Overview:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is the free, easy-to use, lightweight

version of SQL Version 2005. Integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server

Express makes it easy to develop data-driven applications that are rich in capability, offer

enhanced storage security, and are fast to deploy. SQL Server Express is free to

redistribute and can be seamlessly upgraded to more sophisticated versions of SQL

Server.

Download the following from the Microsoft homepage and save in C:\ Program Files.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (53.8 MB)

SQL Server Management Studio Express (38.5 MB)

IMPORTANT:

The SQL Server 2005 Express will NOT install without having the .NET v2.0 installed in

your pc. Make sure you installed the .NET v2.0 prior proceeding to SQL Server 2005

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express

1. Install first the Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Tools by going to the saved

directory of downloaded installation files. Double-click the SQLEXPR.EXE.

2. Then wait until the extraction of files has completed.

3. Click the checkbox to accept the End User License Agreement then click Next.

4. Click Install. Then the SQL Pre-requisite components w ill be installed.

5. Once the required components are installed, click Next.

6. Then the Microsoft Server Installation W izard appears. Click Next to continue.

7. Wait until the System Configuration Checking gets completed. Then click Next

to continue.

8. Click Browse then map the directory for your SQL Express to be installed in

C:\ Programs. Then notice that the Client Components is marked X.

9. Click on the X mark next to Client Components then selectEntire feature w ill

be installed on local hard d rive. Then the X mark will disappear in theConnectivity Components and Software Development Kit. Click Next to proceed.

10. Enter the Name and Company for Registration Information then click Next to

proceed.

11. Then the Authentication Mode page p roceeds. Select Mixed Mode (SQL andWindow s Authentication), though it is possible to choose ONLY W indow s, a lot of

web hosts do NOT support it. Therefore it is a MUST to choose both. Then supplya STRONG password (alphanumeric characters) on both box, take note of this

password. Click Next to proceed.

12. For the Error and Usage Report Settings page, UNCHECK the two (2) boxes

so it would not send any Error and Feature Usage Report to Microsoft or yourcorporate error reporting server. Click Next to proceed.

13. Click Install to proceed.

14. Then click Next when the configuration has been completed.

15. Then setup has completed. Click Finish.

16. Check if its successfully installed by going to Start>All Programs>Microsoft

SQL Server 2005 and the Configuration Tools appears containing the three (3)components: SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Error and Usage

Reporting and SQL Surface Area Configuration.

17. We just finished installing the SQL Server Configuration Tools. Lets go backto the directory where w e saved the 2 downloaded files. Then double click this

time the SQL Server2005_SSMSEE.msi to install SQL Server Management Studio

Express 2005 in order to complete the installation.

18. Then the Installation Wizard opens up. Click Next to proceed.

19. Click the op tion I Accept the terms in the License Agreement then click Next.

20. Then enter your Name and Company for the Registration Information to get

completed. Click Next to proceed.

21. Then check the installation path if its correct (by default it must be inC:\ Program Files\ Microsoft SQL Server, where the SQL Configuration Tools w as

previously installed). Click Next to proceed.

22. When done, click Install to begin the installation.

23. Wait for the installation to comple te.

24. Click Finish when its done. Congratulations! The installation ofSQL Server

Express 2005 is now complete!

25. Again, check if its successfully installed in your pc by going toStart>Programs>Microsoft SQL Server, then the SQL Server Management Studio

Express should appear.
