The Fish Catcher

WELCOMENOTE

PDear Beloved Partners Tangan Pengharapan,

raise be unto God who is always with us and bless our lives, so that by His grace, we’re enabled to keep working for the better Indonesia

Thanks to our partners, we could distribute 2000 schoolbags to elementary and junior high students in Tangan Pengharapan’s Feeding & Learning Centers all over Indonesia. Thank you for supporting our livestock for children’s education program. We have built 5 pigpens in 5 villages in east Amanuban, south Timor Tengah, NTT. All fifth through ninth graders are going to take care of those pigs interchangeably and they will share the yields with every children to support their academic finance. Thank you for donating 1728 tooth brushes and 987 new clothes for chil-dren in Tangan Pengharapan Feeding & Learning Centers. We also thank you for donating 160 pieces of football uniform for 10 YTP kids’ football teams in east Amanuban, NTT. We also thank you for 1 unit of 3-wheeled- motorcycle for our Centers op-erational in west Kao, north Halmahera, north Maluku that will be used as a com-muter for children, logistic, water and groceries carrier. We also have sent skilled personnels to train the people in west Kao in order to make them get out of poverty. To anticipate prolonged dry season in east Nusa Tenggara, we train local people to build water storages so that they can still water their planta-tion. In our trip to Papua, we gave seminars and gave 3000 pieces of shirts and ties to the servants of God living in rural areas in Papua.

Computer Trainingin CRH Jakarta

Tangan Pengharapan opens computer training program for kids living in Jakarta Children Rescue Home. Thanks to this program the kids can have good computer skills needed for the future in the marketplace.

That afternoon Tangan Pengharapan de-cided to come and visit Lukas liunesi who

once suffered from kidney problem at his home. Tangan Pengharapan deliberately didn’t inform them about this visit since we wanted to give them a little surprise.“Dad!” Lukas Liunesi shouted out loud see-ing Tangan Pengharapan walking down to a plantation where Liunesi’s family were working.

The planting activity was paused because of Tangan Pengharapan’s sudden visit. Cheer-fulness appeared when Tangan Penghara-pan arrived at their plantation suddenly.

Lukas Liunesi:

Take a look at my plantation

Laughter was heard in that afternoon when Tangan Pengharapan was joking with Lukas in his family’s plantation. Lukas was helping both his parents. He kept watering the vegetables in the plantation tirelessly. Previously, Lukas wouldn’t be able to walk little further. let alone watering the plantation.

Before getting a help, a local doctor di-agnosed Lukas with kidney problem. He could only take plain water and white rice. If he ignored the doctor’s prohibi-tion, his fingers would get swollen and his stomach would be distended. His face would look pale.

Actually children at Lukas age surely need enough nutrition. But ironically, Lukas was not allowed nutritious meal and healthy drinks.

His parents once took him to a local hos-pital in So’E to get medical treatment. But because of lack of money, they took him home and Lukas attended outpatient care. Sometimes his parents bought some medi-cine for him and sometimes they didn’t. Whenever they had some money, they’d buy it for him, but if they didn’t, Lukas could do nothing.

It went for some time until one of Tangan Pengharapan’s partners who concerned about Lukas health condition. She, then, took Lukas to the hospital for medical treatment.

Months passed by, and now Lukas is get-ting better and better. His fingers are no longer swollen and his stomach is no lon-ger distended.

Even now Lukas is allowed to enjoy meals served in Tangan Pengharapan Feeding & Learning Center Tangan Pengharapan.

The harvest season this time is special be-cause it is the first time for Lukas Liunesi gets involved in reaping the crops. Spryly Lukas gathers the vegetables his parents reap for daily consumption and then they sold the extra vegetables to buy basic needs. Sonya Silubun

Deviana Esbapan, the 7 year old little girl, was leaning on a wooden chamber oc-

cupied by few families. Occasionally she glanced into the chamber. She could re-member the voice of her mother, saying “…take a good care of your siblings. I’ll return home after the sunset.”

Mama Devi, so people call her, everyday has to look for pieces of old unused iron to sell. To add her family income, she helps her husband who does traditional grass cutting in the office of the department of public works. Though the money they make is very insufficient, but they don’t quit.

