,

January 17. In assessing penalty, account was

taken of his guilty plea, good record and that

the carelessness was in the low range.

Moruya Cup rescheduled for January 14Races six, seven and eight on yesterday’s

card at Moruya were cancelled due to wet

weather and the state of the track, which was

deemed unsafe for racing. As such, the $75,000

Moruya Cup (1425m) has been rescheduled

and added to the Moruya meeting on January

    14. Nominations were reopened and horses

    accepted yesterday remained as nominations.

Further nominations will close at 11am on

    Friday, January 8.

    NEW ZEALAND

Springsteen makes impressive return Springsteen (Stratum) made his long-awaited

return to the racetrack a winning one when he

ground out a stirring victory over 1300 metres

at Otaki yesterday. Trained by Johno Benner

and Hollie Wynyard, the four-year-old had not

been seen since finishing last behind Dragon

Leap (Pierro) in the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2,

2100m) at Ellerslie last February, with a pair of

unplaced runs at the Foxton trials in September

his most recent public appearances. However,

he stripped fit in the hands of Lisa Allpress,

who had taken out the previous event on his

    promising three-year-old stable companion

Montre Moi (Showcasing), hitting the front with

100 metres to run and holding on by a short-

head. “He had a decent break after he jarred up

badly when he ran in the Avondale Guineas,”

Benner said. “He also needed gelding, so we

got all that done and put him away to let him

mature for his next campaign. We gave him a

couple of trials in September on wet tracks, but

he just wasn’t quite right so we put him out for

another three weeks and then got him ready for

the good tracks. I wasn’t too sure how he would

go today, but when I saw him in the birdcage,

he looked fantastic and raced accordingly. He’s

a much stronger horse now, so we will look to

step him up over more ground in the next wee

while. I just can’t wait until he gets to 2000

metres as I think he is a very good stayer in the

making and will go through the grades.”

Tavi Mac Telegraph boundAllan Sharrock has confirmed progressive five-

year-old Tavi Mac (Tavistock) will make his

next outing in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Trentham on January 16. The son of Tavistock

(Montjeu) has won his last three races,

culminating in a comfortable victory in the

Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at

Awapuni last month. Nicknamed ‘Frodo’ due

to his unique stature, Tavi Mac has pleased

Sharrock with his recovery from his latest

exertions. “He’ll run in the Telegraph next,”

the trainer said. “He’s bounced back from his

last run, put body weight on and worked on

the course proper this morning (Monday) like

a caged lion. He’s got a massive job ahead of

him to beat the mare (Avantage) but there was a

Seabiscuit movie, so maybe there might be one

about little Frodo.” The Jamie Richards-trained

Avantage (Fastnet Rock) took out the Railway

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie last week and is

the defending champion in the Telegraph after

defeating Enzo’s Lad (Testa Rossa) in 2020.

    Mac’s half-sister makes winning debut Meanwhile, Tavi Mac’s half-sister - the Darci

Brahma (Danehill) filly Darci La Bella - made

a winning debut at Otaki yesterday. “They

are both very talented individuals, but she

definitely got the looks in the family,” Sharrock

said. “Neither of them are that big, but he’s

called Frodo for a reason whereas she is a

beautiful filly to look at.” Although not sighted

publicly at the trials prior to her debut, Sharrock

had been confident of a good performance

from his charge as she had shown him plenty

in her jump-outs back at New Plymouth.

Jockey Ashvin Goindasamy made good use of

an inside barrier draw to hustle Darci La Bella

to the lead where she controlled the tempo to

the home corner. Goindasamy shot her clear

at that point and despite second favourite Meg

(Sebring) making a spirited late challenge, she

held on nicely to collect the victory. “Based on

what I’ve seen at home she is definitely a better

chaser than she is a leader,” Sharrock added.

