Installation Guide: Medic Mobile for Antenatal Care

Introduction This guide will walk you through how to install and configure Medic Mobile for Antenatal Care (ANC). We recommend you read through this guide prior to installing Medic Mobile on your computer and use it as a reference while you install. Before you Begin Before you get started, make sure that you have all of the required materials to install and test Medic Mobile:

• Computer:

o Make sure you have at least 2GB RAM (4GB is recommended).

o Install Google Chrome prior to installing Medic Mobile (other browsers will work but Chrome is recommended).

• GSM Modem:

o Should be supported by gammu, a library that allows the modem to connect to Medic Mobile. Click here to con-

firm if your modem is on the list of supported modems. Modems not on this list may work, but it is not guaranteed.

o Needs to have a working/active SIM card loaded with airtime.

• Mobile Phone:

o Any phone can be used as long as it can send and receive text messages. A smartphone is NOT required.

• Mobile Network Connectivity:

o You will need connectivity at your health facility to send and receive SMS messages.

o Your community health workers will also need to be able to access the mobile network for sending and receiving

SMS messages from Medic Mobile.

o It is preferable to procure SIM cards for the community health workers from one type of network to minimize SMS

costs.


1. Download Medic Mobile for Antenatal Care

If you do not already have Medic Mobile on a USB drive, visit the Medic Mobile website (www.medicmobile.org/diy) to request a download link.


2. Locate the Medic Mobile installer

If you have the installer file on a USB drive, go to its folder in My Computer. If you have downloaded the software, you will find the installer file in your Downloads folder in My Computer. After locating the installer file, double-click on it to begin installation.


3. Run the installer

Once you have double-clicked on the installer file, you will see a warning from your computer. Click “Run”.


4. Click “Install”

Now the Medic Mobile installer will appear, as in the screen shot below. Click on “Install”. Please be patient and wait un-til you see Setup Successful. It may take several minutes to complete the installation process.


5. When installation is complete, click “Launch”.

Installation is complete when you see “Setup Successful” (see the image below). Click the “Launch” button and the Medic Mobile Status Window will open.


6. Wait for Medic Mobile to turn ON

After the Status Window appears at the right side of your screen, wait for Medic Mobile to turn on. This may take several minutes. The “Open” button will turn blue when Medic Mobile is ON. Click the “Open” button to continue setup.


7. Create an account

After clicking the “Open” button your browser will open and you will be directed to a screen where you need to create an account for Medic Mobile. This username and password are what you will use to login to Medic Mobile so make sure you remember them! Enter the information requested to set up your Medic Mobile account. When you are finished, click Next Step.


8. Wait for your account to initialize

After you click “Next Step”, Medic Mobile will initialize your account and finish setting up the Medic Mobile platform.


This process may take a few minutes. Be patient and wait until you see: Platform started successfully with a green checkmark. Then click Finish to complete the setup process.


9. Select a language

Choose the language that will be the default language for Medic Mobile. Each time you log in, Medic Mobile will be in this language. If you choose to create additional accounts for other users at your health facility, they will see Medic Mo-bile in this language unless they change their language settings.


10. Welcome to Medic Mobile

You are now using Medic Mobile! Click Start to configure Medic Mobile using our simple wizard.


11. Configure Medic Mobile

Our simple configuration wizard helps you get Medic Mobile ready to be used in just a few minutes. Be sure to complete all of the steps before you click Finish to ensure Medic Mobile works as you expect.


12. Modem setup

You will need a USB GSM modem with an active SIM card to send and receive text messages. If you have not already plugged your modem in, you may do so now. Select the default country code you would like to use with Medic Mobile and then enter the phone number of your modem. You will not be able to send and receive messages until your modem is on.


Once you plug in you modem, you can check its status in the Status Window in the tray at the bottom right of your screen.


13. Identify care coordinators

Select your care coordinator. This is the person who will be registering and tracking pregnancies in your community. Care coordinators will receive all SMS messages related to the pregnancies being registered and will need a mobile phone with a texting plan.

Tip: Community health workers are proven agents of change in their communities. They can receive SMS on behalf of many pregnancies and follow up with individuals in person. Sending messages directly to pregnant women may be a challenge for those without consistent access to a family’s shared mobile phone, and the reporting required of them may be challenging for those less proficient in technology. Sending messages about all pregnancies in a community to a nurse may be overwhelming to a nurse with a busy workload.


14. Language preference

Select your language. First, choose the language that your care coordinators are most familiar with. This is the language in which they will receive messages from Medic Mobile. Second, choose the language in which you would like to view the Medic Mobile application. This is the language website users of Medic Mobile will see when they log in.


15. Registration form

Decide whether or not your care coordinators will be collecting the last menstrual period (LMP) date from pregnant wom-en. If this information is not usually shared, you can choose without LMP.


16. Share impact statistics

This option will allow Medic Mobile to receive the statistics to study the impact of DIY. Decide whether or not you are will-ing to share anonymous impact statistics with Medic Mobile. This is a short report that is automatically sent to Medic Mo-bile each month so that we can help you track your impact and follow up if need be. If you have an internet connection (even an unreliable one), you can use the internet to submit this report. Medic Mobile will do so automatically each month, retrying each hour until the report sends successfully. If you do not have an internet connection, please consider submitting your report via SMS. This is a once per month international SMS that goes directly to Medic Mobile. This data can also help Medic Mobile can also recommend best practices and areas of improvement.


17. You’re all finished!

Once you have completed the Configuration Wizard, click on the Finish button. Congratulations! You are finished with setup. Feel free to select a tour so that you can learn more about how to use Medic Mobile. The tours and the configura-tion wizard are always available if you click the menu icon at the top right of Medic Mobile. After you view the product tours, check to make sure that your modem is well connected by sending yourself a test message from the Messages. En-joy!
