Illd like to, start by sayiing that Arowanas are one of the hardiest types offish you can
rear at home ..Many Arowana lovers and professional aquarium owners will also agree
that the Arowana iisone of the tOUlghest fisheseround to,have. The main reason for the
wlidespread worry that Arowanas are sensitivefisnes that die easier ismore commonly
due to, the premium price tags that Aro,wanas comewith. The fear stems from the fact
that iifthe Arowana dies~allong with iit ,goes the:ir hard earned money.
The Asian Arowana has long been a soughtaUer species of fish. linCh inese cultures"
tiheArowana have been longl prized fbr iitsmajestiic appearance and rich, royal colors ..
Chinese Feng Shuii masters also believe that: having an Arowana in the house can
bring about: prosperity The Asian Arowana in particular was caught by a large number
of people who wanted one as well; This caused rapid dediine iin its numbers until
CIITIIIESstepped 'in to pass down regu'lat;ions on commercial activities involved with
trading of the Asiian Arowana,

A~lthoughthis is absoh.de~yoptiionat iitis nice to have a
Ilfdone riight, a background color wjilllladd el:eg1anceo your lank
co~loro, fyour Arowana ..Here are some tips to hel~pyou decide what background color
works bestfor your Arowana,:
1) Fo,rR,edArowanas, use a pliain black backqround color forthe back and sides of
your t:ank
2) Fora youllnglgdden Arowana, use a white background. When your ,go~denArowana
becomes an adult (30clm or more)" chang,e the white baclkground into a blue back-
glround..lilhe bllue background shouilidonlly be used once your Arowana"s gdld collorhas stabilized ..
3)Always dhlangeor insertthe baclkg'roundcolerfirst betore iintroducinglyour Arowana
into the tank. Any activiity iinthe lank by you duringl the adding or chang'ing of the back-
glround colior miight cause undue stress on your Arowana,
For youlr tank, havi ng a top cover for your tank also, comes hiighliyrecommended ..
Arowanas are known to, have enough str, ength to, jump OUltof the water and atopcover helps to prevent that Weiightsare also encour.age to be used on top of the
cover if YOUIhavean adult Arowana that might even have sufficient strength to pop
open the top cover,

Filtration System
Your filtration system is arquably the most important part of your tank. Very often,
th is is what separates a successfu I Arowan a tan k ve rsus anothe r th at is not doi ng
well, Your Arowana wiH be submerged in the same water the filtration system helps
maintain and keep optimum. This is one part of an Arowana tank that you should
never try to scrim p and save on ..Getti ng a good f Itration system up and runn ing wi ~~
save you tons of headaches and hea rtaches down the line.
An Arowana tank requires both mechanical and biological filtration;
A bioloqi cal f Iter is a natural f lterinq system consisting of helpfu I bacterial co~onies
that, th rough a cycl ing process, convert poll utants in water to ha rrn~essnitrate. Nitrate
is n itroqen, therefore th is cyd ing process is a lso referred to as the nitrogen cycle, or
cyd ing a tan k.
Mechan leal aq uari um fi ltration is accornpl ished by moving water through some kind ofmaterial that acts Iike a sieve, catchi ng the 5 0 : 1 ids and removing them from the water.
ldeally, the most effective mechanical filter removes particles down to very small sizes.
lf you are able to careful ~ydesign a ,good filtration system, you wi ~~be able to combine
mechanical and biological f ltrafion Into one filtration system. There are hNO types of
filter setu p that you shou ld be looki ng at when setting up you r tan k::
1) Aquarium Wet or D ry Trickle Filter:
Th is is very si mila r to a su mp ta nk, The method involves an ad ditional tank that sits
underneath your Arowan a tank . Water from your main tank flows downwards into
yo ur fi Iter tank and the water, whi Ie passin g' throu gh the fi Iter tank, is pu mped back
into you r mai n tan k. Water usual ~yflows th rough a few layers of mech anical fi Ite rs
like wool or foam to remove particles and then goes through a series of biological
media like ceramic rings to break down nitrates. The "cleaned" water then rests in a
su mp tan k rese rvoi r where it is pum ped into the main ta nk.
2) Top Filter:
This method of filtration involves pumpi ng water to a box that sits on top of you r mai n
tan k. Uke the aq ua riu rn wet I dry trickle f lter, the water is passed through a series of
rnechan leal and then bioloqical f liters.
These fi lter systems have one of the best biological filtration because there is room to
uti~ze quite a lot of bioloqical fillitration med ia and involves activation using oxyg:en that
oxygenates the water before it goes back into your main tank.
Regard less of wh ich option you decide on, make su re you pay attention to the fol low-ing detai ls. New tanks are sensitive as you wi ~ be able to determi ne at a gIance if
they are set up properly and if the wate r cond ition is su itable for the introduction of
you r Arowana,

Water Ouality
Now that we have all the equipment you need covered and ready, there :~sonly one last
but very important th:ing to do ,-,age the water in you r tank. Aging the water :inyour tank
is crucial as it makes it suitable for ~iving. Genera~II'Yspeaking, water :is left to cycle in
the tank and age for 24 hours. But for a new tank, : i t :is h:ighily recommended to have it
cycl ing for 2-3 days. This is to make absol utely sure that the water is contirrned to be
safe for the Arowana to live in.
During the 3 day a'ging period for a new tank, keep you r fi Iter, heater and ai r pump run-'
ni ng ,all the time. After the 3 days are up, you can test the water with a cheap fish like
a neon tetra. lf they survive, then it's a good sig n that your Arowana can be safely intro-
duced into the tank. You mi'ght also want to consider buying a srnal ~bottle of beneficial
bacteria powder or ~quid, Th is helps to accelerate the biological system in you r tank.
Wh iIe yo u are waiti ng for the water in you r tank to age, make sure you rneasu re andconsta ntly track th e levels of toxic che rnicals (CIh~ori ne and ammon ia), that the tem-
perature is always between 26,-30°C; and that the pH value is hoverlng around 7.0.
lf you do not have the necessary equi pment to test these values, then throw in some
neon tetras and observe what happens to them. lf they are alive and doinq wel ~,then it
is a good indicator that your water cond ition is safe. Else, you mig;lhtwant t o . reset the
process and try aqain, Another thing to note is never put 'in any water conditioning sol u-
tion or blackwater sol ution before you introd uce the Arowana into your tank. The water
condition that the Arowana is familiar with at the aq uarium wou ld then differ greatlyfrom the water you now have in your tank. The large difference wi:ll~cause stress and
unfam iliarity to the Arowana.
lf you are intending to introduce the Arowana into a tank which has some fishes in
them aIready, do take note of these poi nts to prevent your Arowana attacking or be:ing
attacked by other fishes.
1) A transparent plastic separator can be used to separate the incom ing Arowana
and the current fishes in the tan k. Th is hel ps to keep them physical ~yseparated while
giving you the abi ~ty to observe how they respond to seei ng each other, After some
time of geUing used to each other, the tendency that they wi ~:fig ht when the sepa rater
is removed wi~I be lowered sig niticantly.
2) Remove items that Arowanas may use to mark the ir te rrito ry with. Thi s prevents
the m from be ing territorial and attacking other fishes that go near their spot
3) Const.antly monitor your tank and look out for any fighting.
Once you have your tank set up" you can now head out to purchase your Arowana.
