A. Over Dirt, Sand or Clay1. Begin preparing the surface by digging 2-3” below the level of the finished floor. 2. Fill prepared area with 3/4” minus crushed gravel, decomposed granite or limestone. (4 inches of 3/4” crushed

gravel equals approximately 3 inches of compacted gravel). For areas with very poor drainage, we recommend a layer of Geotextile fabric laid between the sub-floor and gravel.

3. Tamp gravel down to 2-3” thickness with a vibrating plate-style compactor (or equivalent), so that the gravel is completely level and is 3/4” below the desired finished floor elevation.

4. Wet down the gravel with a hand-held sprinkler. Apply a light dusting of cement, sprinkle again, and allow to dry before proceeding to mat installation.

B. Concrete or AsphaltNew concrete or asphalt must be allowed to cure thoroughly (45-60 days) prior to installation. If sealants are used, do not use one with a petroleum base. All cracks or flaws should be filled in or repaired prior to covering with rubber products. Use patching materials as appropriate. Surface should be level, thoroughly cleaned and allowed to dry completely.

C. Wood Base Wood surfaces should be completely cleaned of dirt, dust, grease or other foreign matter and be completely dry prior to installation. Nails or other protrusions should be pounded down or removed, holes repaired, and surface variances repaired. If sealants are used, do not use one with a petroleum base.

SURFACE PREPARATION

RB offers SikaFlex Sealant/Adhesive for creating the performance of a one-piece floor. It acts as a bonding agent that will waterproof flooring seams, and will be as flexible as the rubber it bonds.

SikaFlex is available in a 10 oz gun-grade form. To bond the rubber together there must be a 1⁄4” gap between seams for adhesive to adequately penetrate adjacent pieces. To seal seams for waterproofing, sealant should be applied post-installation and applied thinly only to the seams. Either application must be allowed to cure for 48 hours prior to use.

To assure a strong bond, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the edges of the mats by steam cleaning with a mild dish detergent or wiping with a denatured alcohol. Allow the mats to completely dry prior to applying sealant.

OPTIONAL SEAM SEALING

Tips on cutting rubber mats follows. This procedure works best when using the recommended RB Knife, but will also work with a non-retractable utility knife. When using a utility knife, be sure to keep the blades sharp to aid in the cut, and help reduce the possibility of injury due to dull blades.

1. Mark the mats you need to cut with chalk or a chalk line.2. Put your straight edge on the corresponding marks you

have placed on the mats.3. Holding the metal straight edge firmly in place, score the

mats two or three times** 4. Grab the mat close to the score line, lift and bend the mat toward you. The score line will “break open”.5. Make several more passes with the knife, working down the established cut, until the cut is complete.

**This process may be made easier by cutting the mat on a raised surface such as the 2x4 wood block used during installation. Gravity will depress the cut edge down and away from the cut, and will be less likely to catch the knife blade.

a) Prepare the surface using one of the three methods listed to the left.

b) Measure each stall carefully. It is recommended to measure three widths and three lengths to determine constructional consistancy. Compare these measurements with the sample diagrams below to determine the best configuration for the stall. It is suggested to not have seams at the door of the stall.

b) It is suggested to begin with a center mat, as edge mats tend to require more cutting. Determine the correct placement of the mat by measuring from the stall walls, and snap chalk lines on the perimeter of the area the mat is to occupy. Place the first mat within the chalk lines. (see Moving Mats). Maneuver the mat to align within the two chalk lines and the stall wall by tapping with a mallet and wood block.

c) Place the next mat. Butting one mat up to the next, adjacent to or end-to-end, will help ensure tight joints without gapping. If gapping or movement does occur during installation, use the wood block and mallet to nudge the mat back into place. Avoid walking on the mats until installation is complete to reduce movement.

d) If a mat requires cutting, use a straight edge and non-retractable utility knife to trim the excess. (see cutting tips). It is usually easier to cut the mats outside of the stall than maneuver cutting materials within the work area. Measure twice before cutting to ensure accuracy. If multiple cuts are needed of the same type of area (i.e. support beams), a pattern made of cardboard is sometimes helpful.

The surface preparation steps recommended will provide a stable surface under the mats. Some surfaces will require re-leveling after a few weeks of use. This is usually limited to heavy use areas and needs to be done depending on the sub-surface and traffic. If low spots are noticed under the mats or certain mats have edges pushing up from material moving underneath, time should be taken to re-level those areas. A few minutes spent ensuring a level surface will keep the stall mats in great shape for years to come. Properly installed, RB Tenderfoot™ Stall Mats will provide many years of increased animal comfort, reduced bedding costs, and labor savings.

SAMPLE MAT PLACEMENT DIAGRAMS

When moving mats, two people are recommended due to the bulky, heavy nature of rubber mats. Beginning at a 4’ side, roll the mat into a tube, and have a person on either side of the tube hold the roll together. Lift and move. Once in the stall, place the outside end at the beginning of the area the mat is to lay, and unroll the mat.
