Step 1 - Connect DC power

Two pairs of ring terminals are provided:

Note: The BoatConnect hub has no on/off switch and will remain powered whilst connected to your battery. It will draw a very small current (typically 41 mA for a 12V battery). If your boat’s battery runs flat, it will continue to monitor your boat for approximately 30 days using an internal battery if the boat remains moored.

Connect your BoatConnect hub to your main (typically engine) 12V or 24V battery that you wish to monitor, which will need remain on at all times to provide the hub with constant power.

Installation

BoatConnect | Installation Guide3

1. Choose the appropriate terminal ring set above that fits your battery or terminal block and attach them to the red and black leads on your hub. If the connectors do not fit your battery or its terminal block, you may need to find alternate sized ones.

2. Insert the leads from the BoatConnect hub into the ring terminal and crimp them to create a strong connection between the lead and terminal. Connect the hub to your battery in the following way:

A. The black lead to the negative (-) terminal of your battery.

B. The red lead to the positive (+) terminal of your battery

Once the BoatConnect hub has been connected to your battery, two lights on the hub will begin to flash slowly.

Page 5: INSTALLATION GUIDE - West Marine€¦ · Simrad smart boat experience. This short guide will walk you through the installation of Simrad BoatConnect. Once you’re up and running

Step 1 - Connect DC power Step 2 - Find the best spot for your BoatConnect hub

3 Strong location7 Weak location

The hub needs to be:

• The hub needs to be located in a dry area with strong cellular and GPS signals using a wall mounted bracket so that it is horizontal.

• The signal can normally penetrate through a fibreglass deck but less through metal or insulation.

The hub has two lights as shown - a green one for GPS signal and amber for cellular signal.

When the hub is first connected to your battery, both lights on the top corner of the hub should flash slowly (around once per second).

Shortly after, if there is adequate signal coverage, the amber light (cellular signal) should start to flash quickly (around twice per second) and the green light (GPS signal) slowly.

After a few minutes, if both the amber and green lights are both flashing quickly, the location of your hub has adequate signal strength and you are ready to mount it. Proceed to step 3.

Note: If either the green or amber lights are flashing slowly, you will need to move the hub to a new location where the hub has a better cellular and/or GPS signal until both lights flash quickly.

Step 3 - Mount your BoatConnect hub

Installation

Mount the BoatConnect hub horizontally. This is the best orientation for the internal cellular and GPS antennas.

Mounting vertically will result in poor GPS reception and poor vessel tracking performance.

Option A - Mount BoatConnect with adhesive Dual Lock™ (no drilling required)

1. Clean both the wall and the mounting bracket using the alcohol wipes provided and allow to dry properly.

2. Stick the 3M Dual Lock strips of the fastener same type to the vertical surface / wall.

and stick the other fastener type to the bracket.

3. Attach the bracket and the hub to the wall by joining the two types of 3M Dual Lock fasteners together.

Option B - Mount BoatConnect with screws requires drilling

1. Drill pilot holes in the vertical surface or wall and then attach the bracket using the two stainless steel cross-head screws provided, ensuring they are placed diagonally apart in the bracket’s holes for maximum stability.

1. Connect the BoatConnect hub to the bracket using the two 3/8” Philips truss head screws provided and mount the bracket with the BoatConnect hub attached horizontally to a vertical surface or wall so that the top label of the hub is facing upwards.
