Bereavement Book Group

Are you in the midst of the grieving process?

Do the scars from past grief still hurt?

Consider coming to 4 evening book group

sessions here at St. Mary Parish. We began last week

at 6:30 PM in the Gathering Space. Members got

their book and read the first chapter in Adoration. We

gathered again for 30-45 minutes to talk about our

reactions to the reading after Benediction.

Our book is Paula D’arcy’s

Winter of the Heart, Finding Your Way through the

Mystery of Grief.

This is a short book with deep meaning.

Please call Jim at the Parish Office or email him at

[email protected] with any questions.

The group is free but donations are gladly accepted to

defray costs.

Meeting Dates: October 27, November 3, 10, 17

6:30 PM Reading time and Adoration

Support Our Retired Priests:

Please consider a donation to Perpetuate The Gift Appeal. Your gift benefits our

retired diocesan priests and your Parish. Once a priest retires he is

responsible for his own personal expenses: medical, housing, car, clothing, and food. All funds

contributed between September 13, 2020, and December 31, 2020, help reduce the amount the parish contributes to the fund. A gift of cash or check

can be sent to: Perpetuate The Gift, PO Box 954,

Toledo, OH 43697 or placed in the parish collection. A gift may also be made online

Dear St. Mary Parishioners and Community,

This year has brought with it many challenges and uncertainties as we move forward in the midst of the

pandemic. Those challenges and uncertainties create a necessity for change, especially with school and accommodating new guidelines and regulations, but some changes can be made for future growth. This past weekend Fr. Paul unveiled the new parish logo, a lighthouse, as a symbol of the parish’s role of serving as a beacon of Christ’s light and how fitting of a change that is right now. The lighthouse is also a natural connection to the St. Mary School logo of the sailboat. Just as a sailboat, or any boat or ship, needs the guidance of a lighthouse in difficult, challenging weather, St. Mary School also looks to the parish as a guiding source of faith and hope to guide through challenging times.

Part of the change 2020 has brought is new school leadership, and part of the vision of the future of

St. Mary School is building and strengthening the parish-school relationship. The new parish logo is a wonderful symbolic representation of the relationship that the parish is a needed and trusted source of guidance both in challenging times and when it is smooth sailing.

With the unveiling of the new logo, Fr. Paul and I challenged our students to create their own concepts of

what the new parish logo and soon, what the all new parish-school logo, may look like. Another part of the vision of St. Mary School is the STEM designation and its permeation into the foundation of education at St. Mary School. Asking students to create their own unique authentic concept design of the logos is an excellent example of STEM practice. Students were posed a question and allowed the ability to create an authentic design on a medium of their choosing. Ultimately this is a type of activity that can help develop the four C’s of STEM: creativity, collabora-tion, communication, and critical thinking.

Another great, physical example that highlights the four C’s of STEM is the bottle cap mural in the gathering

space. This bottle cap mural was student-led, and created a unique solution to recycling bottle caps, which usually are not recycled and create landfill waste. Students led the collection efforts, designed, and collaborated on the mural. With guidance and facilitation from teachers and staff, students created an authentic piece of work that helped address a real-world problem. This was a great STEM (really STEAM-includes Art!) example.

I look forward to continuing to build a strong parish-school community and growing a foundation of

education firmly established with STEM skills. God Bless, George Mitchell, Principal
