    1. Introduction

    The following manual is intended to help you with the installation of the

    Linux operating system openSUSE Leap 15.1 onto your workstation.

    The distribution openSUSE Leap is part of the Linux OS family.

    You can download the current version of this distribution at no charge on

    https://www.opensuse.org/ or from our Customer Section on

    https://www.meyton.info/en/download/customer-login/index.html.

    The Meyton ShootMaster II Software runs solely on openSUSE Leap.

    Please read this manual carefully and follow the instructions step by step.

    Keep the default settings, if not stated otherwise.

    1.1. System requirements

    Processor

    64bit DualCore processor with at least 2GHz

    Memory

    At least 2GB

    Hard drive space

    At least 100GB

    Graphics card

    A resolution of at least 1280 x 800px

    Network card

    At least 100Mbit

    External interface

    CD / DVD or USB…

    1.2. Additional requirements

    Preparations

    • You downloaded the operating system as .iso file.

    • With the .iso file you created a bootable device (CD, DVD, USB stick…)

    (see also: 2. Preparing a bootable device).

    PC or Laptop

    • You own a PC or Laptop that you want to use as a workstation.

    • The PC or Laptop meets the systems requirements.

    • No important files are stored on the PC or Laptop.

    • All connected screens are switched on.

    During the process of this installation all files will be deleted from

    the PCs or Laptops hard drive. Make sure that important data is

    saved elsewhere before starting the installation.

    2. Preparing a bootable device

    2.1. Burning a bootable CD / DVD on Windows a) Download the required .iso file. You can find the file on our website

    https://www.meyton.info/en/download/customer-

    login/shootmaster/index.html (Customer Login).

    b) Right-click the .iso file and select Burn disc image.

    c) The Windows Disc Image Burner opens. Select your Disc burner.

    d) Insert a recordable media (CD or DVD).

    e) Click on .

    2.2. Burning a bootable CD / DVD on Linux a) Download the required .iso file. You can find the file on our website

    https://www.meyton.info/en/download/customer-

    login/shootmaster/index.html (Customer Login).

    b) Open K3b.

    c) Go to Tools → Burn image…

    d) Select the .iso file under Image to Burn.

    e) Insert a recordable media (CD or DVD).

    f) Click on .

    2.3. Preparing a bootable USB stick a) Open your browser and go to https://www.balena.io/etcher/.

    b) Select your operating system and download and install the latest

    version of Etcher.

    c) Insert a USB stick. A minimum of 8GB of free space is needed.

    d) Open Etcher.

    e) Select the image and drive (USB stick).

    f) Click on .

    3. Preparing the installation

    a) Disconnect the workstation from every network connection.

    b) Insert the bootable medium with openSUSE Leap 15.1 and restart the

    workstation.

    c) Configure your workstation, so that it will start from the bootable

    media. To change the boot order, start the boot menu by pressing the

    appropriate key during the boot process. Usually the key is one of the

    following: [F7], [F8], [F10], [F11] or [F12].

    4. Installing the operating system

    4.1. Starting the installation a) Wait until the openSUSE Leap 15.1 menu appears.

    b) To set the system to your language, press [F2]. Use the arrow keys to

    navigate. Select the desired language from the list and press [Enter].

    c) Navigate to Installation by using the arrow keys, then press [Enter].

    4.2. Language, Keyboard and License Agreement a) Select a language.

    b) Select a keyboard layout.

    c) Click on .

    4.3. Network Settings a) Check whether the wired network card is displayed in the overview.

    Current PCs or Laptops usually also have a WLAN network card. You

    can recognize the wired network card by the fact that your device

    name begins with eth0 or contains the term Ethernet.

    b) Click on .

    If the option Network Settings does not appear, check if all network

    connections are disconnected from your workstation. Restart the PC

    or Laptop if necessary.

    4.4. System Role a) Choose Desktop with KDE Plasma.

    b) Click on .

