Hello everyone, It is that time of year again to give you a brief overviewof what has been happening in our business. Last year’s ram sale wasvery pleasing, with some of our most exiting rams bred to date ondisplay, Neil 190009 broke our personal best wool cutting record, with acut of 16.4kg with 7.5 months of wool with 19.3micron, also Masterbuilt190171 Big Dave displaying his virtues of 141kg, with lambs teeth atthe open day in September who still cut 11.5kg in 7.5 months, with bothsheep well exceeding our target wool cut of 1kg per month. These ramsare both in our semen catalogue along with our other sires.

With lambs being dropped as of the 1 st of June they look to have very silky skins and a goodoutlook, there future looks bright. Our open day shearing displays where also a highlight, displaying what our sheep can do out in the paddock, from weaners with 11 months wool toewes rearing lambs with 7 months wool. Commercial client’s sheep shorn and cutting between8 and 13 kg which is very pleasing to see.

The sale went off very well, with lots of stud purchases and the commercial clients returningand supporting us extremely well again. This was very pleasing for me and the Banavie team, itis good to see our genetics being spread far and wide. Myself, Karina, kids and the Banavieteam have been working at improving and growing our business, by purchasing the balance ofthe Banavie land and Stud, with Roger still being involved in breeding, classing, semen salesand any other tasks where he is needed. This has been our plan for the past 18 years.

Dad and I have had a long working relationship which continues to be strong. Dad is anexcellent mentor and sounding board for myself, he is incredibly supportive of this and ismaintaining a financial interest in the stud for the next few years, we believe this will be asmooth and exciting transition for Banavie’s future. Banavie and Charinga’s open day will stillbe combined at Banavie, the combined sales continuing to be held at Charinga on the firstMonday in October.

We have been continuing our work on the A.I and E.T programs with results continuing tospeak for themselves, with one program on the ground and the next due shortly. We are in the process of building a new ram shed and have also purchased a new datamanagement program to help organise our raw data (mothering, weights, fleece cuts etc) forsheep genetics, but more importantly have the data live and up to date in the sheep yards, formore informed decisions. We are looking forward to implementing this as a tool with ourongoing traditional visual classing.

Commercially sheep operations continue to be exiting and profitable, with wool prices firmingsince covid early last year, and the finer end continuing to strengthen.

With lots of lambs making $180.00 plus and culls and old ewes consistently making $230.00plus after a lifetime of productivity. We must continually remember our investment into ourgenetics in 2021 will impact our 2023 breeding stock, so set your goals now and reap therewards for years to come. We look forward to seeing you all. Thanks,

Tim Polkinghorne

2020 Sale Ram Report

Facemasks and border restrictions didnt prevent strong bidding from stud and commercialclients Australia wide to ensure our 2020 ram sale was a success. We offered and sold 80 rams toa top price of $12,000 at an average of $3670. A challenging year for promotion at field dayslead us to photographing and videoing all sale rams to give them some exposure prior to sale, this coupled with a live feed through Auctions Plus on sale day certainly worked well and wethank those of you who supported our sale through the online bidding platform and who pur-chased rams in most cases sight unseen or on the recommendation of one of our stud team oryour trusted sheep classer or agent.

2020 was the first year we had Charinga Neil (170009) sons in our sale lineup and they did notdisappoint. They all have extremely loose skins producing extreme staple lengths with density. We have retained 4 sons for our own use in the stud and a further 7 rams sold in the auction to atop of $10,000 at an average of $5428.

It was the second year of MASTERBUILT progeny on offer and they were equally as impressive.Masterbuilt has imprinted his size, structure and correctness. His progeny are safe and consistent.Masterbuilt had 20 sons in this years sale which is a credit to his consistency. The top priced ram was lot 69 a 333 Grandson with a rich quick growing wool. He made $12,000and was knocked to Warren Gully WA. The top priced horn ram offered was lot 71 making $5000to Mt Ascot Merino Stud, Mitchell QLD. He is a Pearler 200 grandson who stands proud andcorrect.

