1.1 Description

The Vent-Axia HR100R is a remote mounting unit toprovide balanced ventilation with up to 70%heat recovery for applications where there is noimmediate access to an external wall. TheHR100R is ideal for installations involving internalbathrooms and meets building regulationrequirements for this application.

A two speed motor provides for constant lowrate ventilation with a boost speed option. Freshpre-warmed air from outside is continuallyprovided to the room with simultaneousextraction of stale air and smells. Heat istransferred from outgoing air to the fresh airsupply with zero cross contamination, maintaining internal temperatures and providinga fresh environment.

3.1 Installing the Unit

1. Check that all components have beendelivered, as identified in the delivery note.Notify the supplier of any errors or omissionsimmediately.

2. Check the diagrammatic ducting layoutdrawing to ensure that the proposed ductroutes, fan unit and air terminal locations canbe accommodated. If in doubt, refer to theTechnical Department.

3. The unit is designed to be mountedhorizontally. After noting the positions of theelectrical connector, duct spigots and drainageconnection for the unit, choose a suitableinstallation site for the unit. The most desirablelocation for the unit is normally within the roofspace.

4. Never locate the unit above a sleeping area. The most suitable position is normally abovethe landing or bathroom. The selected site mustallow adequate space around the unit for theremoval of the access panel and heatexchanger for maintenance and servicingpuposes.

5. When installing the unit, a suitable platformmust be made. This should be built fromchipboard or blockboard (19mm preferred). Thisboard should be raised enough to facilitate themounting of the unit above joist level.

6. The unit must be positioned so that thecondensate outlet can be trapped and thecondensate conveyed properly with acontinuous gradient to discharge through thegable or to the eaves gutter in the selectedlocation.

7. Connect the drainage system as appropriateusing PVC pipework, joined using PVC cementto ensure of watertight joints.N.B. The trap should be charged/filled beforeoperating the system, and should be checkedespecially in summer. Also note that a blockedcondensate outlet pipe due to insufficient pipegradient will quickly lead to water damage.

8. A shell bit is recommended for drilling holesin the ceiling to accomodate the housings forsupply and extract air terminals (SV100 andEV100). Make sure that you are not drilling intostructural members, water or gas pipes orelectrical cables and that there is room behindthe plaster board for duct access and securingring. Ceiling terminals should preferably befitted equidistant from adjacent walls bearing inmind that coving may already be fitted or maybe fitted at a later date.

3.1 Installing the Unit

9. Place the terminal housing in the hole in theceiling and secure to the back ring with the fourscrews provided.

10. For two storey new build properties it isrecommended that the ground floor terminalhousings are secured in position in advance ofthe plasterboard panels being fixed, byobtaining a sheet of plasterboard of the typeand thickness to be used. Cut a square of thesheet to just span two joists in the corner wherethe terminal is to be fitted. Remember that theedge of the sheet on the inner joist should onlyrest on half of the joist thickness. This allows afixing surface for the next sheet of plasterboardto be secured to when it is fitted. Tack up theplasterboard in position on the ceiling andconnect up and seal the duct and fittings.

11. For two storey existing properties it isnecessary to lift the floor coverings at first floorlevel above the terminal positions to gainaccess to the terminal housings to secure andseal the duct and fittings.

12. Fix in position all vertical supply and extractair ducting being conveyed between groundfloor ceiling level and the loft space.

13. The external grilles for intake and exhaustair should be positioned so that the exhaust airis not drawn in again.

14. If the grilles are fitted in the same gable atthe same height, a minimum of 1m betweengrilles is recommended.

15. If the grilles are positioned above oneanother the distance apart should be at least1m with the exhaust grille at the top.

16. Roof ventilators placed on the same roofsurface should be positioned at the samedistances as the grilles.

17. Always ensure that all exhaust grilles/roofventilators are placed higher than the top edgeof the highest window and at a distance of atleast 1m from the nearest window.

18. External grilles placed in the soffit shouldbe positioned at the same distances asindicated for gables.

19. The Quicktube Rigid UPVC duct systempermits fast, easy assembly whilst ensuringpressure-proof system sealing.

20. The ducts are delivered in lengths of 3mand are easily shortened as required with aduct saw or a similar fine toothed saw. Werecommend that you file the edges of the ductsafter shortening.

21. Assemble the duct and fittings, following asclosely as possible the diagrammatic ductinglayout. Ensure that the duct is raised abovejoist level to allow for thermal insulation of theducting.

22. Each straight length of duct is assembledusing a flexible connector (QTC) to join the twoends, whilst 90° and 45° diversions andbranches are accomplished with flexible fittings(QTB90, QTB45 and QTET). The duct is a pushfit into the socket of the connector and fittings.

23. Once assembled the joints are secured withduct tape (DT30) to provide an airtight seal.Ensure that the tape is secured over thecomplete joint area to provide an airtight seal.

24. If the loft space is unheated the unit andducting will require to be thermally insulated topreclude condensation occuring and tominimise heat loss. This requirement must beobserved in the planning and routing of theduct system.

25. The insulation recommended is Alreflex 1L1which comprises 3mm thick polyethylenebubble sheet laminated on the external surfacewith aluminium foil protected by a thinpolythene film. The product is CFC and HFCfree and has a surface spread of flame of Class1 tested to BS476 Part 7/971. It should, however, be protected from open flames orsparks and stored apart from highly flammablematerials.

26. The material provides resistance to heatloss from the distribution ducting and a highlyeffective vapour barrier when all joints aresealed with metallised tape. It is light but robust, not easily damaged in storage or duringconstruction and is rot proof, water and vapourresistent, durable and can be expected toremain an effective insulant for the normal lifespan of a building.

27. The insulation is supplied in 1.5m longpreformed sections for application to the ductingat the time of installation. All joints should besecured using the metalised tape (DTA30)provided to ensure that a continuous vapourseal is maintained.

28. The use of flexible ducting should be limitedto an absolute minimum. If used it should befully stretched in order to minimse pressureloss.

29. Offer the unit on to the mounting surface, ensuring that it is not susceptible to movementunder operation. Use directional airflowindicators on the top of the unit to ensure thecorrect connection to external and internalvents.

30. Mate up the ducting as appropriate, ensuring that the airflow is in line with thedirectional indicators.

31. Determine the most appropriate sitingposition for the appropriate control. Normally, this would either be a manual control switch(NBSW), pull-cord switch (PCSW) humidityswitch (HS6) or speed control switch(VCON100).

32. Determine the appropriate wiringconnections as outlined within section 4, andwire in accordance with current IEE WiringRegulations, ensuring that the mains feed isisolated before making any connections.