“We had the good barrier today so we wanted

to make use of it, but as she progresses up the

grades, I definitely think she will be better

ridden with a sit. I’ll take her along quietly but

if she does what I think she is capable of then

a race like the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes

might be a target for her in the autumn.” The

victory provided Sharrock with the middle leg

of a winning treble after The Lost Boys (Ocean

Park) opened his account on debut in race two,

before Alhambra Lad (Proisir) notched his first

    victory later in the day.

    INTERNATIONAL

FR: Dual Group 2 winner Headman retired to Figerro Breeding Farm Dual Group 2 winner Headman (Kingman) has

retired from racing and will stand at Figerro

Breeding Farm in Saône-et-Loire, France this

year. The son of Kingman (Invincible Spirit)

was trained by Roger Charlton to land four of

his nine starts including the Prix Eugene Adam

    (Gr 2, 2000m) and Prix Guillaume d'Ornano

(Gr 2, 2000m) at three in 2019. An impressive

debut winner on the all-weather at Newcastle

as a two-year-old, Headman also struck in

the London Gold Cup (1m2f) at Newbury,

following in the footsteps of the fellow

    Charlton-trained and Juddmonte-owned Time

Test (Dubawi). The five-year-old is the sixth foal

out of the winning King's Best (Kingmambo)

    mare Deliberate, a half-sister to five-time top-

level winner Flintshire (Dansili), who stands

at Hill 'N' Dale Farm in Kentucky, plus Dance

Moves (Dansili), a dual Listed victor for Andre

Fabre. Headman will stand for a fee of €2,800

    (approx. AUD$4,450).

US: Pegasus World Cup invitees announced Last year’s winner Mucho Gusto (Mucho

Macho Man) is one of 16 invitees to the US$3

January 23. The five-year-old is one of two

chances for Bob Baffert, who also landed

Also included among a total of 12 Grade 1

or Grade 2 winners to be invited is Breeders’

Cup Dirt Mile (Gr 1, 1m) winner Knicks Go

(Paynter), who has secured three consecutive

victories since being switched to Brad Cox.

The third running of the Pegasus World Cup

Turf (Gr 1, 9.5f ), introduced in 2019 to serve

as a companion race to the Pegasus World

Cup, will also take place on the card. Included

among the entries are a trio of contenders for

Todd Pletcher, who has won 16 of the past 17

championship meet titles at Gulfstream Park.

He could be represented by Largent (Into

Mischief ), Social Paranoia (Street Boss) and

    Colonel Liam (Liam’s Map).

US: Newlyweds seek changes to archaic betting ruling Newlywed jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Katie

Davis have expressed their dismay at a ruling

by the New York State Gaming Commission

which demands that mounts of the duo

competing in the same race must be coupled,

also known as bracketed, with punters unable

to place wagers which distinguish between the

individual horses. The jockeys, who married

last month, were unaware of the rule change

until informed ahead of a recent meeting at

Aqueduct racetrack in New York. The couple

fear trainers or owners may use alternative

jockeys to avoid their horses being coupled.

“It is 2021, and you shouldn't be able to stop

people from making a living," Davis told

Bloodhorse. “Trevor is worried it might affect

his business, and if it does it could come down

to me choosing to make a living or not and that's

not fair. It's not the 1800s anymore. The rule

needs to be changed. We are very competitive.

We don't give each other a shot. We're both

trying 150 per cent when we ride against

each other.” The New York Racing Association

operates Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga

racecourses but is not the regulator and any

rule change would need to be made by the New

    York State Gaming Commission.

UK: Cheveley Park Stud owner David Thompson dies at the age of 84David Thompson, who along with his

wife Patricia built up one of Britain's

    most important breeding and ownership

operations in Cheveley Park Stud, has died of

renal failure at the age of 84. The Thompsons

    purchased Cheveley Park outside

Newmarket in 1975 and have developed it

into a major power on the Flat, standing a

number of influential sires including Pivotal

(Polar Falcon), and enjoying Classic success

at home and abroad with 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1,

    1m) heroine Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo)

and Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) winner

    Confidential Lady (Singspiel). David and

    Patricia Thompson also famously purchased

1992 Grand National winner Party Politics

    (Politico) shortly before his triumph.

    BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU

    It’s a long way from winning a

Rockhampton maiden to a good quality

Class 3 in Macau, however, it proved no

bar to the former Queensland galloper

Famous Medal (Benfia), who overcame a

tough run from his wide gate to bolt away with

    Saturday’s Class 3 over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Peter Ho, the Patrick Lee-

prepared gelding worked hard to cross from

his wide gate alongside race favourite Winter

Typhoon (Canford Cliffs) to share a three-way

    battle for the lead.

Once in the straight, the bay gelding

bounded away for an easy two and a quarter

length win over Thar (Exceed And Excel) with

Electroplate Alloy (Golden Archer) in third.

Famous Medal, who was named Beach

Road in Queensland, was originally prepared

by Clinton Taylor. The gelding had won a

barrier trial at Yeppoon over 900 metres before

stepping out in a two-year-old maiden at

Rockhampton over 1200 metres back in July.

Sent out at odds of 9/1, the gelding did a

nice job coming from the tail of the field to

win by half a length at the line. That said, given

    that the runner-up Oswana (Whittington)

took another five months to break his maiden

status, it’s certainly not the type of form that

would have you knocking over punters to get

on in Saturday’s race, where he was moderately

supported by connections to jump at 8/1.

    A son of T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Benfica (Lonhro), Famous Medal is

out of the Chateau Istana (Grand Lodge) mare

Glisten. The mare plied her trade around the

north Queensland tracks winning a Townsville

maiden. Famous Medal is a nicely put together

individual and only three years old; judging on

Saturday’s victory, it’s onwards and upwards for

the gelding and his owner Chan Yu Hau.

From a future viewpoint, the run of Derby

hopeful Beauty Bolt (Redoute’s Choice) was

an eye-catcher. The former Victorian filly, who

was good enough to run fourth in the VRC Oaks

(Gr 1, 2500m) behind Miami Bound (Reliable

Man), was running on strongly in the straight

before running into a brick wall, and went to

    the line untested.

Peter Ho commenced the New Year with

a bang, booting home three winners for the

    afternoon to take riding honours.

Ho combined with trainer Wayne Smith to

win the first race for 2021 with the very promising

Pursuing Eagle (Holy Roman Emperor), who

easily accounted for his rivals in a handicap

for three- and four-year-olds over 1200 metres.

It was win number three for Pursuing Eagle

from ten starts to date, and his run time of

1:09.30 suggests better days are ahead.

Dare To Be (Nadeem), prepared by Stephen

Chow, showed plenty of fight under Ho to cling

onto victory by a neck in the Class 6 over 1500

metres, then had to continue the battle in the

stewards’ room, after Luis Corrales - the rider

of the second placegetter Master Paradise

(Charge Forward) - fired in an objection.

After hearing all the evidence, the stewards

panel headed by Australian Zane Turner

concluded that, whilst there was a shift outward

at the 100-metre point by Dare To Be resulting

in both horses brushing together, considering

the manner in which both horses were finishing

off the race and the beaten margin, they could

not be satisfied that Master Of Paradise would

have finished in front of Dare To Be.

Ho now sits in equal third spot with Roger

Yu on 13 wins for the season, with Corrales

leading the charge on 18 victories, from Eric

    Cheung on 14 wins.

Hong Kong reject Arriba Arriba (Denman)

made it two wins from two starts in the enclave

with another easy victory in the Class 4 over

    1200 metres under Corrales.

Prepared by Allan Tam, Arriba Arriba

was backing up off his easy debut win from

December 12 and was sent out at the prohibitive

odds of $1.20. He sat off early leader River

Applause (Hidden Dragon) until the top of the

straight before racing away to win by almost

    three lengths in comfortable fashion.