    4.5.1. Select Hard Disk(s) The option Select Hard Disk(s) might not occur, when your hard drive has

    not been partitioned. If this is the case, skip this option and continue with

    the installation.

    a) Select for your existing Linux partition Delete if not needed, for other

    partitions Delete if not needed.

    b) Click on .

    4.5.2. Partitioning Scheme You don’t have to adjust anything within the option Partitioning Scheme.

    a) Click on .

    4.5.3. Filesystem Options a) Under File System Type, select the entry Ext4.

    b) If a check is set for Propose Separate Home Partition, remove it.

    c) Click on .

    The option Suggested Partitioning reappears.

    a) Click on .

    4.6. Clock and Time Zone Set the desired region and time zone.

    a) Click on .

    4.7. Local User a) Select Skip User Creation.

    b) Click on .

    4.8. Authentication for “root” a) Under Password for root User enter the password mc4hct.

    Make sure caps lock mode is deactivated when entering the password.

    b) Enter the password again under Confirm Password.

    c) Click on .

    A message will appear to remind you that the password is too short.

    d) Click on .

    4.9. Installation Settings a) Click on .

    You now have to confirm the Installation.

    b) On this confirmation click on .

    4.10. Performing Installation The installation of openSUSE Leap 15.1 is now being performed. This

    process can take up to 60 minutes, depending on your PC or Laptop.

    After successful installation, you will be asked to restart the system.

    a) Remove the bootable medium before the restart of the system, as

    soon as the restart notification appears.

    b) Click on or wait until the counter has counted down.

    5. Troubleshooting

    Symptoms

    • The installation does not start.

    • The Computer doesn’t start after the installation.

    Is the boot order correct?

    Background: the boot order determines, in which order hard drive,

    CD/DVD drive, USB stick etc. are recognized on start up.

    On older PCs or Laptops the boot options are accessible via BIOS menu.

    The BIOS is the main program of your PC or Laptop processor.

    NO: The boot order is not correct.

    ➔ Change the boot order in BIOS. Place the media selected for the

    installation first.

    You can often change the boot order during the boot process. To do this,

    press the appropriate key during the boot process.

    Often used keys: [F7], [F8], [F10], [F11], [F12].

    If necessary, please refer to the manufacturers documentation.

    YES: The boot order is correct.

    ➔ Proceed with troubleshooting.

    Is the installation file damaged?

    YES: When starting the installation, you receive nan error message with

    the keywords MD5 or Checksum. The installation file is corrupted in this

    case.

    ➔ Download the installation file again. Start the installation with the new

    installation file.

    NO: The installation also aborts with the new installation file.

    ➔ Proceed with troubleshooting.

    Are UEFI options enabled in the BIOS?

    Background: UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) can prevent the

    installation of Linux systems.

    YES: UEFI options are enabled.

    ➔ Disable the UEFI options. Set the options to CSM or Legacy instead, or

    disable them completely. Refer to the manufacturer’s documentation if

    necessary.

    NO: UEFI options are disabled.

    ➔ Proceed with troubleshooting.

    Are security settings enabled in the BIOS?

    Security settings are called e.g. Secure Boot.

    YES: Security settings are enabled.

    ➔ Disable the security settings. Please refer to the manufacturer’s

    documentation if necessary.

    NO: Security settings are deactivated or set correctly.

    ➔ Contact the Meyton support.

    6. Contacting the Meyton Support

    Before you contact the Meyton support

    • Check all steps in the troubleshooting section.

    • In case of measurement errors / unregistered shots please write down

    the serial number of the measuring frame concerned. You can find the

    serial number on a sticker next to the connection of the measuring

    frame.

    • For software questions and problems, write down the software

    versions of the workstation, the measuring frame and on the control

    PC.

    • Write down the brand, model name and version of all affected devices

    from other manufacturers (printers, computers, beamers, monitors,

    network devices, etc.).

    • Formulate an exact error description.

    • Have your customer number ready. You will find your customer

    number in all Meyton delivery documents.