From the look in her eyes, Devi wished she could’ve run to the ‘Rumah Belajar’ situat-ed besides the Merauke port. She believed her friends had gathered there to learn. This was another morning activity.

In the morning the ‘Rumah Belajar’ sup-ported by Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan was crowded with dropouts, illiterate and preschoolers who wanted to learn how to read and write, while their parents went to work as laborers in port nearby or any other places.

Better Life I 7 I Oktober l 2014

But today it seemed Devi had to bury her desire…. Sometimes she had to come with her mother and other wom-en on a pickup truck to swamp areas about 150 km from Merauke district to catch fish. When her friends of her age were studying, Devi had to catch fish out in the swamps with her mother.

They catch fish manually. All of fish catchers put their hands into the swamp, groping through the mud for fish the way Devi does, and if there is a fish, Devi catches it spryly. Then she shares the fish she catches with the pickup truck lessee.

Instead of bringing excitement, this work is very risky since swamp is a home to venomous snakes and leeches, not a home for a little girl named Devi-ana Esbapan.

“It’s much better being at school (Rumah Belajar).” said Devi, bowing her head. “My aspiration is to be a teacher just like Mama Ibu (a name given to a woman honored by local people).

Who can really understand what Devi wants? Poverty that traps her family forces her to be a laborer at her young age.

Being in the classroom with her class-mates makes her eyes glowing. That’s why Tangan Pengharapan in Merauke becomes a hope for Devi and her friends.

t was the first Tuesday morning of August. There were some unusual loud noises com-ing from Tangan Pengharapan facility in

Taehue hamlet , Mnela Anen village.Twenty five children wearing bright red colored batik uniforms were back and forth, playing and having fun because most of them already knew each other and they came from the same surroundings.Teachers and several parents were busy con-trolling their children in queue. Some children were leaving the queue and teasing their other classmates in the front or back line.“C’mon, let’s get together and remain in line before entering the classroom,” said the teach-er in the loud noises the children were making in their first school day. The sound of tambou-rine was heard, accompanying the children entering the classroom. And the attention of those who saw them off was distracted to the source of the sound. After queuing, singing and saying a prayer, the children were brought into the classroom where they introduced themselves and went to the classroom in accordance with the age group. They seemed to take the chance of learning given by Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan. For that reason, Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan opened two new classrooms in YTP’s School

I of Eve built last year.Tangan Pengharapan opened the new class-es since many people urged Tangan Peng-harapan to provide a qualified education with different approaches and nutrition im-provement.On last August 2014, Tangan Pengharapan’s preschoolers began to engage in society’s ac-tivities and commemorate the 69th anniver-sary of Indonesian Independence Day with race walk in east Amanuban sub district and 6 racers from different preschools took part in the event. The team consisted of twenty five children participating in Tangan Pengharapan’s Feed-ing & Learning Centers in Teluk Telukh, Tliu, Oenasi and Taehue villages. They took part in this event after few times of rehearsals.Through this competition, it is expected that the children’s spirit and sportivity may in-crease so that they can accept victory and defeat with a big heart.By showing a good spirit and self-confidence, a hope for a better life is again built on this land of Timor.AdolfSilubun

oday if someone doesn’t know how to operate a computer set, he surely will be

called an old fashioned, outdated and tech-nologically illiterate. And in marketplace, people are demanded to be able to use and operate the computer set because it is a mean to make job much easier and faster.

That afternoon when I was using my porta-ble personal computer and drinking a cup of coffee in my living room, few children came to me. They looked shy when I wel-comed them into my home. They are el-ementary and junior high school students. The school building where they study is situated not far from my home.

DelpiantiShow us how to operate the computer, Sir!

T “Is there anything I can help?” I began to ask them. Instead of giving me and answer, they just looked at each other. It appeared they would not open their mouth and answer the questioned I was asking. After few moments of si-lence, a girl aged around 15 took a step forward and began to ask me, pointing her finger at my portable personal com-puter on my desk right in front of me, “Sir, would you show us how to operate the computer?” The gild was Deplianti, a ninth grader at SMPN 3 Banyuke Hulu.