“My association with Banavie goes back to when Neil McLennan owned Banavie in the mid 1990s andwhen the Polkinghorne family took over we continued to use both Charinga and Banavie Studs. Wehave purchased and used semen from their top sires. The use of their genetics has influenced ourwool quality and quantity. Described by Roger as “One of the best skin sheep ever seen on Banavie”, this young ram wasanointed with the “009” tag number, as a tribute to his father. This ET bred sire is as exciting asany Poll bred at Banavie in recent times. The genetic combination does not get much better thanthis... His Sire “Charinga Neil” and his mother is ET bred from Banavie royalty, being a “Rifle”(130303 $30,000) daughter, by 110016, which is $60,000 130333s mother.

009 has super soft richly nourished pearly white wool. He is loaded with fibre due to hisoutstanding fibre alignment, which consists of deep horseshoe shaped crimp which wheninspected carefully folds completely back onto itself. This highly elastic fibre is beautiiflycyilindrical, allowing it to grow extreme staple length and super staple strength within highlycompacted fibre bundles creating true density. His high secondary to primary fibre ratio, createsa low suint and high wax nourishment which will protect the fibre in all climatic extremes.

Equally as important, that along with his extreme skin, 009 presents with a strong constitution. He has a pure open face, big barrel, and stands tall with a proud outlook. He has strong bone inhis legs with excellent length in the cannon bone and correct feet and pasterns. 009 is from oneof the heaviest wool cutting families in Australia, his fibre quality and production comes from hisfather and his structural soundness, make and shape come from his mother, he will go on andmake a meaningful impact to both stud and commercial flocks throughout the industry and weare very proud to call him a Banavie.

This Magnificent Sire is the result of years of selection all coming together in a singlegenetic package. Selected by Roger at lamb mothering as the one “we must keep an eyeon”, 266 has grown and developed into the exceptional sire he, through years of ET and AIhas ultimately been selectively bred to become. A combination of virtues from Big Tom,Pearler, Jonty and Buddy genetics have all combined to produce this super star.

His father “Gilbert”, was prepared and managed in the Banavie ram shed in 2018 and thisram has many of the old boys great attributes. He has a genuine presence in the ram shed,he holds his head high and proud. He is quick maturing and already has a big broadmuzzle like his father with a sires hornset. His growth rate is exceptional due to his heavybone, length of body and perfect structure. His wool is bold deeply crimping, withexcellent thickness and lock. It is richly nourished, well aligned fibre which pushes wool cutproduction on an uncomplicated pliable skin.

We look forward to watching the impact this ram has on the Merino industry and thecontinuation of the “Gilbert” family which is held in high regard at both Banavie andCharinga.

John alsohas strict selection criteria for his annual sireselection, with only the very best sires suited to hisbreeding objectives selected to take him forward.Johns Orana bred sheep often attract greatsupport at store sales during the spring, due to theamount of repeat purchasers that just want to gettheir hands on them again.

We thank John and Dianne for your continuedsupport and urge you to inspect some of theirprogeny at our inspection day, they truly are a spectacle.

From our Stud Advisor, Andrew Calvert I have always believed if you’re in the business of producingsomething to sell then its vital whatever the article is it needs toremain relevant to the market. Breeding animals to sell is nodifferent, they need to be both relevant and commercially viable. The ultimate determiner in a Studs business is its clients, in simpleterms if they are successful, so should the Stud supplying thegenetics be. Banavie have been bred along these objectives forover 100 years, the principals understand the responsibilities theyhave as a leading supplier of Seedstock to the Merino Industry.

I am strongly focused on breeding sheep that are structurallysound, efficient converters capable of achieving good cut tomicron, their wool should be soft and nourished. Fertility is criticalas is a good carcass. One of the real positives of the Banavie type is

its dual-purpose attributes, they are also ideally suited to shearing 3 times in 2 years or every 6months. With the current wool market this can offer huge financial benefits.

Focus on ewe nutritionlifts production for Greenaway familyArticle courtesy of Stock and Land, Thursday 20th August by Kylie Nicholls

A targeted approach to ewe nutrition is helping to lift Merino lambing percentagesand flock productivity on the Greenaway family farm at Beazley’s Bridge.Trading as Bernarro Partnership, Nigel Greenaway takes care of the 900-hectaremixed farming operation with his brother Daniel, father Bruce and their families. Theycurrently run a self-replacing flock of 1500 Merino ewes, crop between 200 to 400haannually and grow out 3500 pigs under contract.

