Step 1You'll start with a ZIP file that containsall the installation files for the client. Ithink it was originally C93D1NA.zip orsomething. I renamed it toNotes7Linux.zip so I'd know what itwas later.

Anyway, just right-click the ZIP fileand choose "Extract Here".

    Step 2This will extract 3 files: Personality.zip,readme.pdf, and setuplinux.bin.

Step 3Create a temporary folder to extractthe install files, which are all in thePersonality.zip file. I just created a"NotesInstall" folder on my Desktop.

Move the Personality.zip file inside thisfolder, right-click it, and choose"Extract Here".

Step 4The setup_wct_platform.bin file isthe actual install file we'll be running. However, it's not executable bydefault. We'll need to make itexecutable by right-clicking it andchoosing "Properties"...

Step 5...and then putting a check mark nextto the "Execute" permission forOwner, on the Permissions tab. Clickthe "Close" button after you've donethis.

Step 6We'll need to do the same thing withthe setuplinux.bin file, which wasone of the original 3 files that gotunzipped in Step 2. So again, right-click it and choose "Properties"...

Step 7...and put a check mark next to the"Execute" permission for Owner, onthe Permissions tab.

Step 8The setuplinux.bin file actuallybelongs in a subfolder of one of thefolders that came out of thePersonality.zip file. So go to the placewhere you extracted Personality.zip inStep 3 (that was NotesInstall for me)

    and navigate down to:

    /updateSite/features/com.ibm.workplace.notesinstall.linux.feature_7.0.1.0000-0900/bin/linux

    Wow! Okay, now copy the

setuplinux.bin file from the previousstep (right-click it and choose "CopyFile") and Paste it into the "linux"folder you should now have open.

    6/14

Step 9Open a Terminal window (Applications- System Tools - Terminal) and changedirectories to the place wheresetup_wct_platform.bin is.

One nice thing about Linux Terminalwindows is that they normally haveauto-complete, so you can starttyping the name of the file ordirectory you want and it will fill in therest for you.

For example, I wanted to navigatefrom my home directory to/Desktop/NotesInstall. So I typed "cdDe" and pressed the TAB key, whichchanged the line to "cd Desktop/".Then I pressed ENTER and typed "cdNo" and pressed TAB, and the linebecame "cd NotesInstall".

However you do it, once you're in theproper directory, type:"./setup_wct_platform.bin" (or"./set[TAB]" to auto-complete) to run

    the setup_wct_platform.bin file.

Don't forget the "./" at the beginningof the command -- it's important.

    Step 10

Some messages about starting Javaand running InstallShield will go by,and then hey, look at that! There's anIBM Workplace Managed Client installscreen!

    Click the "Next" button.

Step 11Agree to the license terms and click"Next" (or don't agree and you're alldone with the install, I suppose).

Step 12You will be prompted for a location toinstall the IBM Workplace ManagedClient. By default, this directory is:

    /opt/IBM/Workplace Managed Client

However, I wasn't sure if I had rightsto the /opt directory and I wasn'tplanning on sharing this installationwith anyone else, so...

    Step 13

...I changed the install directory to:

    /home/centos/IBM/WorkplaceManaged Client

Which was in my /home directory (myuser name was "centos") and I knew Ihad rights to that. It also makes iteasier to back everything up if it's inmy /home directory.

    Step 14

Now you'll be told where the client willbe installed (should be the locationfrom the previous step), and it'll alsotell you that the Lotus Notes Pluginwill be installed with it. As expected.

    Just click "Next".

    Step 21

Now it'll tell you to log out and logback in, presumably because it addedthings to your bash profile.

But don't worry, it's not a full rebootlike you're used to on Windowsmachines, just a simple log out andlog in.

Click the "Finish" button to close thedialog. DO NOT log out yet.

Step 22HA! Thought you were finished, didn'tyou? Sucker... There are still a fewmore files to install.

Aren't you glad I told you not to logout yet?

Step 23Finally done with the install.

For some reason it says "Click Finishto restart the program" here, but Idon't know what program it's going torestart. When you click "Finish" (goahead, click it) the Setup Wizarddialog closes, but nothing restarts. It'sprobably just messing with your head.

Step 24Go ahead and close all the open

windows, and delete all the install fileand folders you had laying aroundjunking up the place.

You will also see a nifty new "IBMLotus Notes" icon on your Desktop.

    NOW you can log out.

    14/14

Step 25After you've logged back in, double-click the "IBM Lotus Notes" icon on thdesktop. You'll get the Lotus NotesClient Configuration screen.

    Configure away...!

erall, the whole install process took about 20 minutes, so not too bad. And a lot of what you'reing is waiting on files to unzip or copy or configure themselves. Not a lot of options at all, butere are a few tricks.

s not as easy as an RPM or DEB packaged app, but it's a lot better than building from source.t remember to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
