Installing the E3D Hotend in a Makibox.
NOTE:- The images below were taken using an unassembled hot end – first assemble the hot end
according to E3d instructions found at http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/E3D-v6_Documentation
START HERE IF YOU ARE UPGRADING AN EXISTING MAKIBOX, IF YOU ARE BUILDING A SUPER
MAKIBOX GO DOWN TO THE PART AFTER THE OLD HOTEND IS REMOVED
If you have an installed Makibox hot end start by removing it
Then complete the removal of the hot end by
1. Loosen the locking nut
2. Screw off the mounting plate
3. Remove the Filament Guide retaining nut and pull the filament guide off the hot end, then remove
the metal ferule from the end of the guide, it should just pull off.
START HERE IF YOU ARE BUILDING A SUPER MAKIBOX
The Unit will then look like this.
You can then take the new hot end and assemble it, the part that attaches to the printer is the
‘Bowden’ adaptor at the end of the heat sink shown below.
Note that this is just the heat sink for our
demonstration, you should assemble the whole hot end
BEFORE fitting as described at
http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/E3D-
v6_Documentation
The two plastic plates that are included with the hot end are used to mount it to the makibox rails,
the pictures below show them from both sides.
First, slide the bottom plate onto the Bowden adaptor like this
Remember that your hot end should
be fully assembled at this point, we
are using the heat sink only for
demo.
The bottom bracket is then pushed up from underneath to clip onto the bottom set of rails as shown
above.
The top plate can then be slid along the other set of rails to trap the collar at the top of the hot end
securely.
Centre the two plates and screw together using the screws provided
Insert the filament guide and screw down the filament into the hot end, connect up the heater
element and the temperature sensor using the same connectors as the Makibox hot end, then you
are ready to go.
WIRING INSTREUCTIONS
Find the hot end connector cable
The original hot end connects to the flat connector with 6 pins, cut this off.
You will then have 3 connectors each attached to two wires.
The clear connectors attached to black and red wires are the power connectors, there are two to get
sufficient power to the heater.
Connect the power cables to the new heater element. Connect both red wires from the power
connectors to one of the blue wires from the heater and both black wires from the connectors to the
other blue wire. Ensure that the connections are good and that any bare metal is covered with
insulating tape. Plug the connectors into the board where it says HOT END.
