Installation and Activation Guide

MAXQDA 12 Portable License

for Windows and Mac OS X

The portable license activates a portable

MAXQDA installation on one USB flash drive.

The flash drive needs to be connected to a Mac

or Windows computer in order to use the

software.

Customers install the software on their own

hardware and assume full responsibility for it.

A portable license makes MAXQDA a physical

item tied to the USB flash drive it is installed on.

Under no circumstances does VERBI take any

responsibility in case the MAXQDA license is not

available due to loss, theft or damage of the

USB flash drive the software is installed on.

General information about Portable Licenses

Installation on a USB flash drive

A Portable License is a special license, which is installed and activated on a USB flash drive. The installation on

computers, laptops or external hard drives is not possible.

Depending on how you would like to use your license you can install the Windows version, the Mac OS X version or

both versions on your USB flash drive. If you install both versions on one USB flash drive, it is sufficient to activate

only one of them to be able to use both. Please note that the flash drive must be connected with a Windows

computer in order to install the Windows version and with a Mac OS X computer to install the Mac version.

System requirements (USB flash drive)

Size: Please use a common USB flash (Removable Disk) with a minimum of 200 MB of free space. If you are using

the Windows and the Mac version on one USB flash drive, a minimum of 400 MB of free space.

Format: FAT / FAT32

Speed: A write speed of at least 10 MB per second is recommended if you wish to save and edit your project files

directly on the flash drive. If your project file is located on the host computer, the speed is irrelevant.

Encryption: Using an USB stick that is encrypted or has other protective mechanisms could lead to the portable

license not working correctly.

Installation

Installation of the Windows version

Download for Windows: www.maxqda.de/updates/12/MAXQDA12_Portable_Setup.msi

1 Download the setup file „MAXQDA12_Portable_Setup.msi“ and save it to your desktop.

2 Connect the USB flash drive to your computer.

3 Double-click on the setup file and follow the steps that appear on your screen. Please select the USB flash drive

as the installation directory. Please note that the installation process may take a few minutes.

Installation of the Mac OS X version

Download for Mac OS X: www.maxqda.de/updates/12/MAXQDA12_portable.dmg

1 Download the setup file „MAXQDA12_portable.dmg“.

2 Connect the USB flash drive to your computer.

3 Open the “Downloads” folder and double-click on the setup file. Drag the MAXQDA symbol onto the USB

flash drive (in a new Finder window or on the desktop) in order to start the installation. Please note that the

installation process may take a few minutes.

Gatekeeper: If the error message “MAXQDA 12 Portable for Mac is damaged. […] “ appears please allow Gatekeeper to accept applications downloaded from “Anywhere”. Follow these steps: 1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy 2. Under the heading “Allow apps downloaded from“: select "Anywhere". (If you are logged in as a regular user

(not an admin) you need to click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter the administrator password to make this selection available.)

3. Start MAXQDA again. Important note when using OS Sierra: The new operating system of Apple doesn't offer the option "Anywhere" anymore. When installing a portable MAXQDA license on a flash drive please follow these steps: 1. Open the downloaded dmg file. 2. Drag the app with the MAXQDA icon onto your Desktop. 3. Eject the dmg file. 4. Start MAXQDA from the Desktop and confirm that you want to open the downloaded file. Also confirm the

Terms & Conditions and a MAXQDA error message. The program will automatically close afterwards. 5. After you have done that you may now drag the app with the MAXQDA icon onto your flash drive and use

MAXQDA from it.

Activation

Double-click on the MAXQDA symbol on your USB flash drive to start the activation process. Please enter your

serial number, your name and your e-mail address, and then click "Activate now".

Note:

• To avoid typos, copy and paste the serial number.

• The serial number is your proof of purchase. Keep it in a safe place for future reference.

The activation is complete. You have successfully activated MAXQDA!

License Information & Service

Reinstall MAXQDA on the same USB flash drive

If a reinstallation becomes necessary (e.g. because MAXQDA has been deleted accidentally) just reactivate MAXQDA

using your serial number. MAXQDA automatically recognizes that it is on the same flash drive.

Transfer MAXQDA to a new USB flash drive

If you want to transfer MAXQDA to a different USB flash drive, you need to deactivate your current MAXQDA

installation. Once this is done, your serial number can be used for an activation of MAXQDA on your new USB flash

drive.

Updates

As a MAXQDA license holder, you can take advantage of regular free program updates. These can include upgrades

to existing functions as well as entirely new functions. MAXQDA informs you automatically when an update is

available. You can also search for updates manually in the help menu.