Raced by Rick Ma, a long-time stable

supporter of Tam, Arriba Arriba was originally

a cheap buy for Aquanita Racing at just

AUD$28,000 at the 2017 Gold Coast Magic

    Millions Yearling Sales.

The gelding found his way to Hong Kong

and the stables of Chris So, where he showed

speed before weakening to be beaten eight

lengths in Class 4 over 1000 metres. The gelding

was found to have suffered a bleeding attack

and eventually found his way to Macau.

In Saturday’s win, the gelding looked first

class and will have no trouble in reaching the

    higher grades.

    Stephen Chow’s For Community (Jimmy

Choux) continued on his winning way with an

all-the-way win in the last of the day, the Class

4 (Division 1) over 1200 metres under Brazilian

    rider Dayversom Barros.

For Community made it win number five

for owner Lau Yiu Tong when he made light

winner over Smart Arrow (Smart Missile),

with Northern Legend (Northern Meteor) in

New first season sire winnersDivine Prophet - Aquis Farm’s first season

sire Divine Prophet (Choisir) sired his first two-

year-old winner at Morphettville on Boxing

Day when the Will Clarken-trained Bleriot (2 f

ex Jetting To London by Jet Spur) won the two-

year-old plate (1050m). After twice finishing

runner-up, Bleriot won the $52,250 race by

three quarters of a length over Elteecee (Pierro)

with Cassowary (Stratum Star) another two

and a half lengths away in third. Connections

of Bleriot also collected an additional $160,000

from Aquis Farm for winning a Saturday

two-year-old metropolitan race prior to 2021

Magic Millions race day. He was purchased by

Clarken and J S Bloodstock Consultancy for

$160,000 from Aquis from the Book 2 session

of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

last year. Divine Prophet, who stood for a fee of

$22,000 (inc GST) at Aquis Farm in the Hunter

Valley in 2020, has 12 lots catalogued at the

    upcoming Magic Millions sale.

Frosted - Darley shuttler Frosted (Tapit)

brought up his 18th winner but just his

second in the southern hemisphere when

Frost Flowers (2 f ex Itameri by Exceed And

Excel) scored impressively at her first start

at Flemington on New Year’s Day. Ridden by

Jamie Kah, the Anthony and Sam Freedman-

trained Frost Flowers was utterly dominant

in her defeat of Tayla’s Moment (Shalaa) and

I Am Enchanting (I Am Invincible), with the

    one-and-a-half-length margin perhaps not a

true measure of her victory. Frost Flowers is

the fourth foal to race and the fourth winner for

Itameri (Exceed And Excel) and looks likely to

follow in the footsteps of her older half-brother

Hanseatic (Street Boss), who finished second

    New Group/Grade 1 winnersAnimal Kingdom - Duopoly (3 f ex

    Justaroundmidnight by Danehill Dancer)

proved triumphant in her first start at the

highest level, winning the American Oaks (Gr 1,

10f) at Santa Anita on Boxing Day by two lengths

    to provide Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux)

with his third individual elite-level winner.

Trained by Chad Brown, the three-year-old

showed the way throughout under Flavien Prat,

defeating Going To Vegas (Goldencents) into

    second, with favourite Sharing (Speightstown)

finishing two and three-quarter lengths behind

the winner in third. Animal Kingdom, winner of

the 2011 Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f), is standing

privately at the Shizunai Stallion Station in

    Japan in 2021.

Just A Way - Danon The Kid (2 c ex Epic

Love by Dansili) took out the Hopeful Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) at Nakayama on Boxing Day

to provide Just A Way (Heart’s Cry) with his

first elite-level winner. The Takayuki Yasuda-

trained Danon The Kid, who is unbeaten from

three starts, saw off Orthoclase (Epiphaneia)

by one and a quarter lengths. Yoho Lake (Deep

Impact) was a further half-length behind in

third. Just A Way, a triple Grade 1 winner under

the care of Naosuke Sugai, has 153 winners

from 265 runners, with seven of those being

stakes winners. He was crowned Japanese

champion freshman sire in 2018 and stood at

Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of 4,000,000 JPY

    (approx. AUD$50,200) in 2020.

