Close Up’s programs are a perfect mix of travel, learning, and fun!
INSTRUCTION: Unlike tour organizations, we use trained Program Instructors, not contracted tour guides, to provide students with rewarding and fun experiences. Students learn valuable lessons that complement their history classes back home.
EXPERIENCE: Since 1971, over 800,000 students and teachers have participated in our one-of-a-kind programs. Close Up has partnered with Katy ISD schools since 1985.
IMPACT: Our proven curriculum and teaching methods will educate and inspire your students. Our programs are designed to align with each state’s social studies standards.
TRAVEL: We use major U.S. airlines for your travel.
HOTELS: We use national hotel chains such as Marriott, Sheraton, and Holiday Inn. Our hotels are in safe and vibrant neighborhoods close to the sites that you will visit.
MEALS: Beginning with dinner on your arrival day, we provide students with 3 hearty meals per day.
LIABILITY: We have a $26,000,000 policy to protect you and your school. We provide secondary health insurance and specialized access to Georgetown Medical Center, should medical care be needed.
SAFETY: Your safety is our #1 priority – from the time you travel here until you arrive home. We provide full supervision including night monitors at each hotel.
KATY ISD: Close Up is the only district-approved, curriculum-based travel program for Katy ISD schools.
For over 40 years, Close Up’s instructors have utilized a unique teaching method to appeal to virtually all students.
Our participants come from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Puerto Rico, and numerous countries around the world. More than 94% of alumni say that Close Up helped them better understand their roles as citizens.
We work closely with teachers, administrators, parents, and students nationwide, as well as with long-standing partners and funders such as the U.S. Congress, the Department of Education, the Department of Interior, the Freedom Forum, C-SPAN, the Center on Congress, and Bank of America. We are also approved by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Additionally, we fulfill our mission through classroom teaching tools. The most notable is Current Issues, in its 38th edition, which is relied on by teachers to stimulate classroom debate on key policy issues.

P Formed in 1971, Close Up is a non-profit that exists to educate and inspire young people to participate in our democracy. We fulfill our mission with exciting, hands-on civic education programs in and around Washington, D.C. Using historic sites and cities as living classrooms, we give students access to the people, processes, and places that have impacted our lives and government today. Over 800,000 students and teachers have participated in our experiential programs, and countless more have appeared on our TV show and used our textbook Current Issues to debate hot topics in classrooms nationwide.
