WELCOME LETTER

he idea behind PharmaVOICE — both

magazine and online — created a forum for leaders to Read. Think. Participate. in the dynamic life-sciences industry. From molecule to market, PharmaVOICE has been providing the perspectives and insights of passionate and committed thought leaders for nearly 15 years.

On the way to an industry trade show, about three years after the launch of PharmaVOICE, we were stuck in the Philadelphia airport. During what turned into a very, very long delay, we began talking about the people who we were scheduled to meet, how inspired we were by the work they were doing, and the difference they were making in the industry. Like the start of so many great innovations, one brainstorming idea led to another, and upon landing at our destination the following morning, we had also landed on the concept of the PharmaVOICE 100.

So with an idea that started with a special publication that long ago August to celebrate the individuals behind the companies, products, brands, tools, and services that benefit patients worldwide, we have now recognized more than 1,000 of the industry’s most inspirational leaders from all sectors of the industry.

We view ourselves as a convener — as evidenced by the tagline of our

T publication: The Forum for the Industry Executive — which is why this inaugural Celebration event is so special and exciting. We have the opportunity to bring together and recognize in person the men and women — the PharmaVOICE 100 and Red Jacket honorees — who are impacting change throughout the life-sciences industry and who inspire so many people every day.

We have enjoyed getting to know each and every one of the honorees over the years, and we look forward to their inspired leadership for years to come.

On behalf of everyone at PharmaVOICE, I want to thank all of our generous sponsors and attendees who made this event possible.

We are proud to donate a portion of the proceeds from the event to Reach Out And Read, which prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.

AGENDA

FEEL DEEPER. We have a lot of heart for what patients and customers go through when it comes to their healthcare. How do we know how they feel? We dig deep to find out. We engage with them honestly and through real connections we uncover how they feel inside. Their fears, concerns, and sometimes complete disconnection from their own health. Deep down in their hearts patients want to feel that healthcare companies and providers “get them.” Sometimes brand promotion and cool tactics aren’t enough. For clients looking to find new ways to engage customers, we also create unique content to help them connect with their customers on a more meaningful level.

xecutives who boldly transform their company’s talent operations to be as innovative as their business strategy see dramatic, measurable improvements in their company’s performance and ability to accelerate

growth, according to a recent report from PwC.

EInspired ResultsBy viewing their people as assets on their balance sheet, and by aligning business goals with the talent strategy needed to achieve them, companies can see 75% higher revenue growth, 77% better strategy implementation, and 85% stronger financial performance overall, according to PwC’s Project Management Institute, Talent Management - State of the Market report. They also attract and retain employees not just as bright new hires but as future leaders.

Talent innovation rethinks and transforms previously siloed processes into a unified talent ecosystem, integrating designs to create a whole greater than the sum of each part, ultimately built to advance a company’s business strategy, accelerate business performance, and cultivate a modern workforce that’s diverse, engaged, and delivering on its goals.

With today’s ever-shifting market forces and the battle for talent proving

fiercer than ever, the time for talent innovation is now. Innovating a talent strategy to fuel business priorities can drive measurable performance gains at every stage of execution, including:• 70% improved process

turnaround times• 30+% lower turnover• 20% improved

productivity• 15-25% HR operations

savings• 30% uptick in innovation

ideas.As part of PwC’s annual

CEO survey, results show a definitive shift in the level of concern among business leaders worldwide over the impact of skills shortages on their business, in spite of a market increase in business confidence. Three-quarters of all CEOs ranked it as the biggest threat to growth — a 10% jump from last year and a 46% increase from six

years ago. The survey also found

that people with strong technology skills are particularly sought after — an indication of

how the digital world is changing the workplace. But business leaders are also looking for adaptable people — talent with a wide range of skills and the willingness to keep learning and apply what they know wherever and whenever they’re needed.

PwC analysts say what is clear is that organizations can’t rely on recruiting people as they’ve always done in the past — they need to look in new places, geographies, and from new or alternative pools of talent. In other words, companies have to think outside the box.

they do it? They set stretch

They engage in highly

INSPIRED LEADERS

“Chief Want”Carmine Gallo, a columnist for Forbes, wrote recently that one-third of U.S employees are so unhappy they are thinking of leaving their jobs. He poses

the question: how is it possible that unhappy, unmotivated, and disengaged employees could possibly offer exceptional customer service or develop exciting, innovative products that move your brand forward? Mr. Gallo responds they can’t, that’s why it’s up to company leaders to satisfy what he says is a person’s “chief want;” someone who will inspire employees to be what they

know they can be.Mr. Gallo outlines

seven qualities that he says all inspiring leaders share: ignite enthusiasm, navigate a course of action, sell the benefit, paint a picture, invite participation, reinforce optimisim, and encourage potential.

In a recent Harvard Business Review article, Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman discussed

what top executives want from their leaders (see side bar). They report that according to an IBM survey of 1,700 CEOs in 64 countries, the three leadership traits that most mattered were the ability to focus intensely

on customer needs, the ability to collaborate with colleagues, and the ability to inspire.