Savabeel - The consistent Roger James

    and Robert Wellwood-trained Concert Hall

(6 m ex Classix Legacy by Carnegie) broke

through at the highest level on Boxing Day

when taking out the Cambridge Stud Zabeel

Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie to become

the 21st individual Group 1 winner for her sire

Savabeel (Zabeel). The six-year-old mare, who

was runner-up in the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr

1, 1600m) at her previous start, defeated Supera

(Savabeel) by a long neck with In A Twinkling

(Fastnet Rock) another long-head away in

third. Savabeel stood at Waikato Stud for a fee

of NZ$100,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

    Speightstown - Charlatan (3 c ex

Authenticity by Quiet American) pulverised the

Malibu Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) field at Santa Anita on

Boxing Day, notching a four and a half-length

success over Express Train (Union Rags) to

provide Speightstown (Gone West) with his

    20th individual elite-level winner. Returning

to the races for the first time in almost eight

months, Charlatan turned what was billed

as an exciting showdown with favourite

Nashville (Speightstown) into a dazzling solo

performance as he drew away from Express

Train in the straight, with Collusion Illusion

(Twirling Candy) a further half-length behind

in third. Nashville could only finish fourth of

the six runners. WinStar stallion Speightstown

is the sire of 120 stakes winners and will stand

Street Boss (Street Cry) with his seventh

elite-level winner when landing the La Brea

Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Santa Anita on Boxing

Day. The Godolphin homebred was sent off

an outsider but rallied down the straight to

win the three-year-old fillies event by two and

a quarter lengths, securing her first Graded

victory. The Bob Baffert-trained pair of

    Golden Principal (Constitution) and Merneith

(American Pharoah) finished second and third

    respectively, with favourite Finite (Munnings)

well beaten in fourth. Darley stallion Street

With his first northern hemisphere-bred crop

having just turned three, American Pharoah’s

stakes winners are topped by top-tier victors

Harvey's Lil Goil and Van Gogh, the latter

having been crowned Cartier champion two-

year-old colt following his four-length success

in the Criterium International (Gr 1, 1600m)

at Saint-Cloud. American Pharoah has 22 lots

catalogued for the upcoming Magic Millions

    Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Better Than Ready - Better Than Ready

(More Than Ready) produced his fifth

individual stakes winner when Apache Chase

(3 g ex Silken Whisper by Diesis) took out the

Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on

    Saturday. The Desliegh Forster-trained gelding

beat Gotta Kiss (Not A Single Doubt) and Oscar

Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Apache Chase is the

Fastnet Rock - Coolmore’s Fastnet Rock

sired another stakes winner, his 167th in total,

when Rocket Spade (3 c ex Affairoftheheart

by Fusaichi Pegasus) took out the Auckland

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s

Day. Trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew

Scott, Rocket Spade beat Jason Belltree (Ferlax)

and On Display (Showcasing) as he registered

his second win in five starts. Purchased for

$425,000 at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale, Rocket Spade is the first black-

type winner out of the stakes-placed mare

    Affairoftheheart (Fusaichi Pegasus), a half-sister

to dual Group 1 winner Soriano (Savabeel) and

Group 3 scorer Kaiser Franz (Savabeel). Fastnet

Rock stood for a fee of $165,000 in 2020.

