Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

Opening Remarks from Customer Service Arneg Canada’s refrigerated display cases are specially designed to provide the kind of flexibility and performance required in today’s markets. In order to minimize any maintenance problems and maximize the efficiency of your refrigeration operations, we recommend following some simple procedures as you install, use and maintain this equipment:

Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done.

Before undertaking any maintenance operation on a refrigerated case, ensure that it has been unplugged or the power supply has been cut off.

Have only competent professionals complete the installation.

Keep the equipment clean and sanitary, in compliance with all governmental hygiene and sanitation regulations.

The first time your refrigerated case is used or after it has been out of operation for a long period of time,

merchandise should not be placed back in the case until the case has attained its operating temperature, i.e. after approximately 3 to 4 hours.

To reduce product loss, rotate merchandise to prevent older inventory from accumulating. Following a first-in,

first-out rule will maintain products in a sellable condition.

Do not place sales panels, large price tags or other similar material in the equipment, as they will interfere with normal air circulation (this does not apply to regular price tags, which are designed to be inserted into the 1-¼’’ or 3’’ price tag mouldings).

SUPPLY AND RETURN AIR CONDUITS MUST NEVER BE OBSTRUCTED, AS THIS WOULD

COMPROMISE THE OPERATION OF YOUR REFRIGERATED CASE. DO NOT SURPASS THE LINE INDICATING THE LOAD LIMIT.

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

2. Installation Manual

2.1. Reception, unpacking and initial cleaning

When you receive your new refrigerated case, the first thing to do is unpack it. The unit must be unpacked with care, since some of the parts and/or accessories required to set up the case and put it into service may be loose (or in bags). (For example, the kick plate, glass, a joint cover, etc.)

2.1.1. Shipping damage

As you unpack your unit, check whether your case has been damaged in transport. Carefully inspect all the equipment, both before and as it is unloaded. Our products are inspected in the plant, and the carrier is fully liable for any damage incurred in transport. If ever the product has suffered apparent or hidden damage, a claim can be filed with Customer Service at Arneg Canada. If you find evidence of loss or damage, it must be noted on the bill of lading or express receipt and signed by the carrier’s agent. If it is not indicated, the carrier could refuse the claim. The carrier will provide any forms required. When the loss or damage is not apparent before the unit is completely unpacked, you will need to file a claim for hidden damages. When the damage is discovered, submit a written request for inspection to Customer Service at Arneg Canada within 15 days of receiving the product. You must save the packing materials, and the claim must be filed by the customer who received the product from Arneg Canada.

After having removed the device’s protective packing and fully examined it, perform an initial cleaning of the interior and exterior, using a soft, nonabrasive soap. If the fluorescent lights have come out of their end caps, they will need to be tightened. (For more information, see Section 3.5, Regular cleaning.)

2.2. Set-up and levelling

Refrigerated cases must be levelled to ensure proper functioning of their refrigeration systems and efficient drainage during defrost cycles. Level your case as follows:

Levelling the case: The case should be placed at the intended point of sale and levelled using offcuts of sheet metal that can be found in all cases.

NOTE: When levelling rows of cases, start at the highest point in the floor.

Page 13: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

To obtain best results when installing the plastic kick plates, it is important to the install metal kick plate supports when setting up the case, as shown in the photograph below. This will ensure that the kick plates are properly aligned and sufficiently solid throughout the length of the case.

2.3. Connecting the water drainage pipes

Water is drained from the refrigerated cases through a drain located at the base of the tub. This drain must be connected to a floor drain so that the tub is drained when the case is defrosted and cleaned. Before making the connection, ensure that all water drained to the floor passes through a trap in order to prevent bad odours from entering the case and to reduce the risk of problems with the installation. Arneg provides one trap per drain. Traps can be connected to a 1½’’ ABS pipe. Important: Do not tighten with a wrench, but with the fingers, in order to prevent damage to the connections. Note: Drains to the floor must have a slight slope (1/8’’ per foot) to facilitate proper draining. Before turning the case on, add water or mineral oil to the traps in all the cases. This will prevent bad odours from rising and keep the drain from freezing. For self-contained units, the water generated during defrost cycles is recovered in a condensate pan located in the lower part of the unit (with the exception of the Bourgogne, where the pan is on top) where it is automatically evaporated. The inside of the case must be cleaned with a damp cloth to prevent an excessive accumulation of water.

