Installation Overview
The Product is an optical system that operates through precisely designed light reflections. Be careful not to bend the components when assembling and installing
the Product. Handle all the components with mirror surfaces by the edges or use gloves during installation to prevent finger printing. Installation includes the following
steps:
• Plan location
• Select power unit enclosure
• Plan power unit placement and cable routing
• Rough in cable
• Install power unit
• Install junction box (optional)
• Assemble Lightfalls fixture
• Mount Lightfalls fixture
• Make electrical connections
• Mount primary reflectors
To reduce risk associated
with fire: Only use the LED
driver(s) provided by 3M.
! WARNING
Installing the Product
Plan Location
• Identify the proposed location on wall or ceiling.
Select Power Unit Enclosure
Local ordinances require an electrical enclosure for the LED drivers. The size and
type of enclosure will depend upon where it is to be installed.
• Select a suitable metal enclosure, minimum dimensions 7.41" x 3.75" x 3.5"
(188.21mm x 95.25mm x 88.9mm) or 90 cu. in. for each LED driver.
• Mount the LED driver in the metal enclosure.
NOTE: The LED driver has a maximum case temperature of 70°C (158°F)
and begins derating 20%/10°C at 50°C. Undersizing the enclosure or
mounting the LED driver with poor thermal contact may result in decreased
LED driver lifetime and void the warranty. If the LED driver case tempera-
ture is 70°C, there will be approximately 40% less light out of the fixture.
Table A. Maximum Run Length Between LED Driver and Junction Box
Plan Power Unit Placement and Cable Routing
• Select a location for the power unit satisfying local ordinances.
• Determine how the cables will be routed through wall or ceiling.
For fixture to power unit distance greater than 25 feet:
• Supply additional secondary wire (Figures 1 and 2, Page 4) between the
junction box and the LED driver.
• Determine the run length between the power unit and the junction box.
• Select the appropriate wire gauge for additional secondary wire between the
LED driver and junction box using Table A. Column 3 of Table A displays the
maximum run lengths with a shortened wire harness less than or equal to 5
feet. One reason to shorten the wire harness would be to run plenum-rated
or riser-rated cable instead.
The Product operates on a Class 2 circuit and must be wired as in Figure 1 or
Figure 2 (Page 4).
IMPORTANT NOTE: To operate correctly, the wire distance from the LED
driver to the Lightfalls fixture must be within the maximum run length indi-
cated in Table A between LED driver and junction box.
Rough in Cable
• Rough in the cable as shown in the diagram in Figure 1 or Figure 2 (Page 4).
• If not using a dimmer and relay, cap off Dim+ and Dim– with wire nuts and
connect AC_L directly to ACL and AC_N directly to ACN on the LED driver.

Installing the Product (cont.)
Assemble Lightfalls Fixture
The Product can be partially assembled and installed in sections or completely assembled before it is installed, depending on the installer’s preference.
Many different lighting effects can be created, depending on how the components of the Lightfalls fixture are assembled. All fixtures consist of three basic
types of segments:
• Heatsink LED assembly segment (Figure 3).
• Virtual LED assembly segment (Figure 4).
• End mounts (Figure 5) - used for the arc configuration (Figure 6, Page 5) and ‘S’ configuration (Figure 7, Page 5). The circle configuration (Figure 8,
Page 5) does not require end mounts.
The heatsink LED assembly can be placed anywhere in the design to achieve different lighting effects. For example, if an asymmetrical distribution is
desired, the heatsink LED assembly can be located to one side of the configuration or the other, not in the middle position as shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8.

Typical Configurations
Arc Configuration (Three-Reflector Configuration)
• Using the hex driver and screws provided, assemble one heatsink LED
assembly segment (Figure 3) to form an arc (Figure 6) with end mounts
(Figure 5).
‘S’ Configuration (Five-Reflector Configuration)
• Using the hex driver and screws provided, assemble two heatsink LED
assembly segments (Figure 3) — one with a linear virtual LED plate — with
end mounts (Figure 5).
• Connect the segments to form an ‘S’ (Figure 7).
NOTE: The central virtual LED reflector has no mirror film and is painted
white, even when other fixture hardware is black. The white LED reflector
diffuses light, rather than continuing the light reflections.

Before Energizing the Circuit
Ensure that the cabling is secure, the connections are tight and the length of cable between the Lightfalls fixture and power unit is within the maximum
for the gauge of wire used.
Component Replacement
The power unit may be serviced by an electrician. Replacement Lightfalls fixtures
and accessory kits can be ordered from 3M. For ordering information for full mount-
ing kits, please see the Lightfalls by 3M + Todd Bracher Specification Sheet or go to
www.3Marchitecturalmarkets.com.
Handling, Cleaning and Repairing
Handling
Handle the Lightfalls fixture with care. This assembly can be damaged if improperly or roughly handled. Keep the Product in its original packaging until
installation, and if feasible, transport the Product to the site in its original box. Handle all the components with mirror surfaces by the edges or use gloves
during installation to prevent finger printing.
Cleaning
If needed, use a mild, non-abrasive, water-based detergent solution to clean main reflectors. Plastic polishes may also be used. DO NOT use solvent-
based, ammonia-based cleaning solutions or glass cleaners. These may mar or discolor the transmissive lens. The flat secondary reflector plates may be
cleaned with glass cleaner. This same recommendation applies to the non-reflector side (acrylic), however, this side can be repaired of light scratches
using acrylic polishing compounds.
Repairing
Except for replacing the replaceable components, DO NOT attempt to repair the Lightfalls fixtures, which do not have user-serviceable parts.
Troubleshooting
If the solutions below do not work for you, please call 3M Technical Service at 1-888-650-3497.
Table D. Troubleshooting
Related Documentation
Please refer to the Lightfalls by 3M + Todd Bracher Specification Sheet for product specifications and ordering information.
Problem Potential Cause What to Do
LED does not illuminate
LED driver does not have AC input Make sure light switch or other control relay is on and/or breaker is on.
Secondary side open circuit Find and fix open connection. If the Output Voltage from the LED driver is 36V, but there is no light coming from the LED, there is likely an open circuit. Make sure connectors are properly seated.
Secondary side short circuit or reverse connection
Find and fix short circuit. If the Secondary LED wiring is shorted together or connected back-wards, the LED driver should read near 0V. The connector at the fixture can be forced in back-wards. Make sure the connector is in the keyed orientation.
LED driver does not have >30 V DC output
If input AC is supplied but DC output voltage is not supplied, the LED driver needs to be replaced. Remove load before measuring LED driver output, because a short on the secondary side can make the LED driver seem broken.
LED driver 0–10V control wiring shorted
Find and fix short.
LED does not dim Control wiring open Find and fix open.
Light does not illuminate full fixture
A primary reflector is misoriented by 90 degrees
Check all primary reflectors for correct orientation.
