National Exercise Referral Scheme – Health for Life

What is 'Exercise Referral’?

The 'Exercise Referral' scheme is designed to aid individuals, who have been identified by their

Health Professional, to gain health benefits through taking part in enjoyable exercise.

When referred to the scheme, you will receive a lifestyle consultation and an individual activity

programme designed specifically to your needs. You enter the scheme for 16 weeks with regular

contact from a qualified exercise professional. During the 16 weeks on the scheme, activities

within our leisure facilities will be charged at a concessionary rate of £1.

How do I get on the scheme?

1. Visit a health professional, such as your General Practitioner, Practice Nurse, Physiotherapist

or Dietician who will then complete a referral form on your behalf to determine if you are

eligible to take part.

2. A member of the Active Living Team will then contact you to organise a convenient

appointment for your first consultation.

3. Your first consultation will consist of a full explanation of the scheme and a general

assessment of current health and wellbeing.

4. A programme will then be created to suit your personal needs.

5. Over the 16 weeks, your personal programme may include group or

individual activities depending on what you would like to do and what you

are able to do.

What kind of Activities can I do?

Here is just a taste of some of the sessions we currently provide:

Exercise Referral ‘Gym Session’ – The gym session is a chance to attend the

gym at a designated time (only exercise referral patients can attend), with one

of our Physical Activity Facilitators. The session is an opportunity for clients to

ask questions and gain confidence with friendly support. Here are two quotes from patients who have attended

the sessions:

“Never thought that I would like the treadmill, I thought you had to run”

“It wasn’t what I was expecting, the exercises were fun and enjoyable”

Walking - We provide a number of walking opportunities in Blaenau Gwent, ranging from 20 to 30 minute

health walks, community walks to longer more strenuous walks.

Gentle Exercise - An exercise class based on fun and enjoyment, using a variety of equipment and exercises to

assist everyday functional tasks. Very gentle.

Chair Exercises - Gentle exercise based on movement and flexibility to build on functional capacity.

Aqua - A cardio and toning class that works against the resistance of the water. Suitable for all levels.

Swiss Ball - A total body toning class which focuses on your core body strength.

All above classes/sessions are catered for individual needs, abilities and levels. Within our timetable of classes

we incorporate a link between referral classes and community classes so there is a progression in opportunity,

ability and fitness.

What our Client's have said:

John age 59 from Tredegar

“I feel better physically and mentally, and now feel that gentle exercise is embedded into my normal lifestyle”.

Phyllis, aged 72 from Ebbw Vale

“Excellent scheme, the support, encouragement and help I received was first class. I feel revitalised and healthier”.

This programme is aimed at improving the standards of Physical

Education in curriculum time. There are four development centres in Blaenau Gwent based around all

primary and comprehensive schools in Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar.

One of the main aims of the programme in the next 12 months will be the introduction of the new Play to

Learn programme, which will help aid of physical development within the foundation phase.

5x60

The 5x60 programme is extending the work of Dragon Sport into comprehensive schools. The programme

looks to increase and improve young people’s participation in sport and physical activity by engaging young

people in different ways.

In Blaenau Gwent all comprehensive schools are involved in the scheme undertaking sport and activity in

many different forms, including dance, dodgeball, aqua club, martial arts, basketball and many others. Boys’

sports are also offered in girls only sessions and football and cricket have proved to be very popular.

YOUNG PEOPLE

The Young Leaders Programme is becoming an important part of the

sports development programme and is helping to develop our coaches

and organisers of the future.

The programme is broken down into three main parts. The Sports Leader Level 1 award, which is run in all

comprehensive schools and offered to year 10 pupils. In 2009 over 100 pupils passed this award. Not only did

they gain this award but they also helped organise and run many of the Dragon Sport festivals. This award is

supported by 14 to 19 Learning Pathways.

Step two is for those who have already passed the award. In return for volunteer hours they can gain starting

out coaching awards from several National Governing Bodies including netball, cricket, rugby and football.

Finally, we have an Engage Leadership programme where up to 20 young people, who have already passed

their Sports Leaders Level 1, give 150 volunteer hours in return for further coach education and opportuni-

ties to develop their coaching skills.

Blaenau Gwent has now received Outreach Status from Sports Leaders UK and further courses are held in

the holidays for people to obtain their Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership. This course will be

run two or three times during the year, depending on demand.

We are now looking to help these young people to start coaching in our community clubs. Over the next year

links will be made with community clubs to get these young coaches more involved.