2.3.1. Drain installation procedure

Proper drain installation is essential to achieve optimal case operation and avoid the unnecessary loss of merchandise. During drain installations:

Page 14: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

ARNEG CANADA INC., LACOLLE, QC, 1 800 363-3439

http://www.arneg.ca/ Page 12 de 22

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

ALWAYS INSTALL THE DRAINS IN ACCORDANCE WITH LOCAL CODES;

Install the drain with the most slope possible. The minimum slope is 1/8’’ per one foot horizontally;

Avoid having drains run over long distances, since they cannot provide adequate slope for effective draining (maximum of two (2) cases per floor drain);

Ensure that the drains will not freeze. When drains are located in enclosed spaces, such as

between a case and one of the store’s walls, provide forced air circulation to prevent the drains from freezing;

Do not install drains where they will come into contact with uninsulated suction lines. Suction lines

should be insulated with an impermeable material, such as "Armaflex";

Do not bypass, cut or remove the traps provided with the cases.

2.4. Connecting refrigeration lines

2.4.1. Type of refrigerant

The type of refrigerant used in the unit is indicated on each case’s name plate. We test leak pressures (at 300 PSI). Before making the connection, be sure to check the access valve to see that the system has 300 PSI of pressure.

2.4.2. Refrigeration lines

Service line sizes:

Liquid line: 3/8’’ OD Suction line: See defrost schedule on page 23.

Note: Pipes for cases on the same refrigeration system can run from one case to another through the refrigeration holes provided for this purpose. Do not run refrigeration lines through cases that are not on the same refrigeration system.

2.4.3. Position of refrigeration service lines

The refrigerant service line is usually found at the far right side of the case. After having connected the line, seal the inside and the outside of the pipe outlet. We recommend using an expanded, sprayed polyurethane. Access holes have been provided for running pipes through each inside end of the unit and at the bottom of the back panel on the right-hand side. For more information, see the views of case drains or contact your Arneg representative.

Page 15: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

2.4.4. Access to the valve and the drain

Gain access to the valve by lifting the panels at the bottom of the unit. In most of our products, the valve is located on the left-hand side. Generally speaking, drains can be accessed by lifting the case’s deck pan. Otherwise, they are located under the fan motor support (plenum). In this case, an access door in the middle of the fan motor support and in line with the drain simplifies access. Some models have drains at either end of the tub. For more information, see the views of case drains or contact your Arneg representative.

2.4.5. Adjusting the expansion valve

The expansion valve should only be adjusted by a qualified refrigeration technician.

2.5. Electrical connection

Electrical connections must be completed by specialized personnel and meet current safety standards. An electrical plan is provided with each unit. This plan can be found in the unit’s electrical box. On most units, the box is located underneath the case at left (seen from the front). On Bruxelle_LS, Champagne_LS, PL05-7_LS, PL05-10_LS and Brema units, the box is located on top, at left (seen from the front). On Bilbao, Malmo, Mini-Malmo, some Boston and Lacolle units, the box is located underneath at right (seen from the front). Begin by confirming that the supply voltage matches the voltage indicated on the unit’s name plate. In order to work well, variations in the unit’s voltage must not exceed +6% vn. Wiring for supply lines and auxiliary wiring (lights, fans…) must be made of copper in an appropriate gauge. All ground wires must be green. Check that the ground connection is working. A good ground is essential to avoid electrical discharges. The unit’s power supply must be protected upstream by an appropriate automatic thermomagnetic switch that will also act as a general I.G. switch and disconnect the line.

WARNING

CONNECTING A CASE TO AN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY THAT DOES NOT COMPLY WITH INDICATIONS ON THE NAME PLATE WILL VOID THE WARRANTY

AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE UNIT.

For your safety and that of your customers, it is essential to have the unit properly grounded.

Page 16: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

On-site connections: Before selecting a gauge of wiring, always consult the information provided on the unit’s name plate. Although all wiring must be selected according to the amperage indicated on the name plate, the actual current may be less than the indicated current.

