Chapter I. Background – CLEVER TEAM and CLEVER PROJECT

CLEVER TEAM is an artistic multifunctional unit specialized in working in highly demanding times of economic downturn. It is formed by two polish artists – Radek Hewelt and Filip Szatarski. They were born in the country that was immersed in deep recession governed by communistic regime. Already in their early years they experienced financial and politic crisis. Being exposed to difficult circumstances they developed certain skills that one could call the survival skills. In their artistic practices they follow the punk philosophy DIY – Do It Yourself. This way of making allows them to reduce the costs of production delivering at the same time original and quality “products”. The team became recognizable because of its particular methodology and working ethics.

Radek and Filip - who perfectly fit in the pathos of Polish workers (1) - are motivated,

experienced, skilled and dedicated on their mission of art creation. They offer high quality

work performance and productivity in a very competitive price. Their willingness to work

overtime, at nights and during bank holidays is very well known. The ability to work in hard

conditions and to make their hands dirty marks their incomparable standards in the

performance art market.

CLEVER TEAM provides ambitious stage shows. Its members are responsible for all elements

of performance production. They build scenography, create light design and original

costumes, compose music, perform, sing, dance, act, direct, choreograph, advertise, etc.

In their last production - “CLEVER PROJECT” - which was supported by the Culture

Department of the city of Vienna (premiere in February 2013) CLEVER TEAM focused on the

status of a stage performance in the circumstances of economic crisis.

Following the market demands and financial uncertainties that touch the pockets of potential art-goers, Clever Team proposed the audience an attractive program of 10 performances in the price of one regular evening ticket. Radek Hewelt and Filip Szatarski took the audience for an adventure proposing a contemporary dance show, opera, group therapy and many other attractions... They also came up with an additional scene in Valentine's Day promotion. Clever Team proved that the crisis might be an inspiring and positive phenomenon. An excerpt from a review at Der Standard by Helmut Ploebst: “It won’t be revealed here how the Clever Team mastered this crisis. Yet something obvious needs to be said: This piece is a both excellent and poignant satire on crisis and emotional speculation in our cultural life.” (DER STANDARD, Helmut Ploebst, Vienna 11.02.2013) More information about CLEVER TEAM and CLEVER PROJECT can be found online: http://www.cleverprojectcontact.wix.com/cleverproject

- - - - - - - - - - 1.) The members of CLEVER TEAM found a website of a British company supplying the UK market with the workers from Poland and other East-European countries. Here are some excerpts from http://www.easypoland.co.uk Why to employ Polish workers? Workers from Eastern Europe can benefit your business in many ways. • Motivated, experienced, skilled, dedicated staff • Lower staff turnover • High quality work performance and productivity • Ability and willingness to work overtime • Ability to work at nights and during bank holidays FOREIGN workers are getting their hands dirty by taking jobs the English don't want. Thousands of migrants from Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia are flocking here in search of a new life. CLEVER TEAM is delighted to fit in this standard.

__________ Chapter II. New mission of CLEVER TEAM In their new project: “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory” CLEVER TEAM will concentrate on the painful consequences of economic crisis. Considering themselves the very sensitive and attentive members of society, Radek and Filip will propose the audience a performance with the unique therapeutic properties. It will be addressed to all those who have been affected by the economic crash. This time all the members of the audience will have a chance to start the process of healing the emotional wounds caused by the burden of the crisis. Probably each of us has been struggling lately with debts, financial insecurity or overwork. It might lead to the overload of emotional structure and put our mental health out of balance. CLEVER TEAM would like to propose a clever solution for all these problems of mental nature. The offer includes emotional cleansing and purification through the almost forgotten experience of CATHARSIS. The aim is to let the audience experience the remedial properties of music. CLEVER TEAM is going to propose the multi sensual journey through the most capacious form of performing arts – the OPERA.