These experts also turned their attention to

the question of whether leaders could learn to become more inspiring. To find out they did another study of 882 executives from data collected over the last three years, who were measured on 16 different competencies and encouraged to focus efforts on improving one of them. Focusing on the 310 who chose to improve their ability to inspire others they found that

as a group they made impressive strides — moving from the 42nd percentile (that is, below average) to the 70th percentile. This is a statistically significant positive gain, and compelling evidence that when leaders use the right approach they can learn to become more inspiring.

In other words, Mr. Zenger and Mr. Folkman say with awareness, good feedback, and a plan of development, leaders are able to improve this most important of all leadership competencies.

Inspired Leadership

In the continually evolving life-sciences environment, leaders need to keep an open mind, listen carefully to their marketplaces, and understand the needs of the patients their companies ultimately serve. Therefore, it is

more important than ever for leaders to inspire their team members to achieve their professional goals, thereby ensuring sustainable success for their organizations.

“Talent development is a critical component within my own company,” says Deborah Dunsire, M.D., CEO, FORUM Pharmaceuticals. “I believe that as a leader if you don’t develop the next generation of leadership, you are putting your company’s future at risk.

It’s an absolutely critical business priority to ensure that you have a pipeline of leaders in development all

the time.” When it comes

to her personal inspirational leadership style, Dr. Dunsire says as a

leader you don’t have to be perfect, but each day, you need to be better than you were the day before and if you keep doing that, you can build greatness into people

and organizations. For Jeffrey Aronin, founder,

CEO, and chairman of Marathon Pharmaceuticals, inspired leadership is about setting a vision.

“My leadership style is to hire very talented people, put them in roles where they are able to have creativity and freedom, and clearly define the mission so everybody is aligned,” he says. “I like to think I offer a clear vision as to where the company is going. People know their role, but they also recognize what everybody else

is doing and we all hold each other accountable.”

Leerom Segal, co-founder and CEO of Klick Health and author of the best-selling book The Decoded Company, believes that teams do amazing things when they are inspired by challenges that they believe in and when the right team is in place.

“The most important thing we do as an organization is obsess about our culture,” he says. “For the past 18 years, we’ve been on a quest to figure out how to best build a center of gravity for

brilliant people. My belief is that if a company can get the culture right, it’s not just attractive to the right individual, but it also creates an environment where those people thrive, and when people are happy, they make your clients happy, and when your clients are happy, they reward you with loyalty and growth. This is a very virtuous cycle that shapes our

belief system. And of course, it’s easier said than done to operationalize this type of model and takes a lot of work.”

Along those same lines, Christi Shaw, U.S. Country Head, president of Novartis Corp. and president of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., says what really resonates with people is purpose tied to a deep sense of mission.

“It’s easy to get caught up chasing the bottom line, but I’ve found that you can only

Ms. Shaw nurtures an empowering culture of “leading at all levels.”

She is known for her willingness to continually challenge the status quo. She’s also a firm advocate for inclusiveness in the workplace. Ms. Shaw empowers her associates to speak up and encourages employee engagement, as she understands that an engaged workforce is critical to helping patients and ensuring business success.

Rick Keefer, global chief business development officer, Publicis Healthcare Communications Group, says he is probably like many leaders,

in that he doesn’t view himself as an inspirational leader, contrary to popular opinon.

“I’m happy that people are able to derive some inspiration from my approach, which is that whatever role you play or whatever area you operate in, the ultimate goal is to facilitate better healthcare for patients,” he says. “I think I’ve always done a good job of reminding people why we’re in this industry and that what we do — whether it’s developing a tool that allows patients to access better

communications or facilitate better dialogues or increase the educational stream — helps facilitate better healthcare; I think this helps give people passion and a common goal.”

Over the years, Alex Gorsky, chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, has found that developing personal relationships while creating an informal environment — one still held to high standards — engages and inspires people to do things that they wouldn’t think that they’re capable of doing on their own.

“Sometimes, there’s the belief that a leader can’t be informal and still have

high standards, and I think it’s just the opposite,” he says. “By creating an environment where people feel that they can be themselves, where they can speak up and speak out, and at the same time know that they’re going to be challenged in an inspiring way, they are willing to give their best, which ultimately allows me to make the best decisions.”

There are clearly discussions and decisions that leaders make every day, particularly in the space of healthcare, that require an incredible amount of

rigor, focus, and serious deliberation, he says.

“I think when the balance is

right — an inclusive environment where people don’t feel that they need to walk on eggshells, where they can openly speak their minds, where diverse opinions are welcome — I’m absolutely convinced that this ensures that all issues are brought into the discussion, are considered, and that again, ultimately, the right decisions get made,” Mr. Gorsky says.

Admittedly, he says this approach requires a lot of active engagement, and this is one of the natural dynamics of being a leader that can sometimes be intimidating.

Jeff Berkowitz, currently a board

member at Infinity Pharmaceuticals, is focused on the team and team dynamics.

“For me the team has always been the most important piece of what I do,” he says. “I like to surround myself with really good, really passionate people. I also have to believe in what I’m doing, I have to be passionate about it, and this translates to those around me.

“From a people perspective, I have been able to identify passionate and smart people who I know can go well beyond what it is that they’re doing on a day-to-day basis,” Mr. Berkowitz continues. “This is very motivating to teams; they know that as long as they’re doing good work and as long as they’re challenging the status quo, there are going to be opportunities for them within the groups that I lead.”
