Weastflows (west and east freight flows) – an INTERREG IVB North West Europe (NWE) project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) – aims to improve and enhance freight logistics across an east-west axis in the NWE region. The project brings together experts from all sectors of the freight transport industry to work towards connecting supply chains in the region with the wider freight network across the rest of Europe and Asia. Through a combination of freight mapping, innovative technology and a drive to promote sustainable logistics, Weastflows has the potential to generate a step-change in the industry. This will help deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to communities and businesses in North West Europe.

An overview

An agent for change

Project partners will explore current freight logistics practices in North West Europe, identifying challenges in and opportunities to improve freight flows and encourage more sustainable transport methods. ICT and telematics solutions will be investigated and introduced to optimise efficient supply chains and help improve collaboration within the freight industry.

Connecting with the world

Weastflows will consider how to connect the supply chains within North West Europe with the wider freight network. It aims to create a global framework for more coordinated freight distribution. This will help deliver stronger transport links that extend deeper into Southern Europe and across to Asia, particularly China.

Sharing knowledge

As a strategic initiative, Weastflows will share learning and best practice with other relevant projects and industry organisations as well as public planning and transport authorities to influence their future thinking. Knowledge will also be shared with private sector businesses to encourage innovation and sustainable economic growth.

Infrastructure

Understanding current and planned freight transport infrastructure is key to identifying future opportunities for sustainable and more efficient supply chains. We will analyse freight flows by transport mode and freight type and extend this work to define and pilot sustainable gateways.

Sustainable multi-modal logistics

Multi-modal supply chains involve the carriage of freight by more than one transport mode and can include road, rail, inland waterway and shipping. We will examine, in detail, road based supply chains and identify if a multi-modal option is a realistic and sustainable alternative.

ICT and telematics

The adoption of intelligent ICT and telematics solutions within the freight network will help drive efficiencies and sustainability. We will pilot best practice applications and create web portals for freight, track and trace facilities, route planners and a system that encourages more sustainable road haulage.

Sharing knowledge

Project findings, reports and conclusions will be made available to all interested parties including transport buyers and suppliers as well as those responsible for transport and space planning and policy. Weastflows observers will disseminate project information across the wider industry both within Europe and farther afield to Asia.

The project focuses on four key areas: infrastructure, multi-modal logistics, ICT and telematics, and knowledge sharing. Each area comprises a series of activities ranging from mapping infrastructure to identifying and testing more sustainable and efficient supply chains.
