Instagram, Instagram, Instagram! - Shea McGee

6 years ago I found myself I loved it. working at an advertising agency that had no work for me, but needed a warm body in the office so it looked like they were busy. I spent my days reading design blogs. I just devoured the information and it was the first time that I realized I had a passion for design. So much so that I decided to start taking interior design classes at night.
2 years later and my husband and I buy our first home. It was a short sale a very generic Tuscan style tract home in Orange County. I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew it had big potential.
We moved in and within a week I was doing dishes in the bathroom sink while we tore out the kitchen.
This was before everyone and their mom was doing all white kitchens! It was a novelty in the neighborhood and neighbors kept stopping by to see the progress. Soon they started asking me to consult. I did. Cheap. Started making quite the little business.
Then we had our first baby Wren. 3 months later and my husband found himself out of work. So there I was with a newbown trying to turn my part-time hobby into something more.
I didnt have a website or any social media presence for my business, but much like my beloved generic tract homeI saw an opportunity. I signed up for an Instagram account and shouted about it to all 300 of my Facebook friends.
It worked so well that 2.5 years ago my husband and I decided to sell everything and start our design firm called Studio McGee together.
We now have hundreds of thousands of followers, a team of 30 and clients across the country.
I tell you this story because I started with 1 follower (my mom). And growing that following has been the single most important thing we have done for our business. Ive had some victories, made a few mistakes, and learned a lot along the way. Whether you are a designer who has a blog or a blogger who has a blog about design, I guarantee you that content marketing through social media, and specifically Instagram, is the single most important thing you can do for your business. Its not an exaggeration to say that instagram is responsible for 95% of our business. So how do you make it work for you? Shift your perspective.

The first step to using instagram to built your business and/or blog is to shift your perspect.
To get Instagram to work for you, its all about content marketing.
At first, creating and putting content out there can be quite counterintuitive.
The crazy thing about content marketing is that it has the exact OPPOSITE effect. When you give and give and give, you end up establishing yourself as an expert.
Ill share my favorite paint colors.
Build your own community.
You don't have to be everything to everyone. Assess the landscape and decide where you fit and what you have to offer.
I still do our instagram. Find your voice. Do you like to keep it short? Use run-on sentences? Are you funny? Serious? When you use the same words every other instagrammer in your market is using. You become one of many.
Get personal. Occassionally.
We're going to dive into these rules.
Take a class
Im a design school dropout that had no business succeeding in a traditional model, but social media changes EVERYTHING. It gives you the opportunity to show people the beauty you are capable of creating. Not committing is the biggest mistake you can make. Dont take breaks. Just keep going and youll figure out what your audience responds to. YOU CAN DO IT. Thats all I have for you today, but Im excited to take questions after this.
