LUBRICATION

• Every Tuthill blower is factory tested, oil drained, and shipped dry. The oil reservoir must be filled to the proper level before operation.

• Each T650 and T950H is supplied with sufficient Tuthill PneuLube™ ISO 32 synthetic oil.• Before filling the blower, refer to Figure 1. The lubrication capacities shown are for reference

only and are based on filling from dry condition. A sight glass should be used to determine oil level.

• Always follow the Filling Procedure outlined below. • Never mix oil types or grades in your Tuthill Truck Blower. This could cause gear and bearing

failure.

FILLING PROCEDURE1. Remove fill plugs.2. SLOWLY pour oil through fill until oil appears up to the center of the oil sight glass. 3. Verify oil level is at proper level in sight glasses. 4. Replace fill plugs.

CAUTION: Check sight glass to ensure that oil levels are correct before starting.

WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TO CHANGE OIL WHILE THE BLOWER IS IN OPERATION. Oil level must be checked while the blower is not running and on a level surface.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

A newly installed blower should be checked frequently during the first month of operation, especially lubrication. Check oil level and add oil as needed. Complete oil changes are recommended every 500 operating hours, or more frequently depending on the type of oil and oil operating temperatures. The following is recommended as a minimum maintenance program. An oil analysis program is recommended.

DAILY WEEKLY MONTHLY SEMI-ANNUALLY1. Check and maintain

oil level, and add oil as necessary.

2. Check air filter restriction indicator

1. Clean air filter. Clogged air filters can seriously affect the efficiency of the blower and cause overheating and oil usage.

2. Check relief valve to assure it is operating properly.

1. Inspect the entire system for leaks.

2. Inspect condition of oil and change if necessary.

1. Inspect the drive line bearings.

2. Change oil even if 500 operating hours has not been reached.

KIT COMPONENTSPRESSURE RELIEF VALVE• The relief valve must be sized for the correct air flow and pressure rating. Install the valve as close to the blower as possible and

before the check valve.• Ensure that pipe sealant is used on the threads to seal against air leakage.

AIR FILTER• The filter should be selected to suit the air flow requirement of the application.• Always fit an air filter restriction indicator set at 22” H2O (55 mBar).

CAUTION: An undersized air filter will cause the blower to operate at higher temperatures. This can cause blower to overheat, causing damage.

CHECK VALVE• Minimum restriction for application and mounted downstream of the relief valve.• The check valve should be sized for maximum air flow (CFM).

SUCTION & DISCHARGE PIPING• All piping should be free and clear of any welding slag or foreign material.• The suction piping requirements is a minimum of 4’’ (100 mm) diameter for proper flow to the blower.• The discharge piping is recommended to be 3” (80 mm) diameter.

CAUTION: Do not use a rubber elbow in the suction line during vacuum operation. The elbow will fail causing the blower to overheat. This will cause damage to the blower.

MUFFLERS & DISCHARGE FILTRATION• Minimum restriction for application• Mount downstream of relief valve.

CAUTION: For food-grade applications, always install a properly sized food-grade discharge filter downstream of the muffler (between muffler and trailer).

VACUUM VALVE • A vacuum valve and filter must be installed to properly protect

the blower from overheating while vacuum loading.• Size for proper air flow and vacuum rating.• This valve should be located before the blower inlet air filter.

Normally this valve is mounted on the trailer.

PTO DRIVE SHAFT• Blower drive shaft and PTO output shaft must be parallel and

in phase. Maintain axis within one degree in vertical plane to ensure low vibration during operating conditions.

• Use a minimum of a 1300 series (SAE 1300 or DIN 100) drive shaft that has been correctly balanced at the operating RPM.

• Do not force yokes onto the blower drive shaft or the PTO output shaft.

• T650 drive shaft is 1 5/8” diameter with a 3/8” keyway and 2-9/16” inches long.

• T950H drive shaft is 40 mm diameter with a 12 mm keyway and 65 mm long.

• Refer to Figure 2 to ensure that the drive shaft is at the proper angle.

• A “U” bolt hanger (Figure 3) should be installed to prevent the drive shaft from damaging the blower or PTO if the slip yoke comes apart. The slip joint should be half compressed. This will also stop the drive shaft from dropping to the ground, and causing potential thrust damage to the blower.

Make sure shorter shoulder on each rotor is facing upward. 5.4. Place endplate (5) over rotors. 5.5. TAKE A MEASURE… Check with feeler gauge to ensure that rotors are flush with end cover. 5.6. TAKE A MEASURE… Seal shoulder must be greater than endplate bore shoulder by .005+. 5.7. TAKE A MEASURE… Measure step from end of shaft to each side of bearing sleeve and each side of bearing surface and do calculation to find mean. Shim size is to be determined for both male rotor and female rotor.

Average = (left + right)/2 Shim Size = 0.003-average

6. INSTALL SEALS, BEARINGS AND SHIMS – END PLATE 6.1. Oil rotor shafts and inner race (all components). 6.2. Load O-rings into seal carrier 6.3. Press seals (6) into place (RED) right seal male rotor: (BLUE) left seal female rotor. 6.4. TAKE A MEASURE… Seal shoulder must be less than or no greater than .001 above step in end plate. 6.5. Oil and install the roller bearings (7) flange down; it is best to install one side at a time. Start with either male or female. NOTE: It is very important that the bearings are started straight! 6.6. Install shims (8) – if required, adjust height as calculated previous. 6.7. Install dummy bearing – dummy bearing should be approximately 0.005 above endplate. 6.8. Install bearing retainer and torque bolts. 6.9. TAKE A MEASURE… measure clearances between rotor and end plate. Clearances should be between 0.0015 and 0.0020. 6.10. If clearances are out of specification, then remove retainer and dummy bearings and add or remove shims. Recheck clearances between rotor and end plate as required. Repeat until within specification. 6.11. Install ball bearings (9). First install ball bearing race to rotor, then add ball bearing components with numbers and asterisk facing up. NOTE: The ball bearings should be slightly above the endplate. 6.12. Install retainers (10) with cap screws (11) to hold in place.7. INSTALL DRIVEN GEAR 7.1 Install gear spacers (12) (13). 7.2. Prep keyway by beveling the edges to allow key to fit better in shaft 7.3. Install keys (14). Dress key with stone. DO NOT USE A STEEL HAMMER TO DRIVE KEY ONTO SHAFT!! PRESS THE KEY INTO THE SHAFT. 7.4. Install gear (15) onto shaft in press, (pre-lube shaft) insure gear is pressed flush with shoulder of shaft!!! 7.5. TAKE A MEASURE… measure rotor clearances and record. It is critical that endplate to rotor clearance is between 0.0015 and 0.0020.

Assembly Instructions are continued on page 10.