__________ Chapter III. Economic crisis and mental health It is well known that mental health problems are related to deprivation, poverty, inequality and other social and economic determinants of health. Economic crises are therefore times of high risk to the mental well-being of the population and to the people affected and their families. The economic crisis that started in 2007 has led to significant declines in economic activity, a rise in unemployment, depressed housing markets and an increasing number of people living in poverty. CLEVER TEAM got in the access to the number of evidences illustrating the devastating effects of poverty on mental health. The most common psychological effect of living in poverty is depression. “If you have financial difficulties, you are 2 or 4 times more likely to have major depression 18 months later.” (2)

Poverty results in long-term stress, anxiety, loss of self-esteem and of the feeling of control, loss of ambition and aspirations. There is a higher degree of smoking, drinking, obesity, poor diet, and sedentary lifestyles among the people exposed to financial turbulences. Suppression of the needs leads to the emotional closure and feelings of helplessness. Finally the economic crisis is responsible for many mental anomalies like psychoses, mood disorders, alcohol and substance misuse, personality disorders and phobias. It also doubles the risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. - - - - - - - - - - 2.) Skapinakis P. (2006), Socio-economic position and common mental disorder. Chapter IV. Catharsis as a remedy “Catharsis (from the Greek κάθαρσις katharsis meaning "purification" or "cleansing") is the purification and purgation of emotions—especially pity and fear—through art or to any extreme change in emotion that results in renewal and restoration. It is a metaphor originally used by Aristotle in the Poetics to describe the effects of tragedy on the spectator.” Aristotle used the concept of catharsis in both the medical and psychological sense. In Aristotle's "Poetics" it meant the emotional release and cleansing that spectators experience during and after watching a tragedy, which has a corrective and healing effect. Aristotle also underlined the cathartic influence of music on people. In "Politics" he said: "All experience a certain purge [catharsis] and pleasant relief... cathartic melodies give innocent joy to men".(3)

As indicated in chapter III, the economic crisis creates a fertile ground for generation and accumulation of stress and negative emotions. Those emotions and their natural expressions such as crying are in the most cases suppressed. “Suppressed emotions interfere with thought and perception processes, with a person's ability to respond to others and to cooperate, and with the ability to tolerate strong emotions in others.” (4) Emotional distress, if not expressed, gets stored and can create pressure in the system, therefore 'venting' emotions should decrease tension and consequentially the negative psychological experience and symptoms. CLEVER TEAM says “NO” to depression, stress, anxieties, mental disorders and phobias! CLEVER TEAM won’t allow alcohol and drugs to ruin the lives of heavily experienced people! CLEVER TEAM says “NO” to the suppression of needs and emotions! CLEVER TEAM will serve the audience as a specific safety valve. “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory” will give people a chance to reconnect with suppressed affections and let them out resulting with an emotional cleansing. CLEVER TEAM wants to propose the inner relief through catharsis. Most of the art makers are satisfied with delivering one climax. CLEVER TEAM will give its audience a chance to experience the multiple “catharsis”. In the price of one evening ticket the spectators will have an opportunity for spiritual renewal. Through offering the adequate stimuli in the form of opera based performance CLEVER TEAM will help people to overcome the psychological consequences of economic downturn. CLEVER TEAM wants to give a chance to cry as much as one wants by providing the affective performance and the social conditions which favor emotional outburst – the shelter of theater. CLEVER TEAM will give a room for a unique purgation through tears! - - - - - - - - - - 3.) From a definition of “Catharsis”; source: Wikipedia.org 4.) Scheff, T.J. (2001). Chapter V. Healing through music and opera Music has been used as a restorative force already in ancient times. “Apollo is god of music and of medicine. Aesculapius was said to cure diseases of the mind by using song and music, and music therapy was used in Egyptian temples. Plato said that music affected the emotions and could influence the character of an individual. Aristotle taught that music affects the soul and described music as a force that purified the emotions. Aulus Cornelius Celsus advocated the sound of cymbals and running water for the treatment of mental disorders. Music therapy goes back to biblical times, when David played the harp to rid King Saul of a bad spirit. As early as 400 B.C., Hippocrates played music for his mental patients”. (5) More recently, in the last decades, the scientists have pointed out some of the influences

that music makes on our body. Listening to favorite tunes leads to the release of dopamine, a

neurotransmitter associated with the pleasure system of the brain – a feel-good chemical. At

the same time music decreases the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, leading to

improved affect, mood, and cognitive functioning.

Music reduces pain and depression. Case and Cleveland Clinic researchers proved that

listening to music an hour every day helps to decrease chronic pain by up to 21 percent and

depression by up to 25 percent.

Different forms of music therapy are used to help the patients with depression, mood

disorders, pathologic anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder.