2.5.1. Installing and replacing lamps

Our fluorescent lamps are supplied with humidity-resistant supports, protective end caps and protective screens. A switch located in the light panel of refrigerated cases turns on the shelves, the light channel and the sill light (optional on some models). When installing fluorescent bulbs, make sure pins are securely fastened in protective caps (you will hear a “click”). When replacing the lamps, you must turn off the electricity supply before changing. Otherwise the lamps would be damaged and could have a shorter lifespan. Therefore, the replacement of the lamps is not guaranteed if the replacing’s process doesn’t take in account before changing. Always turn off the main electrical current. Before changing or replacing any electrical component.

WARNING

ALWAYS TURN OFF THE MAIN ELECTRICAL CURRENT BEFORE CHANGING OR REPLACING ANY LUMINESCENT LAMPS OR LED LAMPS.

2.5.2. Replacing lamp supports and end caps

The support for Arneg lamps is designed to clip on to slits in the light channel that have been designed for this purpose. The lamp support fits inside the end cap. See also the drawing that follows.

Important: Always replace supports and end caps with Arneg lamp supports and end caps. Using another model could compromise the electrical contact, resulting in shorter lifespan for your fluorescent tubes.

WARNING

PLEASE MAKE SURE PINS ARE PROPERLY SECURED TO PREVENT THE BALLAST FROM OVERHEATING AND GOING INTO STANDBY MODE. OVER TIME, THIS CAN SHORTEN THE LIFE OF

THE LAMP AND BALLAST. WHEN INSERTING LAMPS AND CAPS MAKE SURE YOU HEAR THE “CLICK”.

N.B. The above applies to standard T8 lighting systems. Consult your representative if your unit uses a different lighting system, e.g. LED.

2.6. Electrical connection in cases with self-contained units

These cases have been designed to be plugged in. Attach the plug for electrical connection to the electrical cord in accordance with safety standards: green = ground, white = neutral, black and/or red = phase. The case must be connected in accordance with the specifications provided on the electrical plans. It is nevertheless recommended that you comply with the following directions:

Ensure that the supply voltage matches the value indicated on the name plate. To guarantee normal operation, the maximum variation must fall within +6% to -6% of the nominal value.

Ensure that the electrical cord is placed in such a manner that it will not be damaged and will not pose a

safety risk to anyone.

In the event that the electrical supply is temporarily interrupted, ensure that all the store’s electrical devices can start up again without tripping overload protection devices. If this occurs, change the installation so that the units will turn on in a staggered manner. Do not forget that the electrical installation can only be changed by qualified technicians (consult the electrical drawing in the unit’s electrical box).

2.7. Shelf installation

Set shelves at required height. Make sure unused back plugs are capped properly and that male shelf plugs are inserted fully. This will keep moisture from penetrating (during cleaning) and causing short circuits.

2.8. Joining guide

A linear set-up means that two or more cases are joined to form a long line of cases with two end units used at the ends of the line. (See the section on Joining at the end of this document.) NOTE: You can use a tape measure, a chalk line or a laser to ensure that the line is straight and that the cases are properly aligned.

2.9. External loads

The top surfaces of cases have not been designed to support the weight of merchandise or people. DO NOT WALK on top of the cases: damage to the refrigerators and serious injury may result.

2.10. Stocking guide

Products should not be placed in the cases before all refrigeration controls have been adjusted and the refrigerated cases have reached their operating temperatures.

3. Operating Conditions

3.1. Temperature control

Our models are designed for operation in air-conditioned environments only.

Our cases have been designed for very specific ambient conditions at point of sale. These conditions are

75F (24C) and a maximum relative humidity of 55%. If your ambient conditions are not within these parameters, case performance may be sub-optimal.

Excessive levels of specific humidity, usually accompanied by temperatures that are too high, can interfere

with the operation of refrigerated cases.

Air currents in excess of 39.4 ft/min (0.2 m/s) can also compromise the operation of your case, so it should not be placed near doors or in breezy areas.

Sources of radiant heat, such as sunlight, diffusers, hot air conduits, and uninsulated walls and roofs also

create conditions that interfere with proper case operation.

Temperatures are monitored using a thermometer located inside the case.

After approximately 60 minutes of operation, take a temperature reading from the thermometer. (See the required value in the Temperature Table on page 34.)

The user is responsible for having the appropriate foodstuffs in the refrigerated case so that they are

properly refrigerated according to current regulations.