Hope was in their faces. It appeared to me that they need me to say yes to their want.

Few months ago, Yayasan Tangan Peng-harapan made a visit to its Education and Learning Center in Kampet village, west Kalimantan to see FLC activities there. Knowing that children in rural areas also need broad insight in order to know the outer world and follow the technological development, Yayasan Tangan Penghara-pan, then, gave 3 units of portable per-sonal computers.

This effort is considered helpful that more children know how to use and operate computers. As a result, Kampet villagers will not be old fashioned, outdated and technologically illiterate any longer. P. Rolianto

I smiled when staring at their curious faces. Soon, they were filled with happiness when I said yes. But because I only had one por-table personal computer, then I explained to them I was going to teach one of them and then she/he had to teach other kids. And they agreed and Delpianti got the first chance to learn how to use the computer.

Delpianti or Tetet is the latest of 6 siblings to Mr. Dasut and Mrs. Salia (deceased). Her mother died of serious illness when she was 3. Prior to living with her father and her other sibling, Tetet used to live with her eldest sibling who has a family of her own. Tete, once had to drop out of school for a year because her eldest sibling couldn’t af-ford to pay her school fee.

In learning how to operate the computer, Tetet is a fast learner. Though her learning activity was stopped once due to my por-table personal computer was failed, Tetet was eager to learn the theories, waiting for my portable computer to be repaied.

C ustom and tradition in Mentawai is-lands seems to give good impact on

women. When a man is proposing to a woman, he must spend lots of money in accordance with the custom and tradition for the land, sago, durians, coconuts, big casseroles, axes, machetes, and money in cash to be presented to the woman’s fam-ily. As a result, he often treats his wife as a housemaid, and the woman must work in their field, sell the crops, or catch some fish. meanwhile the husband is just wait-ing for his wife’s’ coming home, bringing some cigarettes for him.

When she gets divorce or when her hus-band passes away, the wife must return to her parents’ home, bringing nothing but the clothers she is wearing. And the cus-tody over children must be given to the husband’s family.

Such thing happened to Mr. Antonius and Mrs. Anjelina. Because of the problems they had, Mr. Antonius left his wife and his three year old daughter, Pokensia Me-liana and married again to another wom-an in another village.

Pokensia:“Why does dad never go home, mom?”

Better Life I 15 I Oktober l 2014

Betraying his wife, Antonius often spent the money he made on having an affair with another woman. He spent the mon-ey he should give to his wife to have fun with the woman he was having an affair with. And he did it quite often. He just bought some sago for their daily needs. And his wife had to meet other basic needs. In this difficult situation, Mrs. Anjelina had to raise Pokensia all by her-self.

In her age of 3 years old, Pokensia’s physi-cal growth was slow. She looked thinner compared to her peers in other places. Her belly was bloated due to intestinal worms. Not ony that, ulcers and skin de-seases often attacked her body since she was a baby.

Seeing this situation, her mother couldn’t do much. Because of lac nutrition, her physical thin mother got even thinner since she had to breastfeed her baby girl. Lack of nutrition causes women in Men-tawai look much older than their hus-bands although their ages are almost the same. Even some of the have the same age.

When Pokensia began to go to school, she had low sef esteem since all her classmates had their own fathers, while Pokensia only has a mother of her own. “Why does dad never go home, mom? When is he gone??” Pokensia asked her mother. Her mom remained speechless, being unable to answer the question.

When Pokensia was a sixth grader, her mother married again to a widower living in the same hamlet. Pokensia’s happiness for having a father like other kids lasted only for a while.

Pokensia’s life began to be disturbed. It seems that her stepfather didn’t accept her, so that when she graduated from the elementary school in 2008, she didn’t con-tinue her education until one of her aunts took her and sent her to SMP Lentera.

In 2011, Pokensia went to Lentera board-ing school. In this boarding school, Poken-sia can reach her aspiration to live a better life. The involvement of those who care about the life of children like Pokensia through Tangan Pengharapan has impas-sioned their spirit. E. Namakofa