Traditionally running Merinos, the Greenaway family made a change to first-cross eweproduction using Dorper rams to produce prime lambs. But despite success with thisprogram, they decided to return to breeding Merinos about six years ago.“We could see where the market was heading and noticed the lack of Merino ewesand decided to take a punt and change back to Merinos,” Mr Greenaway said.“Big first-cross ewes and crossbreds also require a lot of feed and we wanted to bemore efficient.

“I think you can always rely on a Merino, even if the wool market is down you stillhave the wether lamb and mutton market so you are still profitable, if you look afterthem, they’ll look after you.

“I also really enjoy the challenge of breeding and improving them, it is always veryrewarding.”

Mr Greenaway believes quality genetics play a significant role in boosting flockproductivity and has been sourcing his rams from the Polkinghorne family’sBanavie/Charinga stud at Marnoo since changing back. Their flock averages 20micron with an annual wool cut of eight to 10 kilograms per head.“We quit the Dorper-cross ewes in one go and bought several lines of four-year-oldBanavie/Charinga-blood ewes and have bred our numbers up from there,” he said.“We don’t concentrate too much on micron and are just trying to grow big, boldcrimping, heavy-cutting bale fillers.

“Well-nourished wool is also very important as we have a lot of sandy loam countryand graze our stubbles through the summer and nourishment helps to prevent any dust getting in the fleeces.”

“We’re more than happy to pay a premium for the ram that is correct for us as it flowsthrough your entire flock.”

After grazing stubbles through the summer, the ewes are drenched, vaccinated andjoined in on-farm containment pens for six to eight weeks from February 1 onwardsto lamb in July and August. About 200 to 300 ewes are fed per pen and a joining ratio of 1pc is used.

The Greenaway family have been joining in containment for many years and areachieving good fertility and lamb survival results, with the ewes scanning at about150 per cent and weaning at about about 125 to 130 pc, although Mr Greenawaybelieves this figure can be improved.

“The containment pens save us time and money, we only have one water source tocheck and we can feed our sheep in one to two hours per day which is far moreefficient than driving tractors and utes around the farm,” he said.“Maintaining the ground cover in our paddocks is important, which is why we like tohave them in containment as well.“We get good feed conversion as the ewes don’t eat as much because they’re notwalking it off and it also looks after the rams.”Silage, hay and straw produced on-farm is fed in the pens which ensures minimalwaste and utilises surplus fodder. Mr Greenaway aims to make at least 1000 bales ofhay and silage each year as a buffer against drought.“We cut a lot of silage and hay as a tool to clean up our paddocks and it works wellfeeding silage in containment, and we don't have any of the health issues associatedwith feeding grain,” he said.Pregnancy scanning is also carried out during their containment with Mr Greenawayscanning for singles and twins as well as early and late lambers.“I split the mobs up this way for ease of management and it helps to manage feed ina lean year,” he said.“The late lambers can be left in containment for an extra month so the paddocksdesignated for them during lambing can get ahead a bit, it gives us more flexibility.”The lambs are weaned at the start of October, and shorn in January with the wetherlamb portion turned off as quickly as possible.“We don’t try and grow them out, we sell them just off shears or keep them for a bitlonger, depending on where the market is and how much surplus feed we have.“We aim to sell them at 20 to 25 kilograms carcase weight and if we can get acontract over the hooks, we’ll go with that as then you know what price you aregoing to get.

Any surplus ewe lambs are sold as rising 1.5 year-olds in October and Novemberready for joining with last year’s draft selling for $272/head through AuctionsPluswhich Mr Greenaway was pleased with.

Founded in 1915, the McLennan family worked to establish Banavie as one of few true foundation studs, selling genetics throughout every

state in Australia and internationally. For over 60 years Neil continued the work of his father Dick, to develop the Banavie type.

Renowned for having strong bone, excellent wool density and elite wool quality the Banavie type is easily distinguished in stud families and commercial flocks across Australia. Since purchasing Banavie in

2001, we are pleased to see the continued impact and industryinfluence the Banavie type is having.