    I Am Invincible - Yarraman Stud’s I Am

Invincible (Invincible Spirit) sired both his

61st and 62nd individual stakes winners over

the festive period. Victory number 61 came

courtesy of Vamos Bebe (4 m ex Hurtle Myrtle

by Dane Shadow), who took out the Hallmark

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Boxing

Day. Trained by Jamie Richards and owned

by Trelawney Stud’s Brent, Cherry and Faith

Taylor, Vamos Bebe defeated runner-up Vigor

Winner (Declaration Of War) by half a length

with Madam Hass (Per Incanto) another three-

quarters of a length away in third. A sister to the

dual Group 3-winning colt Holyfield and out of

the Group 1-winning mare Hurtle Myrtle (Dane

Shadow), Vamos Bebe was a $200,000 purchase

by agent Paul Willetts from the Segenhoe Stud

draft at the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling

Sale. On New Year’s Day, I Am Invincible

sired his 62nd individual stakes winner when

Imperatriz (2 f ex Berimbau by Shamardal)

got the better of her more fancied rivals in the

Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Ellerslie. One

of three in the race for Jamie Richards, she beat

the Tony Pike-trained Stormy (Telperion) with

the Richards-trained favourite Sword Of State

(Snitzel) in third. Purchased for $360,000 at

last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale, Imperatriz is the first foal to race out of the

    Group 2-placed mare Berimbau (Shamardal).

Into Mischief - Fresh off securing a second

straight title as North America’s leading sire,

    Spendthrift Farm’s Into Mischief (Harlan’s

Holiday) recorded his 84th individual stakes

winner when Life Is Good (3 c ex Beach Walk

by Distorted Humor) took out the Sham Stakes

(Gr 3, 1m) at Santa Anita on Saturday. Won

by trainer Bob Baffert with eventual Kentucky

Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and Breeders’ Cup Classic

(Gr 1, 10f) hero Authentic (Into Mischief) last

year, Life Is Good also comes from the Baffert

barn and entered the Sham Stakes having won

a maiden at Del Mar in November. Sent out the

shortest of short-priced favourites, Life Is Good

was hardly asked for an effort by Mike Smith as

he led from pillar to post; even with stablemate

Medina Spirit (Protonico) bearing down fast,

it was still a comfortable three-quarter length

margin at the finish, with a further 13 lengths

to Parnelli (Quality Road) in third. Life Is Good

is the first stakes winner from two foals to race

out of Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) mare

Beach Walk and comes from the same family

    Makfi - English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m)

the Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer training

(Gr 2, 2000m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.

Sporting the colours of race sponsor Kevin

Hickman, Needle And Thread finished four and

a half lengths clear of Lily’s Lady (Contributer)

who just edged out Il Affare (Dundeel) in the

battle for second. Needle And Thread is a sister

    AUD$27,600).

    Nathaniel - Darby Racing’s European

(Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day. He

was also the 22nd stakes winner for Newsells

two second placings this campaign to win the

Group 3 race, defeating Best Of Days (Azamour)

and Black On Gold (Sebring). Spirit Ridge, who

won twice in the UK before being secured by

Darby Racing, won his first Australian start on

the Kensington track at Randwick in May before

fee of £15,000 (approx. AUD$26,500) this year.

    Savabeel - Waikato Stud flagbearer

Savabeel (Zabeel) has been in red-hot form

in recent weeks. Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2,

    1600m) winner Amarelinha (3 f ex Hopscotch

by O’Reilly) - an ANZ Bloodstock News Maiden

of the Week - became the 108th individual

stakes winner for Savabeel on Ellerslie’s Boxing

Day card, only two races after the champion

sire had Brando (3 c ex Saoirse by Iffraaj) take

out the Uncle Remus Stakes (Listed, 1400m)

to post his first victory at stakes level. The pair

are trained by Te Akau Racing’s Jamie Richards.

Savabeel was one again among the feature race

winners on New Year’s Day when Savy Yong

Blonk (5 m ex Ampin by Pins) finally made the

breakthrough in stakes company with a victory

in the City Of Auckland Cup (Gr 3, 2400m),

becoming the 109th individual stakes winner

for the son of Zabeel (Sir Tristram). Bred and

stood for a fee of NZ$100,000 (Plus GST) in

    2020.

Sepoy - Pandemic (4 g ex Cataclysm by

Marauding), a half-brother to Blue Diamond

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Earthquake

(Exceed And Excel), broke through for an

important stakes win in the MRC Christmas

Belle Of The Turf Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at

Purchased by Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for