It is important to remember that the refrigerated unit is designed to maintain merchandise at the appropriate temperature when it is placed in the unit; it is not designed to lower the temperature of the merchandise.

Page 20: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

3.1.1. Adjusting the temperature

Temperature is adjusted with a thermostat graded in °F. This thermostat can be found next to or inside the electrical box; look for the words “Temperature Control.”

Place only merchandise that is already at its recommended temperature in the case (see the Temperature Table on page 34).

Remember that good food management involves selling the merchandise that has been in the case the

longest before merchandise that just been placed in the case (proper turnover of food inventories). When loading the case, ensure that you follow a first-in, first-out policy.

Only place merchandise in a case if the case is working properly and is well maintained.

Never cover (even partially) the case’s air outlet and return vents with merchandise, tags or other

decorative accessories.

3.2. Regular cleaning

WARNING

BEFORE CLEANING: SHUT OFF FANS, MAKE SURE UNUSED BACK PLUGS ARE CAPPED PROPERLY AND THAT ALL MALE PLUGS ARE INSERTED FULLY.

Foodstuffs can very easily spread bacteria and germs. This is why it is essential to rigorously follow current hygiene standards. This applies to packaged as well as unpackaged foodstuffs, since the packaging can be compromised and the food that is no longer protected can end up loose in the case. Small products such as peas can fall to the bottom of the tub and come into contact with the defrosting elements (when the case is equipped with electric defrosting) or block the water drain at the bottom of the tub.

WARNING

DO NOT USE HOT WATER ON COLD GLASS SURFACES. THIS COULD SHATTER THE GLASS AND CAUSE INJURY. GIVE THE GLASS, END CAPS AND DOORS

ENOUGH TIME TO WARM UP BEFORE APPLYING HOT WATER.

The cleaning of refrigerated cases can be divided into two distinct stages:

3.2.1. Cleaning external parts (daily/weekly)

The goal behind cleaning external parts is to make the most of the case’s beauty and offer customers a clean and organized environment. Exterior finishing trim, glass, profiles, price tag supports, etc. must be cleaned on a regular basis. For this type of cleaning, use cleaning products that are compatible with the surfaces to be cleaned. Regular commercial detergent products work well on painted or enamel surfaces, plastic and anodized aluminum. The surfaces should then be rinsed with clean water and wiped down thoroughly. Avoid using abrasive products and solvents, which can damage case surfaces. Similarly, you must absolutely not let any water or detergent reach the case’s electrical components. The case’s external parts can be cleaned anywhere from once a day to once a week.

3.2.2. Cleaning internal parts (monthly)

Beyond any aesthetic considerations, the internal parts of a case are cleaned in order to destroy pathogenic micro-organisms and protect the merchandise. Before starting to clean the inside of a case, it is necessary to:

Empty the case of all merchandise and debris;

Turn off all powered circuits (refrigeration, fans, heating cables, elements, etc.);

Remove air return grills.

Internal surfaces can be cleaned with most domestic detergents and any aseptic solutions that do not damage surfaces. Do not use mineral-oil-based solutions, because they will dissolve the sealant used to build the cases. Thoroughly clean all surfaces with soap and hot water. DO NOT USE STEAM OR PRESSURIZED WATER TO WASH INTERIOR SURFACES. Rinse with hot water without flooding the case. NEVER POUR WATER IN THE CASE FASTER THAN IT CAN GO DOWN THE DRAIN.

Moveable parts like display trays and grills must be washed with warm water and a detergent containing a disinfectant. Check to see that there is nothing that could slow the water from draining out of the bottom of the tub. To have access to the bottom of the tub:

Lift the bottom trays;

Lift the fan support sheet (the fan motor support, or plenum) as required;

Remove strainers and clean them. If ice has formed, have a qualified refrigeration technician check the defrosting elements and the end-of-defrost thermostat elements. Once cleaning is complete, you can re-introduce the (dry) elements. Make sure that the fan motor supports have been properly re-installed; otherwise, you risk losing merchandise due to poor refrigeration. Then reconnect the power supply and the refrigeration management system. Wait until the case has reached its normal operating temperature before re-introducing merchandise.

WARNING

DO NOT PLACE MERCHANDISE IN A NON-REFRIGERATED AREA.

