Institut Pasteur and Japan : a long lasting relationship

• In 1886, when Pasteur raised funds to create the Institute, the personnel from a company from Yokohama participated

• The first Japanese student in the microbiology course was Dr Yabe, in 1897

• In 1922, for centennial of Pasteur’s birth, Japan donated 2 magnificent vases. They now are in the crypt, where Pasteur is buried.

Institut Pasteur

The founding vision of Institut Pasteur is to improve human health and

welfare through scientific discovery.

Challenge Today: is to translate this vision into twenty first century science and

technology within a complex global framework confronted with environmental change,

emerging infectious disease and non-infectious diseases. Aim: is to is to continue to

improve human health and welfare through scientific discovery by having a better

understanding of the underlying mechanisms of environmental change on pathogens and

their reservoirs as related to their mode of transmission, persistence and adaptation to

humans. To integrate the most cutting edge technologies along with traditional natural history

studies on pathogens, as well as to better understand the mechanisms leading to cancer and

neurological diseases.

Origin of the International Institut Pasteur Network

Three years after the establishment of Institut Pasteur in Paris, Louis Pasteur decided to establish Institut Pasteur outside of metropolitan France sending his most talented young scientists to vaccinate populations against rabies and smallpox and to study infectious diseases