CLEVER TEAM is fully aware of the healing qualities that music naturally contains of. CLEVER TEAM’s mission is to use the therapeutic powers of music to help the audience to

overcome the harmful psychological consequences of an economic crisis.

In the new project the team will work with the format of opera in which the music plays a

central role.

“Opera (English plural: operas; Italian plural: opere) is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work combining text (called a libretto) and musical score, usually in a theatrical setting”. (6)

An opera tells a story. It can come from many sources, including history, current events, magical, Bible, and fairy tales, legends, literature, poetry, and mythology. Opera can be funny, sad, scary, dramatic, mysterious, imaginary, or a combination of the above. Opera is a combination of many art forms: singing, orchestral music, acting, dancing, mime, costumes, scenic design and painting, lighting, and makeup design.

Page 8: Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory - Concept

CLEVER TEAM sees the opera as the most capacious, complex and challenging form of performing arts that combines all elements of stage “spectacle”. CLEVER TEAM is certain that only the sensually rich and overwhelming performance might lead the heavily touched by crisis spectators to cathartic experiences. And that’s why the choice of opera seems to be the most suitable. Carefully designed scenography and costumes, scrupulously composed music scores, emotional librettos, climatic stage lightning, affecting choreography and engaging dances delivered in a contemporary form shall arouse and stimulate the watchers minds. Multiplicity of dramatic stimuli in “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory” will serve one purpose – engaging the audience in therapeutic process! The public will undergo a performance with dramatic librettos accompanied by thrilling arias and musical themes. CLEVER TEAM will offer a chance to experience common human tragedies and sufferings from a safe position. The viewers will have an opportunity to feel the strong emotions of loss, grief, hatred and disgust without loosing themselves in the experience. From the comfortable chair of the theatre, the viewer of the tragedy will be able to experience pity and fear, while knowing that the misery will end. CLEVER TEAM will be pleased to share the purifying catharsis experience that consists of a transformation from pain and tension to a well-balanced, calm state of mind. - - - - - - - - - - 5.) __________

Chapter VI. Making of “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory.” Radek and Filip, the cultivators of the philosophy of DIY (Do It Yourself), are going to take the whole burden of production into their hands, from building the scenography to performing themselves in the production. In case of necessity they’ll benefit from the assistance of other DIY practitioners. One of the principles of CLEVER TEAM is to use inexpensive, easy to access and recyclable resources to produce scenography and costumes. The common materials are newspapers, cardboards, packing papers, wood, plastic tapes, magnifying glasses, aluminum sheets, etc. The building of the stage objects is not aiming to reach aesthetic perfection but rather an appealing appearance and they should serve their functional purposes. Through submitting simplicity and attractive form over the perfection and sophistication, CLEVER TEAM cultivates the recycling and hand-made aesthetics. In “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory” the team will immerse in the universe of opera. The final result won’t be an opera itself but a performance with self-composed musical arrangements and librettos influenced by operas in their wide historical and cultural range – from Baroque to contemporary, from Italian to Japanese opera. For the needs of the new project Radek and Filip invented a term called “naïve dramaturgy”. This term is to define the dramaturgical tools that are going to be used in the project. The adjective “naïve” bears a double meaning: childlike and trustful or honest. CLEVER TEAM believes that only by a very honest and childlike way of performing the real drama can be revealed and communicated. The team is deeply convinced that to achieve the healing effects of catharsis the spectator has to be charged with tragedy and drama. In order to reach the desired level of naiveness, the dramaturgical elements like music or librettos will be simplified. The members of CLEVER TEAM assume that the mutual ground for emotional exchange between performer and spectator can be established only by operating with easy-to-access performative tools. CLEVER TEAM’s big interest lays in pathos that characterizes opera. Pathos can be defined as “the quality or property of anything which touches the feelings or excites emotions and passions, especially, that which awakens tender emotions, such as pity, sorrow, and the like; contagious warmth of feeling, action, or expression; pathetic quality.” (7)

Opera, by its condensed librettos, dramatic way of performing and the usage of music and singing to express the story, appeals directly to the audience’s emotions. CLEVER TEAM on its way to create a multi cathartic performance will explore and study opera singer modus of performing. Scottish poet Robert Burns caught probably the essence of it in the words: “Opera is where a guy gets stabbed in the back, and instead of dying, he sings”. Radek and Filip are going to take singing classes and develop passion-evoking stage presence by embodying the facial expression and the particular body language of singers. As the team submits honesty and simplicity over the perfect form, the music will take an unsophisticated but stirring shape. The usage of instruments will be limited to some string instruments (like ukulele, guitar, harp) and electronic devices (like basic synthesizer, looper).

