Resisting Lateral Wind & Seismic Loads

ZIP System R Sheathing can be used in buildings designed with either prescriptive or engineered approaches.with either prescriptive or engineered approaches.

• Braced Walls are prescriptive (cook book) based on codes and require minimal calculations, if any.

• Shear Walls are designed (engineered) by design professionals for a specific application to resist loading that is calculated by

i i l iengineering analysis.

Both Braced Walls and Shear Walls serve the same purpose –safely resist wind or seismic lateral loadssafely resist wind or seismic lateral loads.

Braced Wall Application Per 2006 IRC

ZIP System R Sheathing can be directly substituted for wood structural panelssubstituted for wood structural panels (Method 3) in braced wall applications when:

• Basic wind speed is less than 110 mph or less than 100 mph in hurricane prone regions.

• Seismic Design Category is A, B, or C.

• Nailed in accordance with the R Sheathing Installation Manual.

Shear Wall Construction per 2006 IBC

ZIP System R-Sheathing can be used in the construction of wood framedin the construction of wood framed shear walls when:

• Calculations and design are completed by g p ya licensed design professional.

• Allowable shear values published in the ZIP System R Sheathing Installation Manual and ICC-ES ESR-3337 are used.

D i d i d ith 2006 IBC• Designed in accordance with 2006 IBC Section 2305.3, Design of Wood Shear Walls.

100% R Sheathing Required

The entire structure, meaning 100% of wall area, must be sheathed using R Sheathing. No intermingling of sheathingsheathed using R Sheathing. No intermingling of sheathing types is allowed with ZIP System R Sheathing.

Installation Tips: Panel Spacing

Foam layer is slightly oversized

• Foam will overhang ZIP panel on one 4 foot edge and one 8 footone 4 foot edge and one 8 foot edge by 1/16”‐1/8”

• When installed, foam is butted but ZIP panel is gapped

• Tip:  Identify reference corner and align panels in same orientation.

Installation Tips: Masonry

Coordinate brick and brick ledge dimensions to accommodate sheathing thickness. This is typical of all exterior foam systems.

Installation Tips: Strapping

Wind uplift strapping should be installed directly to framing. Do not install any strapping on top of R Sheathing.

Note: Install ZIP System R-Sheathing to framing after all metal strapping is properly installed.

Other Things to Consider When Using R Sheathing

• Intended for use as wall sheathing only.

• Not recognized to resist wind uplift forces.

• Do not use in fire-rated assemblies in lieu of required “ d t t l l ”“wood structural panel.” (Contact HEW for appropriate fire rated assemblies)

• Minimum ½" gypsum wall board must be installed• Minimum ½ gypsum wall board must be installed on the interior side of wall studs as a thermal barrier as prescribed by building code.

• Exterior decks should be constructed as freestanding structures per AF&PA DCA6, Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide, or designed by a , g ydesign professional.