Caution! Do not use alcohol or a solvent for cleaning methacrylate (fibreglass) parts.

3.2.3. Cleaning the honeycombs (every 6 months)

The honeycombs should be cleaned every six months. Any dirt that accumulates in the honeycombs can significantly affect the performance of a refrigerated case. Honeycombs should be cleaned with a vacuum. Water and soap can be used if you take care to dry the honeycombs well before replacing them. Take care to avoid damaging them.

3.3. Periodic maintenance

Implement a periodic cleaning program following the directions in this manual. Ensure that employees

understand the importance of cleaning the cases well and that they follow the recommended procedures.

When cleaning the cases, ensure that the blades and coils are free of dust. Do not let dirt collect on fan blades; it could result in the motor breaking down prematurely.

Keep drains clean and free of debris. Clogged drains prevent the case from obtaining the required

refrigeration temperature.

Do not use ammonia or an ammonia-based cleaner around electrical and electronic components.

Draft a policy for routine inspection of electrical connections. This will reveal whether connections are firmly secured in the terminals and whether there are problems in the wiring, and allow you to avoid serious problems.

Turn off the case’s lights before cleaning the case.

WARNING

BE SURE TO CUT OFF THE COUNTER’S ELECTRICAL POWER BEFORE INSPECTING ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS!

3.4. Sound advice for good operation

To keep your cases running well for as long as possible, be sure to:

3.4.1. Operating environment

Maintain temperature and ambient humidity levels below the values specified on page 37. It is essential

that air conditioning, ventilation and heating conditions are always optimal.

Keep the speed of ambient air around case openings under 39.4 ft/min (0.2 m/sec). Avoid having air currents or air conditioning outlets directed toward case openings.

Avoid letting the sun shine directly on merchandise displayed in the case.

Limit the temperature of radiant surfaces at the point of sale (for example, by insulating ceilings).

Limit or avoid using lighting that would have incandescent bulbs shining directly on the case.

Page 23: Installation and Operation Manual - by Arneg · 2018-07-12 · Carefully read the Installation and Operation Manual; this will optimize any work that needs to be done. Before undertaking

http://www.arneg.ca/ Page 21 de 22

Revision 6 – 06/12/2013

3.4.2. Loading the case

Confirm that merchandise does not exceed the loading limit.

Verify whether the case is able to maintain merchandise at the desired temperature.

Ensure that merchandise loaded into the case is at the correct temperature.

Ensure that return and supply air grills are not blocked by merchandise, price tags or other accessories.

3.4.3. Various

If a case breaks down, take immediate measures to keep refrigerated foodstuffs from warming up

(move them to the main cold room or close the case with covers).

Solve potential problems as they arise (loose screws, burned-out bulbs, etc.).

Periodically verify that the automatic defrosting is functioning properly (frequency, time, return to normal operation, etc.).

Verify the flow of defrosting water (clear drains, clean filters, verify traps, etc.).

Ensure that there is no unusual build-up of condensation or ice. If this happens, immediately consult a

qualified refrigeration technician. Condensation occurs when humid air in the ambient environment comes into contact with a surface that is at a temperature below its dew point. The formation of condensation:

o Reduces product visibility (misty glass and mirrors), reducing sales; o Causes the formation of drops of water and the pooling of water on the floor; o Wets unpackaged food and alters the packaging of other products, etc.

Once a year, have the case verified by a REFRIGERATION TECHNICIAN.

3.5. To place a service call

In order to receive rapid service when calling for information on your cases, be sure to have the model number and the serial number at hand when you call. This information appears on the name plate (see the section Where to find serial numbers and name plates, on pages 7 and 8). Before placing your service call, ensure that:

The case is properly plugged in;

The electrical protections on the power supply are appropriate and properly installed;

The products do not exceed the case’s loading limit;

The case is not installed near an air current or a source of heat;

Ambient temperature and humidity are optimal;

The case is properly installed (see also Section 2);

All circuit breakers and fuses are working and all power supply switches are at “ON”;

If you are in an area that has voltage problems, try turning off all non-essential electrical equipment.

WARNING

ALWAYS TURN OFF THE MAIN ELECTRICAL CURRENT BEFORE CHANGING OR REPLACING ANY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT.