Page 10: Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory - Concept

Composed scores will have a function of supporting the emotional transfer, rather than meeting skeptical tastes of music experts. The emphasis will be put on singing. The singer Reba McEntire said once: “For me, singing sad songs often has a way of healing a situation. It gets the hurt out in the open into the light, out of the darkness”. CLEVER TEAM will offer a chance to overcome the sorrows and worries, and find the light by getting involved in the listening to the heart breaking arias, composed specially for this occasion. In order to affect the audience through thrilling plots CLEVER TEAM will use the form of librettos. “A libretto is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera, operetta, masque, oratorio, cantata, or musical.” (8) It consists usually of simplified stories filled up with action, unexpected turns and dramatic plots. Classical operas, ancient tragedies and daily life dramas are going to be the basis of the CLEVER TEAM’s self-written librettos. They will concern popular themes like hatred, cruelty, crime, punishment, revenge, jealousy, pain, suffering, death, suicide, despair, hope, giving up, helplessness, beauty, love and relief. Structurally “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory” will contain short stories arranged in musical forms – “mini-librettos”. … But when the words fail, the dance comes to play. Dance occurs frequently in opera. Apart of its purely aesthetic impact it has been used to strengthen emotional reception and support a psychological reading of the plot. “The dance can reveal everything mysterious that is hidden in music, and it has the additional merit of being human and palpable. Dancing is poetry with arms and legs.” (Charles Baudelaire) It’s estimated that 93 percent of communication happens on a nonverbal level, including most of all, the body language. Being aware of this fact CLEVER TEAM deeply believes in the power of dance as a tool to transgress the verbal articulation and to hit directly the spectator’s heart. Radek and Filip will embody and decompose the characteristic body language in opera and share the physical expression of global recession and its painful consequences. CLEVER TEAM is confident that its carefully developed clever methods will lead the spectators to the total identification with the dramatic events performed in “Instant Opera. Adult Crying Inventory“, culminating with emotional purgation. CLEVER TEAM’s recipe is to go deep inside and to take all the outside with… all the dramatic and heroic themes, all the tragedy and injustice of the world, all the victories of good over evil, all the weaknesses and strengths of people, all the tears-bringing beauty of music, all the pathos of words… and when it comes back through the performance out into the real world, it will feel familiar but it won’t be. - - - - - - - - - - 7.) Radek worked as well with the video and visual artists like Thierry de Mey (“Ma mere l'oye”) or

Katarzyna Kozyra (“Lou Salomé”).

He was one of the members of Vienna-based artistic collective Pathosbüro. The group was

researching the phenomenon of pathos in contemporary culture and art. They worked on the fields

of dance, performance, video and visual arts.

Since 1999 Radek has been creating his own works. The performances like “Zoom In”, “21 minutes”,

“Close-up”, “Tonights Tune”, “Slow Cowboy” and “12 Songs” were shown in many countries in

Europe. They were hosted by festivals like ImPulsTanz/Vienna, Dancas na Cidade/Lisbon, Festival

d’Automne/Paris, imagetanz/Vienna and Springdance/Utrecht but also by venues like Caritas

megastore in Vienna.

In February 2013 Radek had the premiere of his latest production: “CLEVER PROJECT” (made in

collaboration with Filip Szatarski). “Following the market current demands, Clever Team - Hewelt and

Szatarski - proposes the audience an attractive program of 10 performances and a bonus promotion

scene in the price of one regular evening ticket. “CLEVER PROJECT” takes a form of merchandising

simulation in the times of the crisis. Using the marketing strategies and particular advertising tools,

CLEVER TEAM shares with the audience the discounted performative package for the periods of

economic turning points.”

In March 2013 Radek presented his solo work: “Substitute show”. It was presented at imagetanz

festival in Vienna. “In his teenage years in communistic Poland Radek was confronted with economic

crisis. To realize his dream of forming a punk band he had to build his own electric guitar from tennis

rocket. After 25 years, in the times of economic downturns in Europe, the situation seems to call for

bringing back almost forgoten skills. This time not to build a guitar but to create a performance.”
